>Beautiful, intelligent, athletic black female
>Absolutely ridiculous powerset, she defeats Spider-Man in seconds
>Becomes an Avenger weeks after getting her powers and just about all of them like her
>Doesn't feel like a Mary Sue
What sorcery is this? She has some of the same things I hated about RiRi Williams but I find her immensely likable. Also her entire origin recap wasn't spread out over multiple issues, maybe ten pages max.

It's called "good writing."
nah
>calls herself captain marvel
>pretends she doesn't know that captain marvel existed prior
She was from New Orleans, not the East Coast. Do you think she was privy to all of that stuff? And ironically, the French speaking white dude she saved and her professor friend gave that name.
based character with flaws, not like the new age blacks we get nowadays
She looks hideous.
It was John Romita Jr. inked by his dad.
Sr. always gave his girls bimbo lips with the shadows underneath.
Much better.
The Romitas have always been based
Junior is a disgrace to his family.
Someday Marvel will show things like this again.
you look hideous
There was pretty good cheesecake in that first appearance honestly
Had she ever been there?
not being decompressed really helps you feel familiar with characters and situations inside of a single issue, or two at the outside; it gives you room for variation in their story so you see them eg on and off the clock, coping with gaining powers etc and it doesn't take months
but also in Monica's particular case she already didn't take shit from people, had a position of responsibility she earned without powers, and she nearly frickin exploded all the time due to being immensely powerful, so she's got the best portions of Iron Man, Cap and the FF backstories all at once and the moment she gets powers she goes full Power=Responsibility
she retreads without appearing to step into any one mold in particular, and she's always drawn stacked

This.
Just look at Jeremy Adams's Flash, people are loving Wally's twin or Wallace
It also helped that there wasn't a dozen other replacement characters being made around the same time
The floppy arm flaps were a mistake
It's called Claremont
Roger Stern, dumbass
Because new bad old good
I wasn't big on her being made leader of the Avengers
