    This movie was stupidly overhyped.

It really is, people only liked it because it was Del Toro, and the message of the movie was basically "don't grow up, because if you do then you might become a fascist."
If you want to watch a better anti-Mussolini film, just watch Porco Rosso. This was just pathetic.

i didnt even pay attention but the message was that something about flaws being more important than perfection

The message was not to be a blind puppet to others, and to choose love above all else even if it means being disobedient because that's what matters in the end.

Only because Del Taco made it. If it was some literal who’s project, nobody would’ve paid attention.

      Anonyrnous

I thought it was appropriately hyped. There was beauty in seeing a guy's passion project fully realized after struggling for over a decade to get it off the ground. Anyone who appreciates stop-motion was enamored by Pinocchio's visuals, and even those who are tired of remakes and remakes respected that del Toro was making a bold new spin on the story rather than retreading the same ground.

Pinocchio definitely hasn't had much of a lasting impact, but it made sense for it to win all the Animated Feature awards during its cycle since its only real competition was a more divisive and controversial film that many refused to take seriously. Yes, I also wish TLW had won

The songs were trash. The only good one was the propaganda song that Pinocchio sang at the latter half of his performing career.

Pinocchio came out in late November/early December, the standard Awards Bait Hype time and Del Toro was the only person going "The Academy needs to stop treating animation as some shitty kids table they hate having to acknowledge" that had any clout in Hollywood.

swear i remember it be released early.

Del Toro is a homosexual because say big words but does very little to "move animation into adult stuff"

Del Toro didn’t tell his Academy buddies “hey guys, check out Mad God and Inu-Oh as well”, he only cared about shilling his own movie.

No contradiction. He only promoted his own movie before and during the Oscars. Now that he won and doesn’t have another animated movie for the next Oscars he’s shilling Spider-Verse.

The movie looked nice and had a cool atmosphere, but that was pretty much all it had going for it. It's an incredibly forgettable film otherwise which sucks as I love stop motion animation and was initially looking forward to it.

    >puppet comes alive
    >immediately starts wrecking shit, screaming, throwing tantrums
    >Gepeto doesn't like this, rightfully tells him he's a massive pain in the ass
    >Gepeto gets chastised for not recognizing the incredibly annoying puppet is a miracle that he should be grateful for
    >Setting randomly turned into fascist Italy for no reason other than inserting director's political views
    >The cricket is also annoying and painfully unfunny.
I got halfway through this movie before I got so fricking annoyed I had to turn it off. Pinocchio was just too bratty to the point that I could not believe Gepeto would keep him instead of throwing him into the fireplace.

Do puppets normally come to life where you're from?

If a puppet came to life, started acting like I was its father and then began fricking my life up and acting like an annoying, entitled brat, 'gratitude' is probably the last thing that I would feel.

I wanna see a Pinocchio movie that takes the same approach as KC Green's webcomic version: take the completely unaltered events and dialogue of the original book but putting it in a visual style that throws how psychotic it all is into stark relief.

      Anonymous

Frick, I didn't know he did a Pinocchio webcomic
Looking at it right now and I'm surprised at how accurate it is to the book and somehow still feels like KC Green was doing one of his parodies

Toro wanted to thematically tie it with Pan's Laberynth and The Devil's Backbone, both fantasy movies that take place during the Spanish Civil War.

You at least remember the epic monster battle at the start of the film, yeah? That's what made the ending just that much more disappointing.

            Anonymous

No since the monsters didn't look epic enough. I hoped for something that's more like a Monster Hunter Tri movie. Sea monsters are among my favorite tropes, especially the top-down-shot-of-something-under-the-surface shot. Whenever that one doesn't appear I'm already disappointed. I think it at least had a shot-shows-most-of-creature-is-actually-underwater-like-an-iceberg shot. But I found the monster design generally too Dreamworks but cheaper-ish.

Not a complete disaster though, it looked fine.
