I've been playing sniper elite 5 and although it's a great game it's bad for this in places, the worst part is you can mantle, it's just random spots you arbitrarily can't and unlike a lot of things like this there's no way to tell visually if you can or not, although i'm 4 levels in and that has mostly just applied to the first level so far, I guess they just didn't want it to be completely an open field

Vader could have lifted the entire mass of sand on fire and tossed it aside. He could have grabbed the sniper, obi-wan, and the robot and immobilized them even until the fire was out. All of their suits are flame resistant in lore and could easily withstand running through it. The writers just wanted an easy out, but somehow forgot they literally just showed him blow the flames out so it was extra stupid.

I wonder if the budget was constrained. If they made a much larger fire, then you could argue that Vader used up all his force energy from putting out the fire the first time around and didn't have enough mana for the second time

Star Wars is capeshit but come on you can’t honestly believe this. Vader in this show has been shown to be nothing other than a ruthless killer.

The whole point of Vader’s internal struggle was that Luke initiated it in ROTJ by giving himself up to the emperor proving that he wasn’t destined to be like his father. Also proving that his father wasn’t destined to be like how Vader acted the past few decades. Luke strikes him down in anger exposing that Vader also has a mechanical hand and despite all they have in common Luke’s path forward doesn’t have to mirror his father’s.

Sure, maybe Vader somewhat struggles in this show. But enough to let OBI WAN KENOBI get away? No, that shits on the OT and Luke’s sacrifice. Par for the course given Disney’s history I guess.

            Anonymous

I’ll add, I can see Vader letting him go to frick with him more and torture him. But I can’t see him letting him go from internal struggle given when the show takes place.

Have you never had second thoughts about doing something while you're in the middle of it? I'm sure you've questioned why you're jacking off to something. This is like an analogue to that except for people who have to make important life decisions.

            Anonymous

This only happens the instant that one b***h shows up to rescue larry. Nothing we've seen in the episode until that point indicates vader had second thoughts about capturing the fricker so it ends up looking like darth's unable to walk around a small fire which is reasonable when you take this

What is happening on set that they can't understand the geography of where they're filming?

            >oh no a little branch
            >oh no, another thing I can easily sidestep

            into consideration.

              >Nothing we've seen in the episode until that point indicates vader had second thoughts about capturing the fricker
Yes, but everything in the entire series indicates he has emotional issues and is constantly conflicted in the same way Kylo is, just to a less embarrassingly obvious degree. The fire flaring to up like it did would stop anyone in their tracks. And when you stop, you think; and when you think, you doubt - especially when it comes to killing this poor facsimile of the best friend you've been seething about for so long. I agree it should have been set and framed better, but people are missing the point of the scene. Vader - in that small moment - didn't want to cross the flames. Or at least the part of him that did couldn't overpower the part that didn't. The duality between him and Anakin has been established since ESB when the two became the same character.

                Anonymous

I think the idea was that he at first wanted to see his friend/mentor burnt and tortured as he was, but like you say a brief pause in this made him reflect on it. In front of him was Kenobi, burnt and weak... pathetic looking really, being carried away by a droid, similar to Anakin having to be patched up by medical droids.

The problem is that in competent hands this scene would play out in a more operatic sense but it just looks really lame since Vader is pulling people out of their houses with the force one second and now he's like standing there and doesn't even want to walk around a small area on fire.

And the whole "they got away" thing is ludicrous since he'd have at least one destroyer in orbit and likely multitudes of smaller craft around just in case. But no... "they got away".

It was the combination of ten years of pent-up rage, realizing the futility of killing a washed up and pathetic Obi-Wan, and probably to a degree seeing Obi-Wan in pain and suffering the same pain he did. Vader thought he wanted it, but he didn't. At least not in that moment.

          Anonymous

It was shot like shit, but the literal fricking 30-second closeup of Vader's "face" as he just stood there and stared into the fire should be self explanatory. If this were damage control I wouldn't agree that the scene was fricking lame. Or maybe I would!!!! Maybe I'm just a false flagger because I can interpret human emotions correctly between characters in a film.

You can interpret the implied emotion when the camera lingers on his fricking mask for, again, thirty seconds. Usually this is code for staring longingly or thoughtfully at something. I know this is a big surprise for someone who only watches capeshit and nu-Wars. You know what he should have done? Thrown his arms up and given us a big "NOOOOO!" again! That would've done it!

The implication is that Obi-Wan rediscovers his will to fight after this scene at some point. In this series, he's running from Vader like a coward; in the original Star Wars, he pursues Vader and basically gives him no choice but to fight to the death, which of course as we know was a ruse all along. Even if Vader had conflicting emotions at this point, in his position he can't afford Obi-Wan infiltrating the Empire's most important weapon and getting out alive.

This discussion is problematic in general though, because ESB and RotJ Vader is a vastly different character than ANH Vader already. Or at least his intentions are vastly different. We've been retconning Vader since literally the third sequel, and it was only really by the third film - and some might even say the sixth - that his entire character was bared to us, and it was a man with a lot of regret as opposed to the automaton-like space enforce of the original film.

            > he pursues Vader and basically gives him no choice but to fight to the death

            ?

Ben Kenobi runs into Vader in a hallway, Vader even has his lightsaber activated already. Kenobi doesn't pursue him at any point

At any rate the stupidity of this show is that it has Kenobi rediscover his purpose in life... By abandoning quite literally his only mission in life (Luke) and having adventures off planet. It's bad writing because it's tailored to fanservice (we'll have Kenobi and Vader fight, we'll have prequel flashbacks, we'll have cameos by all the original cast), instead of telling an actual story

              Anonymous

Obi-Wan knows from the second he steps onto the Death Star what his plan is: to be killed by Vader and become a force ghost in front of Luke to give him the volition to fight him personally. From Vader's point of view, at that point, it's either kill or be killed. Kenobi is never fazed about his confrontation with Vader because he planned it. Vader has no time to consider killing him because Kenobi is actually a threat to him again at this point, unlike in the Disney series. I agree that the basic structure of this series is pretty shit, but there's nothing odd about Vader letting Obi-Wan get away or having conflicting emotions about killing him.

Obi-wan literally wanted to die since he was at the end of his life, it would distract vader, and he would still be able to help luke. Obi-wan pretty much self destructed himself and became a force ghost

I thought using those rear projections allowed for bigger sets and for them to see the scenario in unreal engine or whatever to shoot and apply the logistics accordingly

They probably want all possible options open to them.

If a different gun sells more toys, change it to that, if a different design is thought you have it still open, if country X doesnt accept guns then make it into something else and so forth

It's probably to let it all be chosen in post-production and not have the need to reshoot shit

              Anonymous

This. I was also thinking how there's a trend lately of re-using old footage in new movies and re-contextualizing them to make them fit. By shooting it on a greenscreen they could use the same footage again later for something else and have more options open for when they do so, especially if that scene gets cut.

I've seen other sets using that projection where they're bigger and have more real props, but yeah the impression the final product gives is they're filming entirely on a tiny little space and they dont even know what the geography is

otherwise anyone on set would have gone "we need to rewrite this or remake this space so Obi Wan or that character isn't reachable through just 5 extra steps"

Honestly, it's clear that they're filming on a pretty small set. Leia and Obi-wan are running at a brisk jog

Another moment is when Obi-Wan is panicking to go around that laser gate thing that cut the stormtrooper in half, he ends up shooting it.
But the geography of the scene means all he had to do was pick up Leia, and walk around the gate.
It was sloped up like a small hill, a man, a child, whatever anyone, could easily have walked around the gate

They can concoct any number of bullshit reasons for that. Like being on the lava planet so close to the sauce of his trauma helps with his darkside shit because fear leads to anger blah blah. They are 100% going to pussify Vader by making him freak outs because The Force Is Female and women are obsessed with trauma.

          Anonymous

yes, they already did that in the comics and mustafar is a planet strong in the dark side so that's even better for him

          Anonymous

Even if Vader is afraid "Fear leads to anger", so he'd just be afraid for 0.1 nanoseconds and then just move in Anger (the dark side)
If they actually try and make Vader really afraid, as in he won't go next to fire, that'd just be bad writing.

A man as strong as Vader, wouldn't let his fears control him, I used to have phobias, trauma, and I got rid of them by facing them, I don't believe Vader is so weak that in the 10 years timespan off screen, on many battles against Jedi, fighting for his life, and the military campaigns that he had never dealt with his fears.

A Sith needs to understand fear.

At this point I honestly think Kathleen Kennedy simply does not know what good direction is.
She's in charge of this multi-billion dollar franchise and she can't hire someone with an eye for space opera to helm this?

I mean look at this episode.
This is the first time Kenobi and Vader meet after Mustafar. And for this moment they chose some unremarkable planet that AGAIN looks like some sparsely populated dirt shithole with a small street of huts and like ... Vader and Kenobi go face to face in like ... a dirt dump lot full of piles of dirt. That's it.
That's the best they could've come up with for a space opera confrontation. Piles of dirt on a dirt lot on a dirt planet.
And it's directed in such a mundane and boring way that there's zero tension to it. Zero stakes. Zero thrills. Zero action, zero everything.

A fricking film student could at 4AM come up with a storyboard better than that and likely come up with a better location/backdrop too.

It just shows that Kennedy and Chow simply don't have an eye for space opera. They likely don't even GET the concept. This was literally directed as if it were some generic police procedural at best.

That sounds like the closest thing to actual kino even possible in the Star Wars franchise considering the actor and they aborted it.

No, they have precog sense for danger and the stronger you are in the Force the more easily it can influence and control your actions, remember? Literally shown and explained in ANH.

Outright spoken of when they sensed Padme was in danger in AotC as well.

His hand would have come up and blocked the shot upon sensing danger to himself.

I just finished watching and came here to post this. I can't believe they wrote and filmed that nonsense. Fire is gonna stop Darth Vader? There are so many ways he could have gotten him!
These two meeting is exactly what I was concerned about for this show, because how could they meet, after their initial split, and one of them not die? It is already affecting episode iv negatively if I'm supposed to believe that this show is their last meeting before then and not whatever was in my head when watching that movie for the first time. >i’m going to burn my former master
    >wow he is burning bad
    >oh my god I’m remembering everything
    >fighting the clone wars together
    >padme
    >omg i have no idea what to do
    >i better put him out
    >just bring him to me I guess guys
    >lady shows up and this entire thing goes to shit
    >what have I done
    >i was a terrible Jedi and now i am a terrible Sith
    >i can’t even kill him
    >lets obi wan escape
    >walks away in shame

Anakin has always had moments of failure and Vader is no different.
    He was emotionally frozen.
The writers just can’t convey it well.

this. i'd rather see more of a Leon / Mathilda-type relationship vs. some Curly Sue shit. this would actually make more sense and be more of a pottery moment since padme played mathilda. even add some awkward e-girl scenes in it as well a la "like a virgin"

Where the frick did the budget go

Let's break down the episode a bit

    >cgi ship lands on cgi planet
    >planet looks like any generic shithole barren planet we've seen many times before so no hours wasted on designing anything new
    >rolling hills with regular grass, dirt
    >loading robot looks like it could be swapped around any scifi franchise, nothing memorable about it
    >hover truck that looks like shit
    >village with huts and dirt buildings with bit of tech pasted on same as a tatooine set
    >Kenobi vs Vader in a dirt pile lot that is likely cgi'd anyway, so again no time or money wasted on designing anything

Nothing design-wise in this episode looks like any serious effort was spent on.
How about just some CHEAP alteration to make it more "starwars". A purple sky? Weird cloud shapes in the background. Giant cliffs? Giant structures looming in the distance? Red grass? Oddly shaped local architecture? Anything? Maybe even a custom stormtrooper design or at least some .... wait they did do something "new" .. Vader's little throne room.

It basically looked like something out of an Amiga demo scene routine or out of a late 90s PC CD-ROM adventure. A render made by a person who just discovered smooth marble texturing for the first time or whatever...

I'd pay top dollar to sit with Lucas and watch this for the first time with him and hear his comments.

So there's clearly a stormtrooper on the other side of the fire. Did he walk through it or was he over there before it ignited? Also, is it indicated that Vader has a fire phobia after being burned alive?
