I liked both for different reasons. Colon Movie was more in style with Aqua Teen, but can be a bit of a slog to watch at times. Plantasm was better structurally and I liked the original characters, but it feels a bit off for an Aqua Teen film. Neither are as funny as an episode of the show imo.
i actually really enjoyed seeing the aqua teens in a more "coherent" story structure. maybe it's not quite like the show but i was watching an interview with dana snyder (shake's VA) and he was basically saying as long as you have likable characters you can watch them doing literally anything and it's still fun
this is what people always miss about Colon, a lot of the enjoyment is frontloaded because they just didn't know how to pace out the Aqua Teen experience to over 60 minutes.
I've been thinking about how you'd make plantasm into a regular episode >Cut mooninites, Elmer, keep only one slave race, cut all other humans >Frylock gets job as personal assistant to Neil to pay bills >Keep neil manlet, focus harder on 'muh environment', have him task frylock with making 'eco sustainable work force' >goes home, talks about new job to Carl who mention's how the factory workers are practically slaves, which pulls meatwad out, and how he's going to unionize to collect dues, which pulls shake >Goes back next day, other 3 in tow, he goes inside to lab, they immediately start breaking windows where employees are still sleeping telling them the benefits of the union >Neil talks to frylock about how awful it is to be short, frylock mutters about how being richest man on the planet sort of makes up for it, banters, mentions the plants will be ready by tonight >interrupted by big alert about how productivity is dropping, uses window to show meatwad and carl talking to workers while shake is stealing shit off the line, workers defenestrate a scab >Neil comes out and tells them they're all fired, he won't be needing them, and they all have till tomorrow to get their homes out of his parking lot >goes outside to show Carl has a pallet of bricks, is selling them for the low price of union membership >goes back inside to lab, shows the first plant workers sprouting instantly from water, neil immediately shoves frylock aside and eats seeds to grow into plantman >frylock asks about saving the planet, living ecologically, neil brushes him off saying yes its about all those things but its also about being the height he so deserves >interrupted by riot noises from line, neil steps out to disperse crowd of ex-employees who busted in, neil talks about how big he is now, frylock says he's also 80% eucalyptus and highly flammable >immediately combusts >cuts to outside, carl drives off with money, banter, shake gets beaten by plant employees for theft >outro
I watched this movie with a friend last night and for the most part it was just total silence. There's a few good jokes in there but it was really awkward to watch with some jokes just being kind of bad.
Did they just burn out on the writing department when they made the shorts leading up to the movie? Was it meant to be more of a story driven thing than a comedy? The whole thing just felt really weird.
Some parts were better but others were worse. Colon Movie was also just something else alongside the main series while Plantasm was the big return of the Aqua Teens, so a lot of the joy was seeing the characters again
I cannot believe the same people that wrote the new movie wrote the dora episode where she eats out of a dog bowl while getting railed by virgins.

the only part i laughed at was meatwad talking about foot cancer and it was already in the trailer
