He really doesn't grow that much. He has some hardships, but he never takes responsibility for things and pretty much is still the rich kid that got a job through connections and his parents bought him a BMW.

No doubt about that. AJ was a great character, but he didn't really grow (no arc as Chris would say), but that's fine. AJ is like a lot of guys that kind of just blow through life not knowing there place and not learning or growing much along the way. It fits his character
Besides the obvious young guy figuring himself out, I think it's meant to parallel Tony. He wants them to be part of the mob life but also does not because it's brutal, but ALSO resents his kids for "rejecting" him in that way (coming from his relationship with his mom). The kids keep changing as to represent his lack of influence on them and that instability of identity, while Tony more or less avoids change.
