Should I stop at season 3? Does Netflix really ruin the show?
I already felt that season 3 was downgraded over the previous seasons.

I think the re-edited Season 4 is at best "kind of okay," season 5 is a massive nose dive that is hindered by a bunch of nonsense like Portia de Rossi quitting acting and because of that Lindsay is barely in it(and in most of her scenes, she is covered by something to hide that she isn't there). There are some funny moments in both seasons, but Season 5 ruins a lot of shit about the show.

Not to mention the 180 on George Michael and Maev.

I mean it's not a bad place to drop it. I would personally finish it. I'll say this though, I don't agree with this anon at all I don't think the re-edited season 4 is worth your time, basically what that re-edit is, is their attempt to make the show more like the old seasons in the editing room, and that wasn't how it was shot, nor how it was written so the entire thing is a massive shitshow that relies even more heavily on narration than the original 4th season did, so please do not watch the Season 4 Remix "Fateful Consequences", just watch the original.

Thing about the 4th season is that a lot of the material is genuinely fantastic, it's a very ambitious project that you could tell the writers put a lot of work into, due to production schedules however it is a bit messy in spots, and in others its great. I still maintain that season 4 in terms of writing has a lot of moments that is better than season 3 was, or at least rivals it. I like that season despite its flaws, so I say watch it but make sure you watch the ORIGINAL cut, which if you're on netflix is in the trailers section.

The re edited season 4 is more painful to watch tbh

The re-edit doesn't work if Ron Howard never shuts the frick up

Even in seasons 1-3, it seems like he never shuts up. I didn't think so at first, but I grew to hate him after multiple rewatches.

yes. My experience with season 4 made me question why I liked the show in the first place, so don't go there and ruin it.

stop at season 3 then re-watch it every year or so, probably the best show made when it comes to rewatchability

Hello darkness is the only slightly funny part of season 4, you can just watch his shit on YouTube though. Season 3 finale is the true ending for the series.

I didn't care for season 4 when I first watched it, but I liked it when I rewatched it. Season 5, however, is complete dogshit.

The show was already on a decline bringing a cancelled show back rarely works out

Right? I don't know why, but season 1 and 2 have solid writing, they are jammed with jokes, but season 3 feels like it is a parody of itself. They devoted half of the season to British shit, which didn't really work.

if your time is valuable, skip 4 and 5. if you're a neet, then continue watching. there are one or two gags that aren't terrible.

I'll never watch season 4. Once you lose your innocence, it cannot be regained.

    Yes, stop at season 3.

I've watched both versions of Season 4, and they're both bad. It was before Netflix had the budget it later got, so the actors each only filmed their stuff when they had time. This made for each episode being focused on a single character. This is great for Gob's episode and Tobia's episode, but then you realize you have to watch an entire episode about Maeby or Lindsey. In other words, very VERY hit or miss, but in general the writing isn't super great. Real 5/10 season, with a few highlights.

The recut is a little better for pacing, but again, every character's plot/story is completely disconnected from all the others, so you tonal whiplash and the plot becomes very hard to follow. But not too much worse than the original, just different.

Only watched the first half of Season 5, and holy frick was it bad. Just terrible. It was like Zombie Simpsons level Flanderization with a strange convoluted plot about Lindsey running for office or something. It was so bad, they delayed reason the second half of Season 5, then I think just quietly dropped it when no one was looking. Never even heard when it came out.

TL:DR: Stop after 3, maybe watch the episodes based on the characters you like in Season 4, but really you're better off stopping after 3

      >an entire episode about Maeby
Maeby's episode was actually really solid though,
Weakest season 4 eps are the George Sr and Lindsey ones. Gob easily has the best, Tobias and George-Michael eps were also good

Why does it get worse with every rewatch? I'm starting to think it never really was good.

        Entire series.

4 is weird because of the formatting (character-centric episodes) but once the plot starts coming together it's as intrincate and well thought-out as anything in season 2. Also has some of the best jokes in the whole series.

Obviously the show takes a great hit from everyone suddenly being older, the cast not being together that much (though there's plenty of new characters in everyone's story, but obviously you want the chemistry of Gob and Michael, or Tobias and Michael, etc, which is there but in really small quantities.)

So yeah, I don't know. Season 2 is definitely the peak of the series. Half of season 3 is up there, (even if the second half with all the in-jokes about getting cancelled wasn't as good.) You don't lose anything by skipping 4 and 5, but you don't HAVE to watch them.

The original season 4 is a rough start, but due to the way everything is set up really clicks in episode 4 and has amazing callbacks and jokes. The problem is that it is very obvious that the actors are by themselves and any scene with two of them has very awkward shot reverse shot. The recut completely trashes everything good about season 4 and makes the shot reverse shot stuff even more noticeable. It completely ruins all the jokes just for the sake of telling the story in a linear manner, which just makes it a straight up soap opera instead of a parody of a soap opera.

Yeah I genuinely for the life of me cannot understand why anybody would recommend the remix or even watch it. It is such a tragedy that netflix hides the original fricking version in favor of this shit.

Season 4 was never going to be like the old show, literally was not written to be like the old show, or filmed like it. So why does anybody think its a good idea to take all that material to try and frankenstein it into some abomination attempting to resemble the old show? It's fricking sad that people watch that instead of the real 4th season, which is flawed but still worthwhile.

Yeah I wanted to like season 4 but it's really not good. Even the ordinary shots the actors are green screened in. Just end it at 3.

one of my favorite jokes was in season 4, but overall I wouldn't watch it.

Tobias gets a license plate for a New start "ANuStart" couple episodes later he sees Lucille and she greets him "Hello, Anus Tart" the narrator then says "She hadn't seen the license plate"

I like season 4 and I think it is worth watching. (Original cut)

Season 5 is not good, call out the flaws of 4 all you want but 4 still felt ambitious and layered like the original show, 5 is the first season where it legitimately feels like a mediocre sitcom, its just not worth it.

4 is one of the most ambitious things in TV history. Trying to create a coherent weaving of 9 characters that can be watched in any order (as long as you never watch a character's subsequent episode before their previous episodes) is amazingly unique and ambitious. Many of the reveals were cool. It just wasn't that funny.

It wasn't as funny as season 1 and 2, but still very funny imo. Way funnier than your standard sitcom would be
a lot of the jokes are funnier than anything from season 3

If you watch Season 4 make sure to watch the original cut, re-edited one sucks.

Season 5 is pretty bad, but it entertained me in how mean spirited it was. Like AD is a show where bad things are constantly happening to its characters, but in Season 5 I like genuinely felt bad for some of them. It was just like kind of absurd.
