Yes and they make you hold the front leaning rest or do a partial push up and have you hold the position once you hit muscle fatigue to torture you more. Burpees and flutter kicks are worse imo
Burpees are the best thing ever. Wake up, stretch, do Burpees. You can do them when you can't go to the gym and you will still be in great shape.
flutter kicks get somewhat more tolerable if you get your core really toned but they always suck and it always feels like you've had the wind knocked out of you when you finish them. truly the devil's exercise.

It's not really an American thing and it's not really about not being able to kill people per se. You train constantly to be as good as possible at a very specific skillset and then you get to actually do your frickin job about 1% of the time. It's incredibly frustrating and it makes your entire life feel pointless. Combine that with the hurry and wait nature of the the military where you're often gearing up to actually do your job only to get stood down and it makes people lose their shit. I've had buddies who got out or transferred to SOF or even other branches cause they couldn't take it anymore since the Marine Corps is especially awful in this regard.
