how about some media literacy? that's the point of the movie. he glorified the mafia and all he got out of it was some petty achievements, paranoid anxiety, and miserable friends.

      everyone needs a hobby

lol yes and by the end, the distain in his voice as he picks up the newspaper, living like in a prison, well deserved.
it must have taken some time and build-up to leave that blood paradise. paying off police, judges, wittnesses, without being known or interrupted. pretty much like god moving freely, doing whatever you please, and the best of it is the lavish food and the loyality from the family.
This sense of belonging, security and social vandalism might be the greatest high on power one can get, which then exchanging it for paying taxes, visibility, confinement. Take that, their lowest is everyones highest haha.

i think I did enough repetitive trials for a movie, that i watched once and I do not intend a second round. that script over-rides my interest thats on the surface and the way it goes, does not reach a deeper layer.

generally speaking, i suggest to let go of this thread and move it to a place thats better suited for.

Why did the Italian American mafia fell off hard? The Yakuza and Cartels make billions annually. Atleast the Yakuza runs legitimate corporations.

RICO and wire taps exposed that omerta was a joke and that basically everyone flips once faced with 20+ years. Also, the Yakuza have fallen off ever harder imo. Cartels are dominating because they operate in complete shithole countries (or even borderline failed states like Mexico) where they are completely entrenched in all state organizations. Say what you want about the US but the president of the country getting a 100 million dollar bribe from the most powerful crime boss just isn't going to happen nowadays meanwhile it literally did in Mexico

What're the chances of being able to ask the don or your capo or whatever if you can retire early with modest allowance after getting out for taking the fall? or are you stuck with this shit:

RICO act quite literally fricked organised crime up the ass, used to be that dons were untouchable unless caught in the act but with RICO if you can get one street level wop to flip you can bury the boss under the jail with minimal hassle.

Do people really come away from Goodfellas thinking this? I mean, people who consider themselves intelligent and into movies. This is as bad as the people who take the Wolf of Wall Street at face value.

Pretty much every single character is scum, and the movie makes it clear. Although Henry being remorseful about people dying seems like an attempt at sugarcoating

It doesn't glorify them, it simply shows the fun side of their lifestyle. It also condemns them by showing that they're psychopathic morons with no friends, no loyalty, and no future.
