There's a Japanese arcade in the old mall near me (it's still a mall but mostly empty) and I got drunk with the manager, he took me around the empty back rooms of the mall. It felt like back rooms and I was raped.
For real. My father used to own this building downtown in my country and the top floor was pretty much empty and looked just like this. Complete with the tacky wallpapers, half broken fluorescent lights, and a very old elevator.
not anymore Black person. everyone here is a crusty old frick now. youre the weird one if youre under 25 and on Cinemaphile. go back to Snapchat or something

seems like the uncanny valley effect but for places rather than people.
personally i feel nothing watching the fan movies and the "lore" has no hooks or interest beyond "its a bit weird!"
There was an /x/ screencap from 2014 of someone describing the concept of liminal spaces. It's just something that eventually found its way to normie internet.
It's a space in between where the emptiness (though it's made to filled with people) can suggest certain emotions, either defined or undefined. Or it's just an empty place, it's a very subjective thing.
Abandoned buildings are pretty spooky but they aren't liminal spaces. A liminal space is like a room the dimensions of which change depending on where you are in it. Or a staircase you always go down.
Now tiling like that could transition straight into impossible geometry. Or at least could be used for creating the perception of impossible geometry.
>A liminal space is like a room the dimensions of which change depending on where you are in it. Or a staircase you always go down.
absolute horseshit. that's non-euclidean geometry. a liminal space is somewhere familiar that has been stripped of it's context, rendering it unfamiliar. an abandoned building isn't liminal if it looks abandoned since you have context for why it's empty. an empty but functioning building is liminal since the lack of visible activity seems like a disruption of everyday life that isn't immediately explained which is why the word 'liminal' is used. if something is wrong but you can't explain why, you're caught in the eerie space between leaving the original state behind, but you can't quantify what the new state is yet, so there's a feeling of transience.
It’s such a weird thing that it’s universal but has no real biological basis. It’s one of those things that makes you feel like the simulation is trying to reveal itself but won’t go all in.

Are abandoned swimming pools supposed to be scary? This looks comfy
If I were in a big space like that and everything was quiet, I'd get the feeling I wasn't really alone, like there was something else lurking around, something "other" that I wouldn't want to be anywhere near.
Maybe it's because I've probably been playing too much Silent Hill, haha
Why would he be? Most people get that feeling, hence the popularity of this subject. Are you sure you don't have a deadened sense of self-preservation?
Haha. I know what that anon is talking about
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Howe_Lovatt >Peter, being an adolescent dolphin, frequently had sexual urges, which included rubbing himself on Lovatt. >The urges disrupted Peter's lessons, and taking Peter to a downstairs pool with two female dolphins proved to be a logistical issue for Lovatt. >Eventually, Lovatt relieved Peter's urges herself
>Since neither his communication experiments nor his LSD research were proving fruitful, Lilly's Dolphinarium eventually lost all funding. Due to the lack of funding, they moved to an abandoned bank building in Miami.[1]
>Since the building lacked sunlight and space, Peter quickly deteriorated and eventually ended his life by drowning. Dolphin activist Ric O’Barry explains, "Dolphins are not automatic air-breathers like we [humans] are... Every breath is a conscious effort. If life becomes too unbearable, the dolphins just take a breath and they sink to the bottom. They don’t take the next breath."[1]

I used to sneak around campus buildings at night
Many times the main outside doors are locked but not the inside ones, so if a bunch of buildings are connected with halls or tunnels or other buildings, you can wander around a lot
I would just hang out studying in one place until late at night and the guards wouldn't kick me out as I was just a studying student or something
Then I would read or explore
Hotels and convention centers too
I find it very comfortable to be in places that usually have a lot of people but are empty at the time
Do people really find the concept of the Backrooms terrifying? I mean maybe the monsters, yeah, but the area itself? Take out the monsters and you've got trillions of square miles and multiple levels where you can get away with doing literally anything you want that you couldn't do here because you're mostly alone and there's no one around to judge you. Like there's forest levels, suburban levels and city levels and even a level with a heckton of swimming pools.
Like you can throw a huge one-person party in a giant mall and run around drunk and naked (heck if you're into crossdressing you can do that too, who's gonna be around to stop you?) and blasting your favorite music without being arrested because there's no cops there either.
Guess it depends on the rules of the liminal space universe. Does food and water stay fresh? Does electricity still work? If so, then yeah it’s be pretty fun.
The people that are scared and die are the ones that keep their humanity. The ones that adapt and enjoy themselves like you're describing become the monsters. That's the general idea of the lore, at least.
i once explored an abandoned corporate headquarters. it was fun and fascinating at first but quickly became too unnerving and scary to stay long. too many moving shadows and whispers.
ive been planning that since 2019 or so. at best ive learned 3d modeling well but i dont have the drive to make the project itself
I hope GPU prices come down a lot when the next generation of GPUs come out this year. My GTX 1060 is nowhere near good enough for making and rendering today's stuff. I wanted to get an RTX 3000/RX 6000 GPU but the prices have been way too insane for this past year and a half so I had to hold out.
>Do people really find the concept of the Backrooms terrifying? I mean maybe the monsters, yeah, but the area itself? Also I think it would be cool to explore abandoned places like that listening to synth-wave.
The original concept of backrooms was literally JUST the drab yellow-green halls stretching on towards almost infinity with no water or food, no treasure, no landmarks, and no way to navigate and no way to escape unless you "clip" back out.
It was moreso scary in the sense of absolute isolation and possible death in a place that makes no sense.

Only zoomers find it scary. The rest of us think they're comfy.
Most people find dark abandoned buildings creepy, which is why the Silent Hill series is so successful. Stop pretending to be a big boy who doesn't afraid of anything.
Half of the fear of being alone comes from a fear of NOT being alone. So it's safe to say a lot of people who are afraid of these kinds of places are scared of not having anyone to protect them from any malicious entities. Which is also why the initial concept of the "backrooms" implied there were monsters present.
I think Silent Hill is good being creepy because its dark, dirty, abandoned, and has weird moments where you aren't sure what is real or not. Like the prison in Silent Hill 2 where you walk down to the basement for almost a minute of length. Then of course you have the monsters and odd characters that make the games more weird and creepy. Liminal spaces are usually comfy to me because they are just simply abandoned places, no creepy things or nonsense with them.
HOLY HECKIRINO! I just LOVE the Backrooms and all liminal space :D. But kind stranger I have a secret for you, the ultimate Easter egg of reality is the feeling of fricking BIBLICALY ACCURATE Angels INSIDE Liminal Spaces TO the tunes of [Future Funk], [Lofi beats to study and relax to], AND [The Caretaker Everywhere at the End of Time 1-6]. The Incident (2014)
I always shill this film because it literally took the concept of the "backrooms" and made it into a horror film before it was cool. Its a mexican film and its decent. Its about groups of people getting suck in liminal spaces for eternity and it does it properly, unlike zoomers who resort to adding cheap shit like "levels" and monsters and shit.
I think a lot of the liminal space images people post the fear or unease comes from the momento mori aspect. Especially when it is a picture of an empty room form a by gone era. It makes you feel uneasy because it was an area full of life and now its dead.
Do videogames like the Stanley Parable or Portal 2 count as liminal space movies?
Because I love this games particularly for the feeling of being alone in a giant, eerie abandonned building
If you're not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you'll end up in the Snackrooms, where it's nothing but the scent and flavour of delicious Lays™ original recipe crisps, the delight of lightly salted and seasoned potatoes and approximately six hundred million square miles of other flavors of Lays™ crisps to enjoy.
God save your waistline if you see these crisps nearby, because they sure as hell won’t.
In the UK we call it the "Walkersrooms", it's inhabited by an eldritch crisp-munching ex-football player that constantly shits on the floor and tells you his unsolicited political opinions.
Frick Cinemaphile liminal spaces are comfy
I have no idea what this meme is or why people have been pushing it on Cinemaphile the last year.
zoomers just discovered the concept thanks to /x/
This was the upstairs level at every mall in the 90's.
There's a Japanese arcade in the old mall near me (it's still a mall but mostly empty) and I got drunk with the manager, he took me around the empty back rooms of the mall. It felt like back rooms and I was raped.

What is this obsession with the word “zoomer”? You guys talk like if people younger than 25 weren’t 95% of Cinemaphile
The dumb high school kids that post here deserve to be ridiculed mercilessly.
Year 2000 zoomies already have their bachelor degrees and are either working adults or doing masters.
I miss when people called me a millenial instead of a zoomer. Expecting gen alfas to have the same situation in a few years.
only someone that's been groomed would respond like that
not anymore Black person. everyone here is a crusty old frick now. youre the weird one if youre under 25 and on Cinemaphile. go back to Snapchat or something

Yeah, we were. And are still here.
You're here forever.
maybe Cinemaphile was the real backrooms we made along the way
does time stop when you're in the backrooms? can I go there to take a nap?
IIRC time is non-linear in the Backrooms. You don't age like you do in this universe and even when you "die", you don't actually permanently die.
frick ya. grabbing a pillow, several quilts, and food to share with Slenderman (so he doesn't eat me)
The Backrooms is not an old concept, it was created by zoomers.
lolno.
This reminds of the insurance place my mom used to work back in the mid 90's. After school sometimes I'd go there and hang out the back and watch tv or whatver.
Why did they add that bit the end and ruin it?
Astroturfing for the 2020s aesthetic
Dunno but I’m supremely intrigued by that /x/ greentext about accidentally clipping out of the real world.
I think it started when zoomers started looking at some default gmod maps when empty and turning it into a spooky meme how everything felt "off"
seems like the uncanny valley effect but for places rather than people.

It's a normal feeling, humans rely on groups for survival.
Absence of groups leads to a heightened sense of potential danger to oneself.
