Because it was a fun, campy movie that harkened back to classic adventure serials while being unafaraid to embarass the "sillier" parts of Aquaman's lore while treating it completely serious in-universe. It was earnest and genuine, opposed to the cynical MCU movies where characters constantly need to use sarcasm to let the audience know that they too think all of this silly comicbook shit is stupid.

This. It's a completely fun romp with attractive leads, and a minimum of girlboss shit. What's more, Amber is there to be the shallow love interest, and Kidman is still hot and playing a perfectly maternal MILF. The movie isn't shy about reminding you that they're mothers, and that is their primary role. Though I'm curious at how that would have worked with the scenes that were cut. Hope it's made enough to get an extended edition.

So much THIS. It stands as a very rare example of 'would fit with classic 80s action movies' (but with different special effects).

      >n-no it wasn't a failure, domestically it was the best 4 days of a dc justice league character solo movie that wasn't set in North America and has a polynesian star and was released during a full moon in november, no other movie that fits all of that criteria did as well as this one!

It was a pretty decent movie. Not a lot of politics or stupid bullshit, fairly mild on the quips.

Mostly it's just Momoa and Ed Warren from The Conjuring beating people up and adventuring.

Crazy that Aquaman 2 still won't even make half what Aquaman 1 did at the box-office, the movie-going landscape has changed so much in the past 5 years. Even The Marvels made $925 million dollars less than Captain Marvel, which only came out a few months after the first Aquaman too.

      Anonymous

Captain Marvel was absolutely banking on the YOU HAVE TO SEE IT AS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE AVENGERS FINALE. Aquaman this whole time was standing on it's own, and even as the last gasp of a dying universe, it still punched above it's weight class. The Marvels crashed and burned because without the Avengers, it has nothing.

      >Even The Marvels made $925 million dollars less than Captain Marvel, which only came out a few months after the first Aquaman too.
That's because Captain Marvel was released directly between two of hte biggest movies of all time, Infinity War and Endgame, and most of the promo material and trailers was hyping up the movie to be critical to undertanding what happens in Endgame.

The movie was genuinely bad and torn from the arms of the director at every step but films about attractive hetero people going on silly adventures are and should be a box office pull.

if the theatrical cut of Aquaman 2 is indicative of James Gunn's DCU, it's over

Isn't Superman whatever the first part of his DCU? I know he has been promoting a bunch of other DC films before that but that's expected from the currently franchise leader. Remember when he called The Flash the best movie of 2023?
