Anyone else completely checked out of current year media?

I haven't watched a newly released song or film in about 5 years and I've been actively avoiding anything post-2010 for the last 2. All the best stuff came out in the 70s and 80s anyway. Never had much interest in video games, beyond the old arcade classics.

I checked out between 2013-2021 but 2022 and 2023 has been amazing for movies. I think I've seen more movies between 2022-2023 than I have between 2013-2021.

The only movie from the last 5 years I actually bothered to see was The Lighthouse, which I liked. Everything else looked gay, antiwhite, capeshit, or some kind of reboot/rehash.

In terms of tv I’ll probably watch the new season of Righteous Gemstones this year, that’s about it

Every time I've taken a chance on something new I've been disappointed. Dark, Barbarian ect, tv always claims it's the exception and it never is. I don't believe the west is capable of making anything truly great any longer. Top Gun was the last thing I saw that was mildly interesting and that was only because of the raw thrill of real fighter planes the story and acting aside from cruise was still garbage.

Every now and then my BF makes me check out a new show, he even made me watch Rick and Morty against my will, but aside from what he has me watch I don't feel like I've consumed really any media since like... 2013?

People are gonna give you shit anon and say that you're missing out on good stuff, but disregard that shit. I watch mostly older stuff too and just wait for good word of mouth to check out the 3-5% of entertainment that isn't pozzed garbage.
    >The Stranger (2022)
    >The Chosen tv show
Don't know your tastes, but these are two newer things I enjoyed a lot.

Definitely. Right now I'm watching 70s/80s kung fu movie, before that it was classic Westerns. Frick just about anything from the last 10 years, although there are exceptions. I no longer look forward to new releases I look forward to new HD scans or remasters of old movies

Pretty much. It's funny, I once used to greatly dislike nineties media but as it got more distant I started being able to appreciate it for what it was, then the same happened to some 2000's stuff, but the shitshow that cinema has been since the 2010's is something I'll never warm up to.

Yeah, reminds me of that Star Trek TOS episode where the planet is doomed and the population escapes into its own past.

Fortunately we are way past the point where a human being could physically watch every movie ever made. I worked it out once and don't remember the exact date, but somewhere like 1970 not counting foreign films or TV shows, and watching 24/7. Probably before that, I really don't recall. It's not all top tier cinema, but at this point you're basically like a mosquito sitting on an Olympic-size swimming pool full of blood wondering if you'll ever run out and starve. You wont.

But you can starve the homosexuals making CURRENT YEAR shit if you avoid paying them for the old stuff.

      Anonymous

I do remember working it out was complicated by when you were born. So like someone born in 1900 could have watched every film up to 1970 or something like that before they fell behind. I was trying to work it out for my Dad because he's a big movie buff, so being born in the 40's he wouldn't have even gotten that far, since it's a exponential growth.

Basically if you're a Zoomie, you're so far behind the eight ball, you basically have what is effectively an infinite amount of backlog you could never get through even if you tried. The good news is that's probably still true if you narrowed it down by rating.

I mean I've read a lot of classic books too like 'Moby Dick', (and invariably found there are damn good reasons they are considered classics), but I sure as frick don't have enough lifetimes to read them all.

While i do understand what you mean i believe you are not entirely correct. Sure enough contemporary mainstream media seems to be going through a rough patch but if you move away of all those big IPs targeted to the lost generation you are sure to find that good movies and shows and music are still being made.

It`s a good age for independent film makers. Equipment capable of delivering professional results (in the hands of talented and knowledgeable individuals) is cheaper than ever before. There is an unprecedented amount of cheap and open source software too so editing and even visual effects and CGI are not exclusively for Hollywood anymore and there are a number of ways of publishing audio visual work that allows cinematographers to reach out to people wanting alternative movies. And i am not talking about "content" or "film student" tier stuff, sure, there are a lot of those but i mean for example old directors that don`t get the big budgets anymore like Verhoeven or Polanski just to mention that some of those old directors that are still somewhat active. Just because Hollywood has forsake authors does not mean they are gone.

Glad I’m not alone. I think the last time I saw a movie in theaters of my own free will it was in 2019 or 2020. All these new Netflix, Amazon, Hulu shows they make are all kinda the same. Digging up the corpse of some old beloved piece of media and parading it around like a marionette. They sanitize the corpse of anything they don’t approve of. All of these shows and movies feel less like works of art and entertainment and more like the product of a corporate marketing board trying to get the largest piece of the pie chart. Boomers clearly had some shit figured out. I’ll shamefully admit that, by and large, I can’t get into black and white films. Though I very much enjoyed Metropolis.

    >ITT we pretend every year the majority of content wasn't 3/10 or worse because we were born in 1997 and don't have first hand experience of anything

      Anonymous

Then logically we’d end up with tastes reflective of someone who likes new stuff. Let’s assume that 3/10 is the average every year. And it goes without saying that more and more movies are being produced every year because the cost of making them goes down. So…while 3/10 would be the average every year, you’d have a larger pool of movies with more high-scorers as time goes on. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

        Anonymous

The pool is higher. You just don’t watch movies outside of your little bubble

That’s pretty presumptuous, although I guess taste in movies is subjective. I’d also add that an ungodly amount of movies today seem to appeal to nostalgia.

I can catch random forgotten old black and white movies on TCM and be entertained. Not classics, not films that are culturally significant or iconic, just any old movie from the 1930s is better than 99% of Hollywood films made today

        Anonymous

I concur. Also, much as awards can be bullshit, even back then, it's seems less so the further you go back, or maybe even award-bait simply had merit in the old days.

But a good example of a film that won a tonne of awards that actually deserved them is Amadeus. Sometimes it works in reverse where the awardgays have to rush to begrudgingly praise something with actual merit that people like, lest they look like total morons.

Mostly. I tried watching the new Game of Thrones show until I got to the blackwashing + miscegenation part and stormed out of the room. Didn't even bother checking on Witcher, Wheel of Time, or the LOTR show. Tried one episode of Star Trek Discovery and it was miserable.
The reality is that whatever good combination of production and talent used to exist is just not there anymore. It's angry activists cargo culting their way to a Blackrock fortune. Why watch any of this?

      The opinions or realizations?
What is there to look forward to? The capeshit with it’s decrease in quality? The heavily politicized television shows? The boring CGI fests?
The only recent television show I was interested in was Better Call Saul. Look at the various popular topics here. Euphoria is just teenage drama and troony propaganda. We get FOTM movie threads which eventually fizzle out. Some (not-capeshit) movies are decent but most are forgettable. Avatar 2. Top Gun 2. Nope. They quickly become forgotten and have little rewatchability.

Generally, but it's because a lot of it just isn't interesting. Reboots, remakes, sequels, prequels. Yay, Magnum PI... reboot. Quantum Leap... reboot. That X Show... reboot. etc. etc.

I'll stick with watching Murder, She Wrote and Columbo re-runs.
