They didn't even get it right then. They highjacked what was meant to be a simple anniversary crossover that was only meant to get rid of the multiple earths and turned it into a massive reboot event.

This implies COIE wasn't a terrible failure that required constant semi-reboots between it and New-52.

          Anonymous

This. The discerning eye may notice that EVERY FRICKING REBOOT SINCE COIE has been about trying to resolve the glaring frickups resulting directly from COIE making everything more confusing than when they started.

The truth of the matter is that you can having a neverending shared universe running in place constantly rotating through writers for decades at a time, or you can have a setting that is cohesive and makes sense. You can't have both, for the same reason that you wouldn't expect artistic consistency from a bunch of children being asked to share the same coloring book. The one thing you can count on for sure is that every one of those kids is going to scribble outside the lines, and at least some of them are going to scribble over the bits someone else already colored in.

The problem with COIE is the same problem they had with Flashpoint, they weren't willing to commit to the full reboot.

Reboot scares them. They came ultra close to it in Death Metal or whatever the frick it was called, but aborted it at the last minute, in an act of supreme cowardice that robbed that mega-event of its payoff.

But they have to reboot at some point. Just to get rid of all the trash in continuity.

Death Metal was leading to their 5G universe, which would have been disastrous.

                Anonymous

Unpopular opinion: I think the only thing truly wrong with 5G was that it skipped the sidekick generation in favor of total nobodies. If you're going to advance the timeline in DC, the natural thing to do is make all the various teen sidekicks grownups running the show, and put the OGs in quasi-retired mentor roles and go from there. But since Didio absolutely hates the 90's characters, he tried to skip over their turn and have the next wave be a bunch of literally-whos, resulting in no hype and dooming the whole project in the process.

                Anonymous

Yeah. It is crazy. 'Cause every one of DC's main cast has multiple sidekicks to pick from, and while they're not all superstars they sure as hell all got more fans than the made-up loser squad they ended up with. Just pick the most popular one for each and age them up, and you have a team with some precooked hype behind it, some history, some payoff to all the stories where they implied or directly said they would follow in their mentor's footsteps. Dick Grayson as Batman would definitely go over better than Jace fricking Fox.

      What???

      They're rebooting again?

I feel like DC is truly the reverse of Marvel in regards to rebooting. Marvel needed to reboot decades ago to fix issues like with Magneto's parentage of Quicksilver and Wanda, One More Day, and X-men in general, whilst DC literally can't stop rebooting to their own detriment.

There's no actual evidence that this is leading to a reboot, it's just speculation. My prediction is that if it's a "reboot" it won't be in any meaningful way - it will be in the same way that Death Metal was a reboot; just DC shrugging their shoulders and saying "some things are canon, maybe that thing you like is or maybe it isn't. Don't ask us to elaborate"

All the rebboots since Infinite Crisis have been incredibly half ass. They only make things more confusing without changing anything significant.

It's always the same shit, Just
          >a couple characters disappear
          >A 70s or 90s character reappears and everyone pretend they were always there
          >A couple people will get a new origin that does not line up with the last two decades, meanwhile villains and side characters introduced in those two decades are still around
          >Legion will reappear again, and people still won't give a shit
          >Half the Superman villains are written out and will be re-introduced with new origins in the next year
          >More New God history is retconned in, making them more confusing
          >Hawkman gets a new mini and origin everyone will ignore in a month
          >Something happens to the JSA and everyone will hate it
          >Earth is renumbered or retitled into something new...again

no, but nobody's been writing a legion book since Bendis left (I think, there might have been a short run at some point). LGH is kind of a continuity nightmare, and there doesn't seem to be many writers interested in the characters so basically they're just in limbo

Not since Bendis got his hands on them and brought them back on 2019. But they tend to always be on the other side of a reboot, only for it to last 5 months at the most and vanish all over again.

I'm betting we are getting Wheelchair Babs again and Connor Kent is going right back to limbo where he came from.

Beyond that Wally might be going bye bye again
Harley will be retconned to always having been an antihero and never associated with Joker at all
Definitely going to see all new updated versions of the Superman villain and supporting cast. That always happens every reboot.
JSA are back and likely to be currently existing in the modern day. Alan is now too valuable as the token gay classic hero for DC to parade around.
80s Captain Atom is likely returning.
Titans are going to be retconned right back to 14-15 for the what....5th time?

Green Lantern always ends up unscathed from these things weirdly.

Besides the ultimate stuff, the most hated theory as of now is that White Knight Universe is this new Ultimate universe as Spiderman alone started the original Ultimate run.

White Knight universe still baffles me because it literally seems like they gave one random guy carte blanche to create his own alternate DC timeline. Like do they let anybody do that? Just write fanfiction and say it's official?

It also turned into shit when Harley's idiot children appeared. I don't give a frick about those. I liked the "two harleys" concept though, explaining the radically different Dini HQ and juggalo HQ as literally different people claiming the same identity.
