Yes, read the manga. The anime shockingly leaves too many important stuff out. Once you finish volume 14, watch the last 2 episodes of the 1997 anime at least for curiosity's sake. It's fricking kino and the OST is great. Also, don't let people tell you that "Berserk goes to shit after the Golden Age". It doesn't. It's a very well evolved story, nitpicks aside, and there's one major arc later on that's as good and longer than the Golden Age. You don't want to miss that one. Lots of action, KINO, character development, and LOTR-style questing.
1997 one is absolutely worth watching. The "newer" film trilogy is just a cut-down version of the 1997 anime, but the third/final film is still worth watching too.
The 2016 anime (the one you've heard about) must be avoided at all costs.
There's one good adaptation which is the 25 episode 1997 anime. But that leaves a lot out from the source material and drastically condenses the beginning crucial parts of the series. If you're getting into Berserk at all, just read the manga and skip the anime. You can watch the 1997 anime later to see how they adapted certain scenes if you like. That's what I did.

If you stop berserk after the golden age you have an excellent story and a great setup for a continuation. However it absolutely feels like the author had one story he wanted to tell but no fricking IDEA what he wanted to with it when it was over.
Imo there is nothing noteworthy about any of the parts after the golden age. They're like a collection of short stories that lead nowhere, where the golden age was one huge story with a notable payoff and a great twist. Nothing about the parts after the golden age feels particularly important, having a huge sword and a badass armor is certainly cool but it doesn't really feel like anything that would help him kill a god. Most of the chapters just feels like short stories about how fricked up the world is now, and doesn't really give you the sense that Guts is getting much closer to completing his goal.

Instead it was dicking about from one side story to another and I lost all intrest once the boat happened.
That was the plan until this page when Guts decided that protecting Casca was more important than getting revenge on Griffith. Then the story became about getting Casca's memories back. She just got her memories back last chapter, so the story was about to go in a new direction before Miura died.
