the box office isn't what the studio makes, try half that after the theatres get their cut, so it made Disney 80 million, and cost 300+ million to make, and that's without advertising costs, I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up costing Disney a cool half billion.

The first Captain Marvel movie had made $164 million worldwide by its 4th day out.

It’s more that no one watched the shows and now they’re tying movies too them. A mistake they made with the intro of the second avengers movie being a “season finale” or whatever to agents of shield, which also no one watched. So in the context of the pre-disney movies, hydra going from being a covert/subversive espionage network within other power structures to having pewpew laser castles was a massive misstep. Now they’ve released two more movies (strange 2, this) that assume you watched two of the streaming shows. Even gotg3 suffered from being tied to endgame, not to mention “the Christmas special.” A mistake they’re now scrambling to correct with black captain america

Which is all to say, no, “franchise fatigues” is not a real concept. People don’t get tired of good movies.

Long-term planning is both a strength and weakness of interconnected universes. Having a plan and sticking to it means you don't overcorrect when Thor 2 is received tepidly like the way Warner Brothers did with, well...everything.

But the flip side of that is you better be damn sure your plan is the correct one because you're committed to it and if it goes off the rails the whole train goes with it. You might have to make black panther 2 even if there is no black panther because if you don't it compromises all you other plans. You might have to make a big-budget blockbuster starring a character whose tv show bombed because by the time you realized it was a bomb you were already committed to a release date. And you can't just hard pivot away in a month or two like they do in the comics when shit goes wrong because development cycles take years. Which is why betting it all on such shaky premises was suicidal. It was like going all-in with pocket 5's.

Puffery is fully expected in the world of advertisement. Remember how a random coffee shop will claim they have the best coffee in the world? It is obviously not true, but it is legal because the meaning of "best" is unquantifiable by any objective metric. Similarly, "the number one movie in the world" could mean virtually anything. The viewer is left to assume what it means, so as a result marketing is built around outlandish claims.
