To be fair I would expect the adaption of a book that is 2/3 about the cultural revolution and its aftermath to be cast primarily with chinks. Did they just cut all of that out?

They cut all of it out. My sister was confused about why Ye doomed humanity because they just kind of skim over her trauma and the hell of living in China during that period, and none of the rest of the characters work because they're upper class multi-culty brits.

      Anonymous

Because they change tons of shit from the books. All those gay characters at the start dont exist, and its a single dude thats swept up in all of this and trying to solve it. The book is far better in pacing and structure and doesnt try with the over the top gay shit like the "universe winking" and the over the top suicides with countdowns written in blood.

When its an asian guy it gets turned into a white (? Brown eyes) woman, asian woman, a black guy and 2 white cucks. They had zero faith a single asian would sell their product and threw the kitchen sink at it.

This is definitely a valid criticism. The characters aren't really characters at all in this series, more a way of introducing plot points and concepts. The series as a whole is a collection of concepts.
We're used to "character driven" perspective in western literature, where characters plays the main part of the story istead of the "event driven" style you see often in Chinese literatures. It ultimately comes down to the difference in philosophy where individuals are merely a part of the wave of history/events/systems instead of the driving force of it.
The main character of the first book was not brought up again other than his contribution to nanomaterials that ended up being crucial to humanity's development of space elevators. But that's all he was realy, just a blip in history.

only seen the first episode, but it's so different it's not even worth pointing out hte differences. Most of the characters are chinese in the book, and the main scientists are like men in their 50s with families and not single independent women. Aside from that the book is mostly interested with the concepts and science (to the detriment of hte characters I'll add, but the consepts are really good) and the series so far seems mostly interested with giving mysteries to the bizarro'd made up characters to have drama. The chinese parts set in the past seem to be the only accurate thing from what I can see.

The key important parts of the plot (at least 3 episodes in) are pulled right from the books. Everything else, including a lot of characters, names, places, events, etc, are completely new.
That said the books aren't exactly full of likable or fleshed out characters, and so far all the changes have been anywhere from whatever-its-fine to great.

      Anonymous

I read the first book and the characters are extremely one-dimensional, and are really just vessels for the plot. It reads more like an Isaac Asimov story where it's more about the ideas than the characters.

Haven't watched the show yet but I assume it's gonna be more character-driven.

      They completely fricked it.

Book 1 has a main character who is connected to the main character of book 2 via the fact they're both pals with the chink detective, and they both have some contact with the chink traitor woman. Book 3 has a character who is loosely related to book 2's main character, but they've never really met.

In the shitflix show, all 3 of these characters are the best of friends and introduced in the first episode. One of these characters (book 3 protag) also happens to be the boyfriend of the second most major character in the second book.

The "Oxford 5", as the show puts it, are the most important and influential humans ever, each by their own right. It's a fricking joke.

Quite literally everything but Da Shi and Ye Wenjia is different. And Da Shi is wau different in the book (way better).
It also takes its time to explain things and why they are happening instead of jump around from 60s to now. The "countdown" wasn't personal and everyone had the same time they saw, but it didnt just start with the visions it was way more subtle. The book >>>>>>>>this shit show.

Not sure why in the show, only on episode 3, but "Santil" is the direct translation of what they're called in the original chinese books. They're only called "Trisolarans" in the translated works that take a lot of liberties with the story.

China version is just accurate and bloated showing all the details. Also the actors are mostly bad and show barley any emotion, some scenes are The Room level. Meanwhile D&D is showing more emotional scenes in 5 minutes than in 30 china version episodes. Then everything is way faster paced ofc and you get the usual trash banter scenes, racially diverse cast and sex/kissing while the chinese showed only slightly hand touching.

The netflix red coast scenes are way better since you can actually see her anger and motivation to send the message. The other version she barley shows any emotion most of the time like she doesn't really care at all.

They already tried to make Ye sympathetic by cutting the part where she kills a dude and having her go "oh noes I feel bad now have a hint magic Black person" before she goes off to die. I thought for a second they were going to pull a bait and have her throw the cultist off the cliff, but nope, just an off-screen death.

They're absolutely going to try and redeem Xin.

They're going to make her a girlboss, the original character was too problematic. The ayys will attack before the Black person hands her the controls, Wade will be comically evil, and she'll save 500 brown people with her fleet of light speed ships.

i think they are speed running it because

1: getting renewed on netflix is never a sure thing, so shows have to run at breakneck pace now because it may get canceled after 1 season. if they only got budget for 8 episodes, they have to as much as they can in those 8

2: they probably want to attempt at least the 2nd book because everyone knows dark forest is the real meat and potatoes, so they might be trying to speed their way to it as quickly as possible and get through the preamble which most interested people have already heard before

those are my guesses as to why the show watches like cliff notes

Why call it a "3 body problem" when there are obviously 4 bodies (3 suns, 1 planet)?

Their planet isn't big enough to be gravitationally significant in that system. It's in there for the ride.

You're still trying to solve the planet's location relative to the stars.

It can't, though. That's the thing about chaotic systems. You add even a small perturbation like a planet to the equation and the predictions quickly diverge.

Trisolaris is the only planet in that solar system and it is under the gravitational influence of these three stars.
Stable era is when the orbit is relatively calm and chaotic eras... not so much.
The thing is it is not impossible to tell when it switches from one to the other.
Their technology eventually gets to a level where they can accurately predict and even survive chaotic eras but it was all useless in the end as the planet would be swallowed up by the stars.
