Wait, you didn't read graphic novel that fills in the first 3 chapters of the story. The movie covers chapters 4-6.

Exactly. What kind of butthole doesn't read the obscure, barely advertised web comic that contains the first half of the story?
Seriously though, that web comic trend of the late 2000s was gay as frick.

        Anonymous

It wasn't a webcomic, but an actual comic book you had to go to a shitty, smelly, damp comic store to buy or pirate in low-res scans

Does anyone remember that moronic woman who said the wachowski's stole her script for the matrix? because their entire output following the first one makes me think she was telling the truth.

        Anonymous

Doubt. The Matrix feels a lot less original when you read the same comics the Wachowskis did.
Some directors just only have one good movie in them, just like the Donnie Darko guy.

People like to post this over and over for some reason, but the Invisibles has almost nothing to do with the Matrix.

            Anonymous

            this
read it because people said the matrix was inspired by it, and the similarities are almost nonexistent
it's pretty gay and stupid, also

            Anonymous

Blame early internet opinion pieces that became scripture. Think like Cracked and the like. If anything, The Matrix was most heavily inspired by that one old film (possibly novel) that was remade as The 13th Floor. Or just simulation arguments in general, which thanks to bad journalism, people think originate with Nick Bostrom and not Descartes or Plato.
Granted Bostrom has a unique form of the simulation argument (the amount of simulated universes outweigh the amount of base realities) but they don't make that distinction.

This is the same opinion-shaping that made GB2 and RotJ "bad sequels." They used to be perfectly acceptable.

The vibe is very similar when you actually put some thought into it. Counterculture misfits fighting against the invisible power that's controlling society.
It has no connection to the visual style of The Matrix but the Wachowskis weren't behind that (agents were wearing gas masks in their early story boards). That stuff came from the studio people and the leftover sets of Dark City.

            Anonymous

There are a handful of similarities. Some obvious ones, and then a couple of doubtful ones. They definitely lifted from it, here and there. In the end 'The Invisibles' is bigger in scope and had more ideas and is a different beast altogether.

there's a rumor that richard kelly stole the original scripts for donnie darko and southland tales from his dead film school buddy
it's complete bullshit, but it's a cool theory

I don't buy it for a second. I watched three of his movies including the killing botton one and they all carry his style. It's like he always has that heavy lore he constructs the plot around, it's surreal logic, barely coherent, moronic even, but it's there.

            Anonymous

            yeah, I agree
you can even go back to his Holes script, which he wrote in 1999, and see much of his style and themes present

    It's fricking awful.
Everyone thought he was the next Lynch because of Donnie Darko.
Turns out he's a complete hack who does know how to direct actors or build atmosphere or tension.
The Rock gives an all time worst performance.
Terrible cringe dialogue throughout just like Donnie Darko.

Remember watching this when i was an edgy teenager. even read the comic before watching the movie. i'll give him credit for his ambition, but the movie was a piece of shit and "pimps don't commit suicide" was such a cringe attempt at a cool one-liner.

This movie is not even slightly edgy you homosexual

I LOVE this movie. Not because it's good (because it objectively is not) but because it's so damn audacious. It really tries to do something and I respect that a lot. It's not so-bad-it's-good, it's good despite the fact that it's really bad.

That substance caused the cop and the Rock to travel back in time, creating a paradox of two of each in the same universe. If they come into contact with each other, the universe is destroyed. Rock 2 dies, so that doesn't happen with him. However the two cops do come into contect and destroy the universe.

Film was unexpected and possibly unintentional kino.
Prefigured the feeling of doomscrolling on your phone at 3 AM and wondering if the rest of the world is insane and moronic.
SNL cast members acting out how it looks when a person with depression interacts with activist types.
Is our world going to end with a whimper or a bang?

    With Christmas lights
    A city of candles

    Fresh sheets
We are all filled with dense clouds

That have us sunk into the mattress
I need to touch your skin

    Three days was the morning
    My focus three days old
    My head, it landed
To the sounds of cricket bows
    Oh, oh

    I am proud man anyway
    Covered now by three days

    Three ways was the morning
    Three lovers in three ways
    We knew when she landed
    Three days she'd stay

I am a proud man anyway
    Covered now by three days
    We saw
    Shadows of the morning light
    Shadows of the evening sun
Till the shadows and the lights were one

    True hunting is over

Without game, men prey on each other
The family weakens by the bite we swallow
    Oh, oh, oh

    True leaders gone
    Of land and people
We choose no kin but adopted strangers
The family weakens by the length we travel
    Oh, oh, oh

All of us with wings, oh, oh, oh
All of us with wings, oh, oh
    All of us with wings

I tried watching this for the first time in a while the other day. I couldn't get through more than an hour.

Obviously Kelly was going for a low-but-highbrow critique of the modern condition, but it ended up being more low than high. The writing is contrived, the plot is a meandering mess, and the characters are all too plastic and preachy. It's like a bad imitation of David Foster Wallace. It's an epic Clown World shitpost that doesn't even have the courtesy to be funny.
