          Pretty much this.
Anons can excuse why Barbie was a hit, but it was a hit, and more importantly NOT the norm.
Movie theaters have been trying to turn their image around of being terrible with better seating, but to most people in Bidenflation, the cost of attendance isn't worth it anymore after concessions. Especially for family movies. Barbie's a date movie, so you can only cover two people, but a family? Popcorn is barely cheaper in bulk and you have four people.

I remember when Spy Kids made a joke about going to the concession stand and buying a few things, then ending with "you just spent $35." That's hardly a joke anymore.

          >Anon, the rest struggle to get to $500m.
This is only a problem because the big production companies can't produce a movie for less than $200m anymore. Meanwhile Godzilla Minus One took home the oscar for best VFX on a budget of $15m.
The audience isn't the problem, it's their bloated budgets.

            Anonymous

The movie audience overall is dramatically shrinking, and the movie industry is raising ticket prices to make up for it.

You are correct though that the budgets are insanely overblown, and when you compare the quality of current movies with movies that came out 20-30 years ago looking better with small budgets by comparison even when adjusting for inflation, it gets even more ridiculous.

We still have occasional HUGE hits, which shows that the audience will show up if there's something the really want to see.

Top Gun Maverick tapped into everyone longing for the good old 80s style of movies, Barbie got all females going to the cinema to relive their childhood and see their favorite doll in live action, with a chunk of feminism on the side, Super Mario tapped into all the kids growing up with the game character, as well as giving parents an animated feature for their kids without a sexual political agenda.

You can make money on movies, even high budget ones, but you need to really APPEAL to a large target audience.

You need 2-2.5 production minimum to turn a profit. If Captain Marvel had been successful, we'd be 3 or 4 movies deep by now into her, but...we aren't. They did do a follow-up with The Marvels and it was a massive financial loss.

These are production budgets, they do not include promotion, ads are expensive as frick.

Also, the movie studio get ~50% of the domestic box office gross, and much less overseas, with the rest going to the theatres.

There’s a lot of reasons movies flop but the main one for this year is that the movies aren’t good. Both Garfield and Furiosa received middling reviews with a complete lack of excitement.
The new Godzilla X Kong and Planet of the Apes weren’t great either, but they did have enough of a good word of mouth to get people to watch it. Same for Dune, people won’t go to cinemas unless it’s for an exciting movie that they hear is worth it. Neither of this memorial week movies had this.

Barbie also exploded because people were excited about it, and that summer still had tons of other box office flops. Outside of Barbenheimmer, Spiderverse and Guardians, everything else underperformed.

No indeed, profitability exists irrespective of quality. You should enjoy the things that bring you pleasure - even if it is low-brow, lowest-common-denominator films like that list - and not worry about the pennies it made or did not make. Unless you take your enjoyment out of watching Hollywood Hindenburgs, I guess. I suppose in Miller's case it's lucky he's extremely old already, there won't be a studio "clap back" that matters to him.

        >Barbie
It's positively pathetic how often Barbie gets trotted in a desperate attempt to somehow prove that audiences want a certain type of film. It's disingenuous because it overlooks the glaringly obvious...

Barbie is a female-oriented franchise. It's made for female consumption and enjoyment. The film was marketed to that demographic and was massively successful.

Mad Max (Ghostbusters, Ocean's 11, etc.) is a male-oriented franchise. It's made for male consumption and enjoyment. The film was NOT marketed to that demographic and was catastrophically unsuccessful.

Do you understand? If you take a product inherently appealing to one demographic and then refuse to market to that demographic you are unlikely to have success.

Super Mario made $1.3 billion last year, targeted at the same demograhic, even the same main voice actor.

Having said that, Garfield had a relatively modest budget at $60 million, so it will eventually turn a modest profit.

Furiosa with a $170 million budget, doing worse than Garfield, will be a massive loss.

I’m not that anon so maybe I’m misreading him, but people used to just “go to the movies.” As in, we have nothing to do, what will we do tonight, let’s just go to the movies. Once you’re there, you find out what’s showing and watch whatever you think sounds good. What will we do for our date? Dinner and a movie. What movie? Whatever’s playing. We have a long weekend for Memorial Day, let’s go to the movies.
That’s not really a thing anymore. It doesn’t mean cinema is dead or that all movies will necessarily flop, but it does mean a lot of expectations need to change. You guys are referencing highly anticipated event films. Nobody spontaneously went to the movies and just decided then and there to watch Barbie. I knew I was going to watch Barbie a whole year before it came out, people were talking about it for months in advance. Same with Oppenheimer. If they were released on Memorial Day weekend, they would have been the best Memorial Day weekends in history. Every single movie released this weekend has underperformed, and people are scratching their heads trying to figure out why. The answer is that “going to the movies” is dead. People will go to theaters to watch a movie they have heard about previously and anticipated, but that’s it.

movies need to feel like a "can't miss this" to turn a profit, they need to be actual events. mario is just about the most recognizable character after mickey mouse and it was the first big budget movie he got in 30 years.
people simply don't have the disposable income to go see movies "just because", where before people would walk to a cinema and go "hey this movie looks cool, let's spend the afternoon watching this", now they're more likely to only go seeing movies they know they want to see.

Anon, I loved Furiosa too, but sometimes the answer is simple to explain. First, there’s a lot less people going to theaters these days. Of those that do, most of them don’t have the time, money or desire to watch more than one movie per weekend. And naturally, most people this weekend prefered Garfield, a far more familiar and timeless property and one that they can bring their whole friends and family with, than Furiosa, from a property that isn’t as familiar and rated R on top of it.

Ultimately it was all the usual suspects at once stacked on top of the other. Both were losers, but Garfield might just be able to save face by virtue of being the less expensive film.

It's because men are too moronic to understand that women do not like female action characters.
They love pointing the spotlight at the very few women who do and say "SEE? SEE? WOMEN LIKE WHAT I LIKE TOO!" like the morons they are.

Strong female characters are literally a male fantasy, they exist as a response to the male insecurity of women being around men other than them.

Going to the movies is fricked, you guys. Better face facts.

FACT: Movies became huge events and the budgets inflated out of control. Star Wars, Lord of the Ring, and then specially Marvel, and then DC and Star Wars again... those budgets were out of control crazy!

FACT: "Nerd culture" became a thing and suddenly watching movies for kids became an identity, justifying the crazy budgets for a good while.

FACT: Bubbles burst. Suddenly, movies with giant budgets could also flop, like regular movies. Except that these were flops that lost ridiculous budgets.

FACT: Streaming. That's all, just streaming. It killed cable already.

FACT: Young people don't have attention spans any more.

FACT: No one wants to go out. If people have to go out, they feel like they're being abused.

FACT: With cable gone and streaming being affordable, and people having huge HD TV sets at home, one can hardly blame people for watching movies at home. The theater just isn't as appealing. Don't act as if you don't understand this.

FACT: Reptilians don't exist, but extraterrestrials do and yes, they do control the government. In fact, the myth of reptilians is intentionally absurd, and was created by the alien elites precisely so it sounds ridiculous.

FACT: Are movies even good any more? Seriously, ask yourselves if they're really that good. There's a reason why so many of us are exploring old classics. Not that there aren't new movies that are good, but so many shitty ones come out that no one really wants to give them a chance.

FACT: Movies aren't impressive any more. This isn't anyone's fault, but movies tend to all look good. Remember when good special effects were something to talk about?

This is the right way to go about things. Animation doesn't need to have a budget in the hundreds of millions. The problem with the ones that do are that they always want to use the newest tech every time, rather than use what's already been the tried and true + reusing assets from previous films to cut costs.

        Anonymous

        >Animation doesn't need to have a budget in the hundreds of millions
Disney could've made easy steady money with their films had they understood that. Rather than producing expensive live action remakes of their classic library, they should’ve produced 3D animated remakes and reused the princess models from Wreck-It Ralph 2 to do so. With every movie, they could reuse the assets to cut costs and produce them quick and on the cheap. So even if these movies don’t make a billion, they’d still make a healthy profit.

    >Is Garfield a dead franchise?
Unionically a Gorefield/The Last Monday animated series would be a great success.

I wanna say yes but I struggle to think of when it was ever alive in the first place. The fact that it didn't just die out as a Sunday funny is bizarre to me. What's so great about this stupid cat?

Garfield has a weird ironic fanbase (left-wing for some reason) that morphed into a genuine fanbase despite the series being awful.

You had to be there. In the 1980's. Garfield was, and still is, the ultimate merchandising and cultural juggernaut. You had to have owned at least one piece of Garfield merch throughout the course of your life, I guarantee it.

I don't understand how hollywood has gotten so much worse that they can't even get Garfield's personality right anymore. He barley has one, but it doesn't fit hollywood tropes so he has to do airquotes saying "ugh, my DAD vic!" The old live action movies did him better.

    >scooby doo finally gets another theatrical movie, this time it's animated
    >the characters are completely remodernized despite the usual versions being fine for everything else, and just an excuse to attempt a hanna barbera cinematic universe
    >mario bros. finally gets another theatrical movie, this time it's animated
    >the bros are split up for most of the film and lugi does nothing because they needed to show off modernized ragebait click for views peach
    >garfield finally gets another theatrical movie, this time it's animated
    >the characters are vaguely remodernized from what little there is to even depict, and just an excuse for the most overt product placement saves the day bullshit, and yet another parent issues flick from the pampered prisses in california
