I wish there were more monsters in movies that don't look they exist only to scare me. I can't be scared by the pic in the OP because it's too obviously supposed to spook me and that creates disassociation that makes me realize how fake it is.

Nah, but I mean something like a great white shark looks terrifying, but I believe it exists for reasons other than scaring me. Same with tarantulas or other scary looking animals. Modern day monsters always look so over the top tbh.

Scary designs lift things from real life because real life things scare us due to instinct. Big mouths = predator = thing that might eat me. Insects/bugs = venom and filth. The beady eyes are hard to read emotion in, and as emotional creatures that rely on body language it to determine threats in non-verbal things, inability to read emotion scares us.

There's also the thing in nature where predators will have appearances specifically for the purpose of letting anything know it is indeed a dangerous predator.

Annihilation, that movie about the four chicks entering a weird forcefield, has a beat that stalks and kills them. The people killed by it get absorbed into it, and when it growls or roars you can hear human cries mingled with it. The scene where it stalks them inside a house is pretty good.

They ruined the design in the sequel though. Gareth spent years designing it to be specifically what he created, and then they just change everything in the next one, and then don’t change the design ever again?

Not really, just made the spines more classical & the tail shorter.

Only change I really didn't like was the extended grin crease he had in GVK.

They ruined the design in the sequel though. Gareth spent years designing it to be specifically what he created, and then they just change everything in the next one, and then don’t change the design ever again?

There are not many, but i think that it's not about the design of the monster, but the way it is presented. I think that the most memorable monster designs where the ones that where used either with subtlety, or sparingly, and with great build up and atmosphere.

The monster/puppet design is cool, but Possum is super overrated as movie. It's one of those "movies" that's just a man wandering around aimlessly for an hour and a half and then it ends. It's not even all that atmospheric. The filmmakers came up with a cool monster design but then had no idea what to actually do with it, especially with their low budget.

If by modern you mean the 21st century, there haven't been that many iconic monsters. Most normies can recognize Jason, Freddy, Chucky, etc. even if they may not know what movie they are from but they're from pre-2000s.
Annabelle did well I think, so maybe that. Pyramid Head is recognizable to many vidya gamers so maybe that. 21st century horror hasn't produced many icons.

  75. 2 years ago

Surprised he hasn't been posted yet either
His entire scene is one of the best moments of horror in any film. So much lore and dread just from looking at the enviornment around him. The overwhelming greed he possesses to always creeped me out. Like he has this huge feast and if you take so much as a grape he'll eat you alive. Such a great scene,I still never quite think the little girl will escape when he starts slowly chasing her down. When I was a kid this whole sequence terrified me but I knew it was kino.
