for real, a big part of why the 80s 90s was better was because of less wage stagnation and mpre purchasing power

Imagine a time when you could go to the movies or watch TV and the level of subversion was minimal. Still the degeneracy was increasing but you practically had to search for it.

      I miss that time.

I would argue soul didn't die until 2008 when the recession happened and iPhones and Facebook destroyed the way people fundamentally interacted with each other. Even in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 I remember people were much friendlier and warmer with each other than now, where everyone is extremely isolated.

Yeah everyone wanted to help out after 9/11 and the government hadn't yet taken advantage of the situation to their own dastardly means.

9/11 wounded the US psyche, but the 2008 recession is what ultimately killed it. Especially the government bailing out businesses that didn't comply with standards.

Unironically miss the dial-up days. People made a point of only using the internet for a couple hours a day, and could only access it from internet cafes or home.

Now, every fricker with a smartphone accesses it 24/7.

The beginning of the end was unlimited hours of AOL. That allowed us to be online for 6-8 hours at a stretch and get into all sorts of bad things.

Yeah, and any interaction with people through any medium is a social experience. Right now, we're having a conversation. That's a social interaction between two people. This is a website where you socialize with other users, anonymously, yes, but still social.

There is a difference between networks of today which are walled gardens and algos drive what post are seen to drive longer time on the site. Where forums and older 'social' media were merit-based. You got a bump if your post was good and if was shit it was gone, bots were limited to policing no need for jannies either centralized or decentralized.

It was open dialog. It was what the internet was sold as.

Social media are Web 2.0 Internet-based applications.
User-generated content (UGC) is the lifeblood of the social media organism.
Users create service-specific profiles for the site or app that are designed and maintained by the social media organization.
Social media facilitate the development of online social networks by connecting a user's profile with those of other individuals or groups.
For example, a news website with a comment section using third parties software (like Disqus) isn't considered a social media, but a news website allowing users to submit content and hosting its own comment section and users profiles can be considered a social media.

He's right, Web 2.0 began in the 90s with Newgrounds and Livejournal. That's when websites became more interactive and emphasized user-created content. Cinemaphile is firmly a Web 2.0 site.

I listen to old Howard Stern clips from the 90s when I hike (I'm only 29 and grew up in TX so I knew nothing about him until maybe 4 years ago), is Private Parts worth the $5 on YouTube to rent? Seems like it would give me a 90s fix. Something about his old show gives me major nostalgia, the clip I was listening to today he told Fred "dude it's 1995 get a modem..." and jabbed at him because he didn't use his VCR to record Mary J Blige at the American Music Awards

My statement wasn't (just) pro-nostalgic but the fact that things have been going downhill for decades. It doesn't have to be that way. Like you can be nostalgic for a happier/better time in your life and still live in a good society/civilization.
But you can also be nostalgic for a better time in civilization/society.
