Why is she such a bitch?
Everytime I rewatch the show I grow to hate her more

did they think putting an insufferable libtard in the show would balance out the plot or something?

The fact that she is her own worst enemy was kind of the point of her character. The show wasn't painting her as an admirable person and her character arc was partially about her coming to terms with her own self-destructive pretentious tendencies.

The series didn't end with her as a 'fixed' person anymore than anyone else did. They were all flawed characters but by the end I think they all realized what their flaws were and the show ended with them having the choice whether they wanted to do something about it or not.

Did you watch the show anon? That's the point.

We (the viewer) where still "supposed" to agree to her in the most part.
Most of the time what happens is:
>everyone is stupid except Diane
>but she is so flicking smart that she goes too far and fucks up
The writters DID nothice that she was a bitch by her depression arc, but during her thin stages she is supposed to be seen as a "baddas girl boss"
do you actually think the writters have more than one season planned ahead?
>We (the viewer) where still "supposed" to agree to her in the most part.
no we arent. We're supposed to like her, but we know that she and Mr Peanutbutter were not compatible and both torpedo their own happiness. By season 2 the show is positioning her as being as self destructive as Bojack, it's the whole reason they cant stay friends. Also she was never a badass girlboss trope, in fact she even works at Girl Cruush to show that she isnt one compared to the mouse girl, who is actually the badass girlboss trope.

My gripe is I can't into subtly. Every other character has flaws that are fairly obvious, and at one point or another a character will basically spell it out
Diane is miserable but I never got what was wrong with her, besides maybe depression

Diane's flaw is she thinks she deserves pain because it's all leading to something that will make her life make sense.

>mouse girl, who is actually the badass girlboss trope.
She was just supposed to be a (rich) zoomer
She did nothing worth mentioning during the show

[...]
I thought they showed her failing and getting in her own way pretty regularly. She was often the voice of reason when compared to Bojack, and she was made to be as relatable as Bojack was (even though both could be assholes) but there were plenty of times where things would actually be going pretty well for Diane but then she'd fuck it up by either going on some unnecessary crusade, or trying to make something 'smarter' than it needed to be.

I personally never saw her as the badass girl boss even in her thin stages. I saw her as the perennial fuckup who couldn't accept a good thing when she had it because she always thought she was better than she was. She couldn't hold a job down because she would either overreach or she would leave because she thought she was better only to end up miserable. She's the embodiment of someone who thinks they deserve more than they have because they believe they're smarter than they are.

By the end, Princess Carolyn was overtly calling her out on her shit when she was trying to sabotage what was clearly a successful career path writing fiction for teenagers in order to write some pseudo-intellectual memoirs nobody ever asked for.

You got a point, I probably only hate her because 99℅ of the time when an arc ends she gives some type of he-man morality speach
Thats why I get the feelings that the creators made her to be some kind of voice of reason, or a "straight man" where she acts 'rationally' in the shows world

yeah but she and Carolyne are the girlbosses, not Diane

It was a bit muddled. When she goes to that war zone, writes nothing, and comes back home because she can't take it it certainly seems like it's pointing out she was unable to meet her own ambition but it was also about how that tiger guy was a narcissist?

I don't think anyone was portrayed as particularly virtuous in Bojack. One of the reasons why it's reasonably well written is that they avoid the trappings of "good and bad". Every character is fallible and while each has their ups, they also have their downs and are most often the cause of their own misery.

There are things to like about the show but it doesn't have a nuanced view of good and bad.
This show flies head first into the trappings of good and bad, one blatant example being the political messaging, which not only lacks self awareness (sometimes being so overbearing that it comes off as a satirization of leftwing politics), but by it's very nature pathologizes some actions as being innately good or bad.
The characters are slightly more nuanced in their writing but they will often narratively tell the audience to pick a side, telling us that someone is blatantly in the wrong.

>they will often narratively tell the audience to pick a side, telling us that someone is blatantly in the wrong.
kind of, but I feel like they just as often twist it and then make you sympathize with that person.

From a narrative perspective, there needs to be conflict and the audience will inevitably understand that someone has a moral upper hand in many situations, but the show balances it by flipping the table the next time around. Bojack isn't *always* the bad guy. Vanessa Gecko isn't *always* the villain.

>sometimes being so overbearing that it comes off as a satirization of leftwing politics
Yes, that's the point. It skews left because it's depicting life in the Hollywood entertainment industry, but it does also show some of the hypocrisy and ridiculousness of those views as well. I think your impression that it came across as satirical was very much intentional.

>>also have their downs

sebastian st clair was the cat version of mr peanut butter. in a war zone being a narcissist might be the only protection you have from getting PTSD. the fact that the writers dropped him shows that they were oblivious to missed opportunities from the very beginning, and solidified diane as a basic bitch that couldn't handle the hard shit

even if st clair was a piece of this, who the fuck else is going to be helping in a war zone in any way? he must have given more of a shit than literally any other character in the show. why would a narcissist risk their life at a battle front?

imagine writing a show where you have a snow leopard that's more interesting than anyone else, don't even make him an antagonist, then focus on boring weinstein shit

more like Diane saw she was just using the plight of others in the world to try to self aggrandize and fulfill herself and avoid confronting herself when seeing someone doing just that
