I'm doing something like this right now so I can relive staying up late watching metal music videos on VH1 over a decade ago.
I'm also cataloging a shit ton of songs from the past 70 years or so for my library so I can make whatever kinds of specific playlists I want. For example, I want to make a playlist for the Guitar Hero 2 setlist, I have every song ready to go right there.
Here's a snippet of some of the playlists I've made.

How do I organize and access a media library like on my home network? I've been told by an equal number of people that Plex is fantastic/terrible. Can I just create some kind of shared folder on my home wifi? What's the best way to spread a decent wifi signal around my house? Can I use something open source from github to access it from my smart TV,PC and phone? What's the backup plan now that 1337x might be zucked?

        Anonymous

I'm using TinyMediaManager to find the art and information. You just need to enable file sharing on the computer with the files and either use Plex Server or Kodi.

        >Video card or CPU needs hardware decode for HVEC and VP9
        >Need Wireless AC minimum but AX if your device supports it.
        >Media server should be connected to routers ethernet

Plex is kino, but i can understand way people don't like it

        The way I organize is
        >Filebot(naming app like tinymediamanager, because plex wants a specific naming scheme to read the content into it's library) my newly downloaded file
        >Chuck it in a folder
        >Plex scans it
        >Into my plex library it goes

        > Can I just create some kind of shared folder on my home wifi?
You should, how are you watching stuff right now?

I share a folder on my server, download on my server remotely then just do all the naming and putting into right folders on my main computer that has the folder shared to, then scan with plex

        >What's the best way to spread a decent wifi signal around my house?
        Heard mesh is decent (idk)

        >Can I use something open source from github to access it from my smart TV,PC and phone?
Maybe Jellyfin does this, Plex has it but it's all the plex shit, but it's on pretty much every OS/App/system

        >What's the backup plan now that 1337x might be zucked?
        dunno.... 🙁

          >You should, how are you watching stuff right now?
ummm on a USB on my smart TV or on my PC. LG's media player sucks bc it doesn't read mkv files most of the time

          >Maybe Jellyfin does this, Plex has it but it's all the plex shit, but it's on pretty much every OS/App/system
I think that was the one that got recommended to me over Plex. Honestly I saw that Plex has a smartphone app and that seems more convenient.

          >Media server should be connected to routers ethernet

What are those check boxes on the right? video/audio file?
Do I need a separate media server or can I just host it straight from my PC? I don't really have the money for a $300 NAS. I'm sure my PC is capable and my device would support AC/AX

          [...]
After fricking around with all that I've come to realize dumping everything in a folder and just putting basic info in the title just works. Ssd are small and handy enough that I can just plug them into whatever device I want or take them with me. Works way better in practice than trying to build and maintain your own streaming service

I swapped to SSDs only after my 2 6tb WD drives shit the bed after only 1 year. Defiantly would be a good idea to organise them by type/genre

If you have 1000+ movies, throwing them in a folder isn't easier. I need to see the artwork and posters for quick picks.

How can I edit the media data of a folder/file for the purpose of organisation? e.g. date created, genre, TV/film ect

Shitty website. How hard is it to just copy rarbg interface and not create a clusterfrick one like they did ? The search engine was fricked. Good riddance. Also, "Bone" your torrents were a disgrace, 700mo 1080p with fricked up audio and without fricking subtitles for korean movies. I could strangle that moron. SHITTIEST TORRENT WEBSITE EVER.

RARBG was great because I could open the site, see if there was anything interesting in the 'box office' section, then check the latest couple of pages of the horror tab for anything more niche. Now it's a whole fricking rigmarole trying to stay up to date with new releases.

A regular user is not going to have a positive ratio on a private tracker, people at the top of those use bots to scrape and seed everything as soon as it's uploaded and then pay for multiple gigabit-speed seedboxes.

Torrents wouldn't work if that was true and most private trackers would delete your account. Literally just leave the app open with a vpn tunnel.

Most people (users, not bots) only have a chance of seeding 1:1 for newly released stuff, that or they have to leave shit seeding 24/7 for months at a time for a CHANCE at hitting 1:1, for anything else users have to wait for freeleech periods, unless the tracker has a system where users only have to seed for X amount of time regardless of ratio.

Cheapest one with the most storage you can afford, then buy a second one
No hard drive is 'reliable', they can all fail at any moment at no fault of your own
Redundancy is your only option for mitigating data loss.

diskprices dot com for price per tb. Watch out on some of the very cheap ones like MDD since they are actually refurbished sold as new or otherwise rejects being resold.

      >Torrents wouldn't work if that was true
I don't think you understand how torrents work
      >private trackers would delete your account
Most people (users, not bots) only have a chance of seeding 1:1 for newly released stuff, that or they have to leave shit seeding 24/7 for months at a time for a CHANCE at hitting 1:1, for anything else users have to wait for freeleech periods, unless the tracker has a system where users only have to seed for X amount of time regardless of ratio.

A regular user is not going to have a positive ratio on a private tracker, people at the top of those use bots to scrape and seed everything as soon as it's uploaded and then pay for multiple gigabit-speed seedboxes.

It's all about the freeleech policies of the tracker. If there's no freeleech at all then yeah, very hard to build ratio, but that of course also kills the tracker since no one can download anything without tanking their ratio. So the more communal freeleech that is thrown in the more opportunities for ratio, though seedboxes are usually going to drown out normal user's uploads.

Raid0 or just keep two seperate hdds? Just want a jellyfin server with all my 4k kino (2 x 5 tb hdds)

Two harddrives if you care about backing up. Or a smaller harddrive for the rare things. I keep torrent files on a separate ssd and for the most part I'd be able to recover everything again since the torrents generally aren't dead.

Has enough time passed that one can tell how long will an Hard disk last and how to predict if it dies?

I had a PC, prebuilt my brother got me, it had an SSD and an Hard disk, from day one the hard disk was flawed, every 20 minutes or so it would stop for a minute or so, it would mess with games and movies.

Every tool that I could find to check disk health (windos in built,Crystal disk info, can't remember the others...) told me that it was fine.

One day my friend reboots my PC and the disk simply did not work anymore.

They got programs that can analyze your S.M.A.R.T values and give a score.

There's no real metric for drive health or failure predictions. SMART is nice but basically useless, you can maybe get a feeling it is going to fail if bad sector count is rising. Most drives fail early on or after several years, so if it isn't a dud you're pretty safe. After 5 years is around when you should start considering replacing.

Ratio for fun. I use arrs and jellyfin.

          Anonymous

Unless you're going to be serving several 4K streams at once then you don't need extra speed for video playback
Assuming you're using a standard windows PC that you normally use and this isn't a dedicated server then yeah, just plain folders on separate drives is best.

Running nearly 100tb worth of drives (9 of them) for my plex server, all separate drives, no issues so far, pic related is annoying when I add a new drive tho lol

Running a server requires frick all speed, only thing you need is a half decent modern CPU (intel) that has quicksync for trancodes if needed

homie I don't even know what the frick port forwarding even is, and piracy has only gotten easier in the last 30 years. The 90's weren't shit, I was there. You couldn't download a single damn song without crashing your whole city's power grid, causing 700 local children to starve and freeze to death. Even remotely decent google-fu will get you literally anything these days, on torrents or otherwise. You are all such inbred moronic dipshits. I can't believe you "people" can even get dressed without mommy giving you an instruction manual first. Fricking losers. Fricking babies. I would frick my own ass raw before I ever even stepped within 50 miles of your lonely stench. I would beat you to death with my bare hands if I ever saw you. I know who you voted for. You will regret it, you fricking invertebrate slime. You absolute fricking cum gargling wiener receptacle. Shut your goddamn onions-clogged throat for 5 seconds and use your brain. You know what is coming. You thought the storm belonged to you. I am the fricking storm. You will be abolished along with everything your culture has cherished for the last 200 years. Your blood means nothing to me. Less than nothing. Think about what you've done. Or don't. It doesn't matter. The outcome will always be the same. Your kind are forgotten, and my kind are invited into the future. Every time. No exceptions. Enjoy your mass grave, dipshit. It's where you belong.

How is QXRs 2160p rips? Feels like a 4k bitstarved rips defeats the purpose of 4k

Yeah doesn't really make sense. If you want 4K go with remuxes. 1080p rips from QxR, Sartre or HeVK are my go-tos always.

I have been pirating since '07, but never really got deeper than just downloading and stopping it once its done

what is seeding and why does everyone freak out when you dont do it?

It's when you fap as a celebration after finishing a download, you need to shoot your seed on the monitor or it's considered bad manners.
