It boggles the mind that people can take Keanu Reeves seriously as "le badass action hero". In the Matrix series it's only believable because he downloads martial arts and weapons skills into his brain.

      Anonymous

Keanu got into guns IRL though after the Matrix and is at a competition shooter level. He's probably one of if not the only actor that isn't being completely scripted through his gun play. He has a quick split time, he's fast on his reloads. Hell of a lot better than the usual lot who don't understand how sight alignment works or have bottomless magazines.

The sequels kind of miss the whole point of the first movie. In the first one, John Wick is this legendary assassin that even the bad guys are afraid of and just hearing his name has them shit their pants. In the sequels, now he's suddenly always the underdog, always banged up and a walking corpse from injuries and all of his colleagues are going after him to collect the bounty without a shred of fear. They completely ruined the unique premise of the first movie.

      >now he's suddenly always the underdog, always banged up and a walking corpse
Are we watching the same movies? Sure John gets banged up, but everyone who faces him ends up fricking dead. A few bruises and cuts mean nothing when the other guy is dead. Furthermore, the kind of injuries he gets would cripple a normal man. He's unstoppable.

        Anonymous

yeah but the sequels do a shit job at showing that John is actually the superior assassin and feared for his skills. He barely ends up winning, just like any other hero in a hollywood movie ends up winning after a hard fought, scrappy battle because the plot demands for him to win. The action is following the Rocky formula now, which wasn't the case in the first movie, until he got badly injured at the end.

I think that adds to the realism and is part of the reason why i think the choreographed fight scenes are so well done. There's no flashy annoying as frick cut editing. Just long shots of two men fighting to the death. It's unpolished, they trip, stumble, receive blows, miss hard hits. They actually seem fricking exhausted towards the end which is a much better alternative.
I wouldn't want him to just be a perfect killing machine that blocks every hit and nails every punch. That's just cheesy to me, idk just my opinion.

            Anonymous

i always thought these movies were meant to be parodies in a way of the action movie-type, they even have the over the top action bubbles and melodramatic subtitles and music cues. the thing that really makes it for me is the combination of this and the absurd moments like killing fatty and it takes several shots to the head or them having a "silenced pistol" fight in a crowded NYC metro station. it's got a very surreal, bizarre mixture of fantastical and real life brutality in both the literal on screen elements and in the story and characters. it's like a larger than life retelling or a comic book, excluding the sentiment of lesser, base capeshit of course

my one wish is that they went practical with the blood and gore. why get keanu out on a fricking range with live ammunition popping adderal to get his target acquisition and fire speed times improved so he can make a better show of the gunplay just to have cheap digital blood? it's already a strange mixture of older action movies and new age design, why would they not also ape the gritty practical effects?

              Anonymous

I wouldn't say they are parodies, but they are definitely self aware and don't take themselves too seriously. I think that's a major factor in its charm, it's not a super serious mission impossible or James Bond movie. It has a lot of humorous elements sprinkled throughout that you touched on. The over the top subtitles, the cheesy dialogue and characters.

I agree I think it would be a lot better with practical effects and it is disappointing but understandable they went with CGI.
My main takeaways from the movies is that they're just fun. They aren't boring ( although the pacing slows a bit at different points throughout) The choreography is probably my favorite, that coupled with the nice steady long shots which are rare in action movies nowadays.

      Anonymous

he's been working his way up, but yes a bit more fear from his targets would be nice, you can say they are putting on a front, and they are but you could see it a bit more

Even the first film had people willing to try him though. A giant bounty on a guy who just came out of retirement who won't get a break from fighting is worth an attempt if you think you have great skills or a good angle. They still portray him as an unstoppable killing force so idk what more you'd want.

I think John Wick may be to high IQ for you, stick to marvel slop. The characters are bound by the rules, John broke the rules, so he was hunted. Even John Wick, a great assassin is still just a pawn to the high table. Not sure how you missed this world building.

they usually alternate hand-to-hand combat with gunfight, which prevents them from using old-school fake blood capsules that could burst prematurely.
old movies usually cut to show a close-up of the capsule exploding to avoid this, but John Wick is all about continuous shots filmed from the distance.

The second one is a decent sequel, more of the same but in different locations. If you liked the original, you'll probably dig this too, cliffhanger and all. The third one is where shit gets too crazy, both in terms of plot and fully shifting things into a franchise. Good place to drop out.

Its mindless action fun where the characters in-story arent breaking the 4th wall, quipping every 20 seconds or pushing THE MESSAGE to the viewer.

In the 80s/90s John wick would be seen as a mediocre film in a sea of action super blockbusters. These days people are so starved for them that they'll take anything they can get.

Also theres something to be said about the character John wick essentially just being an american James bond, the unkillable man a Master of all trades and a dangerous killer. Typical male fantasy shit.
