Cinemas are going the way of the arcade. I'd say within 10 years they'll be completely niche. I wonder what they'll become. They're large commercial spaces. Though I guess residential is a possibility considering the housing crisis everywhere.

In quirky cities they're becoming bookstores, in boring cities they're becoming supermarkets, in based cities they're becoming porn theaters again

        >In quirky cities they're becoming bookstores
I thought they had already pretty much died due to Amazon? The last couple times I went to a book store they didn't have what I wanted in stock but offered to order it for me. Made no sense to me because I'd be waiting for it to be delivered to a place I had to come back to. Might as well get it directly delivered to my house in that situation, though I suppose they've got to ask.

the food gets to you before the movie starts and more or less they only come serve you if you smack the order on a piece of paper and hang it upright
and then they kinda crouch to get to your table and drop off the food then but i can confirm their food is good, the weird related pre-screening stuff is always interesting and the servers never got in the way of my sight lines

Stop speaking about Alamo like it's dead. They closed locations in a shitty area but are otherwise fine. Their locations in my city are frequently packed for any noteworthy release and the the special features sell out every time. You will kneel to your movie+dinner combo theater overlords. Soon all kinoplexes will follow this format.

Why not just bring in your own bag of Twizzlers and a drink? Literally no one says anything unless you bring in something really messy like a bowl of chili or a pizza, even though they sell pizza slices.

I brought a huge bag of pretzels and a 1L bottle of soda once and the guy at the ticket booth didn't say shit.

Some movies are over 3 hours long now, if your there with a girl she has to go the toilet at least every hour, thats not fun for girls on a date.

These theatres are no longer unique since AMC, Regal, Cinemark, etc. all have full service bars now. The only pull they have is they show classic/cult movies, but other independent cinemas do that better, because those other independent cinemas have subscription plans, like AMC/Regal/Cinemark/etc, where you get to see unlimited movies for free for $15 a month.
Their model is outdated and failed to keep up with the competition. All they had going for them was "MUH ALCOHOL WHILE WATCHING MARVEL MOVIES". Well, now AMC does that.

Make better movies and I'll start going to theaters again. Hell just show good older movies, I'd love to see something like aliens or lawrence of arabia in theaters.
The issue is not streaming, its not phones, its not genz or covid or torrenting or whatever the frick, they contribute sure, but the reason people aren't going to theaters now is that the average quality of movies has SERIOUSLY dropped, and everyone has noticed it whether they admit it or not. People don't want to drop 25 dollars and 2 hours of their life going out to see something that has a statistically low chance of actually being good.

To put into perspective how bad shit has gotten, if you went to the theater in 1999 you'd have a choice between Fight Club, The Matrix, The Mummy, The Phantom Menace, The Green Mile, Office Space, Eyes Wide Shut, The Sixth Sense, The Iron Giant, the Ninth Gate, and tons of other excellent movies.

People used to ask "whats the best thing to see in theaters right now?" now they ask "is there ANYTHING good showing in theaters right now?"
