Are you excited for Romulus yet?

As long as we get a strong, independent, BIPOC, non-heterosexual, birthing person identifying main character I'll be happy.

I'm so bored of female protagonists in alien. It just signals a lack of interest in telling an authentic original story and instead just riding on tropes of the series.

That's the only story this universe can tell, I think.
The whole original story is literally the "actually it was the woman who was a strong survivor" which is relevant in the context of 1970s rape culture but not today.
It's like a mini-genre whose time has come and gone.

Frankenstein was written by Mary Wolstonecraft Shelley or however you spell that b***hes name. She was pregnant at the time and a lot of the themes of Frankenstein revolve around the horrors of maternal creation. The literary links between Alien and Frankenstein are pretty obvious and I'm nowhere close to the first person to connect those dots. Might be some good stuff here:

It doesn't preclude a male protagonist but it's easier to explore motherhood with a female protagonist than a male one. The female MC, Ripley or otherwise, does something akin to giving birth in all but one of the Alien movies; now imagine how much less effective this would be with a male MC. Unless you're in the "pregnant people" camp and want men to be included in the "people to give birth" category of wokies.

Did you just ask him to think for himself and reply to you with an actual thought instead of linking random bullshit?

    Hella excited here.

    >Lastly, you just touched on the Weyland-Yutani spaceship that your team built, but overall, how did you balance practical effects and VFX?

    >For the creatures, we brought in all the guys from Aliens. They were in their early twenties when they made Aliens, and they were a part of Stan Winston’s [special effects] team. And now we had them at the top of their game. They have their own shops, and so we brought them all together to work on all the creatures, because we went with all animatronics and puppets at every level. I even got the chance to be under the table with them, puppeteering all these animatronics.

    >I have this obsession with no green screens, so we built every creature and set. Everything had to be built so we were really living and breathing in these spaces. But I’m not an anti-CG guy. I got the chance to do Evil Dead, because I had made this short movie called Panic Attack! with a couple of friends and we did all the CG. So I come from a background where I know how to build the effects myself. I still do VFX shots in my movies to this day. I’ll cut and do VFX shots on my computer, sometimes. So it’s just whatever is best for the shot, and when it comes to face-to-face encounters and moments with creatures, nothing beats the real thing.

    >For the sets, we built spaceships and we built miniatures. We went back to all of that. And then we figured out ways to marry it with the CG world. There’s some things that only CG can do for the scope and movement. So it really has to be the right tool for the shot. Ideally, you should never feel like you’re watching CG. Ideally, there should be nothing there where the audience goes, “Well, that was clearly CG.” It should always feel practical, but I prefer practical because I want to see it when I’m there [on set]. There is nothing worse than having nothing to look at when I’m shooting. But some things that are CG can really blow your mind when done right.

      >Ridley watched [Alien: Romulus] after I had just finished the director’s cut, and there was no VFX on the director’s cut. There was no time to make any. But he still had the whole experience. There was nothing missing. You know what I mean? So take it that way. You can watch it without VFX, and you’ll know exactly what’s going on. You won’t miss it much. That is a fact.

        EVERYTHING IS CANON

        >So Alien: Romulus takes place between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), but it’s reportedly “unconnected” to those films. Is that correct?

        >That’s not correct, but it does take place between the two movies. The way we crafted it is if you haven’t seen any of them, I’m jealous because you’ll have an incredible experience. You’ll have all these worlds of Alien coming at you, and you’ve never experienced any of this. You don’t know how the creature is born, and you don’t know any of these things. That’s fantastic. You’ll have a blast.

        >Now, if you’ve seen the others, then it’s a completely different experience in a way, because you’ll see and you’ll find those connections with the other movies. And if you’re a fan, you’ll be that person who annoys your friends in the theater, by telling them that you know what this is from and where that gun is from and what the characters are talking about.

        >So it is crafted in that way, and hopefully it works that way for everybody, but it is connected to all of them. I love all of those movies. I didn’t want to omit or ignore any of them when it comes to connections at a story level, character level, technology level and creature level. There’s always connections from Alien to Alien: Covenant.

Not to mention they tend to lie.

They say “we’re using practical effects!” and then cover up the practical effects with CGi to “”””enhance””” them. Like how the FNAF movie had practical puppets but they used CGI on the full making it look ugly.

Not to mention that digital cameras just make everything look CGI.

Remember The Thing reboot where they did practical effects and then just cut them all out of the movie and replaced them with CGI anyways? lmao

As much as people like to shit on the Alien sequels atleast they attempted a new aesthetic with each movie. Alien 3 and Prometheus have completely different art styles. This looks exactly like the first Alien again. This is just a studio trying to make a low budget horror movie using the Alien license.

      Anonymous

      >a low budget horror movie using the Alien license.

Dude, its IN SPACE. So they had to do a lot of graphics, its anything but cheap. If they really wanted to do cheap shit, they would just make something like "Aliens invade some rural town in USA and kill everyone in the darkness". So they wouldn't have to do any of the sets, just film it in some rural shithole in USA.

Oh, wait, they already done this shit, it was called Alien vs Predator 2

        Anonymous

        >So they had to do a lot of graphics, its anything but cheap.
        >graphics
        This isn't /vg/, and no, they didn't:

      >This is just a studio trying to make a low budget horror movie using the Alien license.
This is Fede's idea all along.

      >Were you asked to pitch what became Alien: Romulus? Or did you ask if you could come in and pitch it?

      >Right after Don’t Breathe, I had a meeting at Scott Free, Ridley’s company, and I think they were about to start doing Alien: Covenant. And I mentioned something that I would love to see. I said, “I hope this movie has some of this and that and this.” And he was like, “Oh, that’s interesting. What would you do with it?” No one was actually asking me [to pitch], believe me; it was more that they were intrigued about what I wanted to see as a fan. And I was like, “I think you guys should do this and approach it this way, and maybe it’s about that.” And suddenly, I was pitching, but I was not really being asked to do it. So that stayed in the air there somehow, and then a couple of years later, Ridley remembered that. He knew about it. He was like, “Fede had pitched this thing.” So they called me back and said, “Hey, remember that story you mentioned? Do you want to write it and direct it?” And I was like, “Frick yeah!” And here we are.

There's nothing wrong with low budget horror starring an alien. In fact that's the basis of the original movie. Having CRT screens on anything made after current year is a ridiculous idea. CRTs are heavier, use more power, less definition, etc. There's literally no reason to have a tube TV on a space station 200 years from now.

    Calley Spazney is Amanda Ripley.
The xenomorph from the original survived, negating the tribulations and triumph of Ellen, and the company found it floating in Space. The company extracted black goo from the xenomorph and made a new one.
Fede got inspiration from "is this another bug hunt" in Aliens neglecting the fact that it's explicitly stated it's something they've never seen before.

        Anonymous

No. It was destroyed. That was her victory. And for 57 years afterwards, no other alien was seen. Suddenly pretending like there were actually dozens and dozens of secret encounters with xenomorphs during those decades negates everything and makes the alien universe moronic.

I don't think the prequels are as bad as people say they are, but will happily admit they aren't amazing films. The black goo, Engineers and potential other alien nasties gives you a shit ton more to work when writing stories. If you ever get the chance, read the Alien RPG and its supplementary material. It's got some really good stories using material from the prequels.

Making the engineers human-looking albinos was the most boring idea ever.

Making the engineers create humanity and angry at human for killing space jesus and wanting to live forever was also a bad idea.

Engineers didn't need explaining tbh, not like 35 years later. When it's been that long, it's best to let a mystery remain unexplained, because no matter what you think of, it's not going to be good enough to satisfy anyone who actually cared about it. And they didn't think of anything good either, it was a boring and cynical explanation that turned the Engis into a civilization of seething jobbers.

Aren't her efforts in vain in literally every movie? She didn't save anyone from the Alien in the first film, she saved herself. Maybe if this was Alien 3, where Newt and Hicks and Bishop die, but the mere concept of an Alien sequel essentially proves her efforts in vain since she never definitively defeated them.

No, you moron, she was never trying to destroy all of them in the first movie. She killed the one on the shuttle, that's it. There was still a ship with eggs on the planet, and she dealt with it in the sequel. Pay attention next time, doofus.
