You only truly enjoy and get invested into media when you are a child and don't fully understand reality or life yet. By the time you're around 25-30, it becomes very difficult to get super invested. And that's a good thing, by the way. You don't want to be a manchild soiboi funko pop collector who pisses himself when the new star wars trailer comes out. Becoming centered and grounded in reality is a good thing, that's just maturity. You don't want to forever be a moronic child with no agency or understanding of things.

"You're too old" is just nonsense. This isn't like with music or fashion wear or street slang. Stories don't require you to be a certain year of age to enjoy them. The people funding, producing and directing these stories are way, way older than you. This isn't about age. It's about culture. The people making modern content don't live like you and me. They live and die by their fundamentalist religion of subversion and deconstruction.

And even if there was pozzed shit, it wasn't crammed down your throat. I remember the very underrated WB series Popular having an episode with a teacher that cross-dressed. It was actually done in a way that didn't preach, it just made you realize that things weren't going to change the way people wanted and the cross-dressing teacher was forced out.

Or even in Homicide: Life on the Street had an episode where a white detective thought a black Caribbean woman being hit by a white bus driver was racially motivated while his African-American partner was more nuanced and didn't buy it. Turns out the Caribbean woman made a mistake due to her upbringing and was on the wrong side of the driver's view because she was unfamiliar with the US driving lanes and the white guy hit her by mistake. Unfortunately, everyone immediately jumped on the old white driver because they thought he was being racist since he was always a grumpy douche. You can't make an episode like this today.

No. In America corporations control everything, and have a tyrannical level of "market" control over content thanks to endless mergers.

Even when there is "new content", the majority of it is basically stupid rehashed political bullshit with a touch of social media cringe developed by out of touch liberal californians.

So your choice as a consumer is either "Corporate mandated sequel bait" or "Serialized, sociopolitically conscious drivel".

It'd be better if we could get small independent studios going around the country, this way we get real diversity of ideas, and not just what suits and snobs from a single state push.

        Anonymous

        >a handful of wealthy individuals?
it was many multiple handfuls. each city was run by a separate oligarchy, multiply by hundreds of cities. trains cut this number down - cities and states formed power blocs to dominate other cities and states. radio cut this down more. the first "american" national (instead of regional) dialect/accent was chicagoan, not ny or la, because the great plains allowed their radio signals to carry over the largest population. globohomosexual won't slow down until we run out of hydrocarbons

lol, this is the simplest shit ever. the global slave plantation is just that, you're right it's no different in a theoretical sense. however in a heirarchical sense, greater organization requires logarithmically more middlemen, with each layer performing less work. More middlemen = less average profit per participant and more specifically, the guys at the top and middle aren't taking paycuts. This is justifiable with shallow organizations because the head of the organization bears a lot of risk of poor decision making. Frick up and you're out of business, the buck stops there. Even small business owners who fail are still smart, hardworking, discplined, self-reliant, and can usually handle criticism. However, middle managers make a lot of decisions, but are less likely to filtered by mistakes - they can pass the blame up, down, or to other managers. When the heirarchy gets too deep (4+ layers), then middle manager's success is no longer directly tied to business success: your job stops being about making profit and becomes about making your boss happy.
TLDR: globohomosexual is a pyramid scheme where you're a field Black person, and you get fricked by the house Black person +15% more for every house Black person and whipcracker until you get to the top. lower top is better.

The problem is it's worse now, because it's like it was in the lates 1800 early 1900s, as opposed to the 60s, 70s, and 80s. We're back to a "standard oil" way of living thanks to all these corporate mergers.

Zoomers born post 1996 dont realize that a lot of the huge entertainment companies we have now are composed of companies and IPs that used to compete with each other.

It's BAD that Disney owns so many IPs now. Disney used to have to compete with a lot of those IPs. Competition breeds creativity, whereas mergers and monopolies breed overpriced stagnation.

It's a mix. There's tons and tons of incredible content out there to consume, you just have to work for it a bit more. I go to this independent movie theater that plays 80s and 90s movies constantly. Saw Face/Off there last week, but even that screening was slightly ruined by Cage-morons who think literally everything he says/does is funny. Saw Cowboy Bebop, Scream 2/3, Repo Man twice, Killer Clowns, seeing True Lies this weekend.

For brand new movies are all just the same bullshit over and over and over. Reboot/remake/sequels over and over and over.

    Jurassic Park Dominion/6
    Matrix 4
Top Gun 2 (albeit, I haven't seen it but people are swearing by it)
    The Batman
    Candyman remake
    Halloween Kills
    Ghostbusters 4
    Marvel stuff

I'm just jonsing for some fricking original stories, some interesting camera work, and some interesting extras and actors. Every extra/actor is so fricking cookie cutter and clean these days.

There are good movies being released for sure these days, but the days of going to a Cineplex to catch a random film that happens to be a 7.5/10 thriller/action with great action, fun actors, witty side characters and a packed theater is gone. Seeing EEAAO at the IMAX screenings they did with packed theaters before it released wide was so much fun. It seems like nothing can draw a crowd anymore, and the stuff that does draw a crowd I have absolutely no interest in seeing.

I was born in 1990 but I'm pretty sure it's not nostalgia bias. The 90s era films had infinitely more quality and originality than anything in the last 20 years. I'm doing my best writing specs for a renaissance back to the good times, but I don't know if it's possible. Every actor worth a shit is nearing 70 years old anyway. There aren't any more Bruce Willis, Sam Jacksons or Chris Walkens coming through that door in the zoomer tiktok age.

We know it's trash because the topics are so benign. South Park is a good example. It used to actually attack power structures now it won't go after woke leftists at all who are the dominant cultural force. So they went from attacking tptb to just simping for them. That's why it's garbage because it's not funny at all and not taking any risks. Basically snivelling grovelling garbage

      Tldr

Stories or narratives are a way to understand the world and only really serve kids. Once you're an adult you have your own life course so don't really need these narrative tools to understand how to deal with the world and shit anymore.

Definitely true in some sense. Most stories are just how we communicate our external experiences to our in groups.

Adults also get caught up in nonsense ideologies that obscure their understanding of the world. At least children have the wisdom of trusting their direct experience.

I would say its more a result of the purpose of stories as nothing more than lessons to teach youngsters how to become adults, and once you are an adult, you no longer need to hear these storis

The biological purpose of a story is to teach young humans about things they may encounter in life, the first stories ever told were likely mammoth hunting stories that taught very primitive tactics skill luck ect.

As humans developed and evolved and formed civilisations so too did the stories, which started to include non-fiction for the purpose of preparing youth for unexpected events which were a far more common occourence when the world was uncharted

Its only over millennia that concepts like 'fun' and 'hero of the story' and 'evil' started existing. We already know this as you look back on ancient stories like Gilgamesh and you can see how primitive the story is

In the modern world yes we still use movies shows books to tell stories about life and make our children wise, but to be completely honest, once you get past the age of 30 you will just lose all interest in these things, you're all read up and wise and nothing is fun or challenging or exciting anymore, you watch a movie and it just feels like 10 other movies you've watched before melded into a new one

I am not very good at explaining things but I hope maybe someone here understands my point of view and maybe agrees or disagrees with me

      >teach youngsters how to become adults
Greeks thought plays contained essential lessons on the nature of morals and virtue, and all adult males were required to attend.

I do agree that once you're "dad age" you want to start imparting your own wisdom instead of getting bashed over the head with others'. However, reconizing that a large number of your peers are also idiots, dad-age-you still wants your audience to be everybody, not just the youth.

Also young writers lacking in life experience - even when technically skilled - all produce cringe, since "write what you know" only encompasses teenage love and wage-cucking.

49 year old here, I made it 17 minutes into that new South Park movie before I punched out without a single smile or chuckle.
I stopped watching South park when that PC principal shit happened, it was going downhill but man, it happened all at once.

The same with Sunny in Philly when they started hiring women writers and that Sweet Dee does the Wade Boggs beer challenge and used a bunch of cringe Alt Right lingo to own the chuds or something.
This new Obi Wan show is pitiful, looks worse than a Sci Fy channel production, it looks worse and has worse acting than Startgate Atlantis. I can't believe the pulled the RACIST card out for the Turd Sister, who can't act. The little israeli goblin Princess Leai is the worst child actor I've seen in years.

The Watchmen show was pure cringe, the PEACEKEEPER show with roided out Cena was pure cringe, everything is so terrible now.

The last good thing I saw was THE PATRIOT and MR IN BETWEEN. Everything is so bad now it's like an actual propaganda attack on people's minds.

Neither. The problem is how the media is pushed. There are probably a bunch of great series and films that you will never watch because they aren't marketed as much as the average capeshit pooped out once in a while. Its mostly about companies settling for stablished things for easy cash. And since big ass companies have huge marketing campaings their overshadow the good films released.

Both. Media has been on a downwards trend for a while, especially since 2007. It's only gotten steadily worse since then.

    BUT you've changed too.

When you were a kid there were let's say a 1000 pieces of media in the decade you grew up in, 400 were good 600 were shit. You as a kid didn't care about whether something was good or shit though, you didn't care about writing mechanics or political commentary or authorial intent or anything like that, you just wanted pretty pictures and sounds that projected a vague idea of comfortable fun into your room. That's all you needed. You were far more easily satisfied, you remembered mostly the really good ones. You'll even remember some of the bad ones fondly nowadays due to childhood nostalgia. So to your mind there are approximately 300 good and maybe 200 shit pieces of media, even though the real ratio is 400-600.

Fast forward to this decade. A 1000 pieces of media came out, 250 were good 750 were shit. But you constantly fret over the most critical merits only autists like Roger Ebert would care about before, over whether the writer can endlessly avoid a never ending barrage of nitpicking, over how much political pandering is inserted into the story, over whether the message is something you find valid, over whether it's "dishonest cinematography" or if it's "hacky" or if it sends the franchise into a creative direction or if it's too similar to other shit etc, you've essentially became a perfectionist grouch and for some reason nobody wants to admit this.
All the bad piece of media are now remembered and talked about nonstop in your generation due to information obesity, and now you're now so burned out by how politics have been weaponized that even when a good show comes out, you'll likely dismiss it because you'll see a woman or a Black person in it. So to your mind there are approximately 30 good shows and 970 bad ones, but the real ratio is 250-750.

Media has worsened, but you've become harder to please too.
