I just think it makes more sense character wise. I just don't buy that Zuko and Mai had this unspoken romance between them which they fostered since they were kids, Zuko's never been shown to be sentimental about women and Mai doesn't give a shit about anything. What I can see is Ty Lee making a pass at Zuko (because she's Ty Lee) and Zuko just kinda going along with it as a way of running away from his inner turmoil. It'd also the reinforce the idea that every bit of love Zuko received while he played the perfect prince his father wanted was surface-level and hollow. It's then when you'd reveal that Ty Lee actually did have sincere feelings for Zuko and tries her best to coax him back while at the Boiling Rock, something which blindsides Zuko entirely. Then you have the subsequent heel-turn which in turn motivates Mai betray Azula to save the only real friend she ever had. Mai worked best when she was a foil to more colorful proactive personalities (like Azula and Ty Lee) and she just does not have any interesting interplay with Zuko because they're both kinda moody downers. Minimizing her role would unironically be the best thing for her, less is sometimes more.

Mai's standing up to Zuko when he's lashing out is a major element in his arc. Mai's personality is necessary for him to realize that his anger and unhappiness are due to intractable moral qualms, not just a sense of being out-of-place after 3 years of exile. Zuko didn't understand his own point of view, and if Mai did, the arc of him figuring it out would have been thrown loose.

These would work quite well. Hell, the idea that Zuko doesn't just know, but can reference everything she's talking about with complete understanding and acceptance from both specific experiences and general world travel help sell the idea that going and meeting new people will make you a better person even if you don't plan on it or want to be.
It also sells that Zuko is on the same path to wisdom and spiritual understanding Iroh was on, he's just being a moody teenager about it. Also would solidify his quick friendship with Aang after switching side.

That's actually a pretty legitimate point, it's a weird line when Mai had always been like 'Try me, Sis' when talking to Azula so far.
Make her more representative of the things wrong with the Fire Nation. Azula is obviously evil, that's her role and fine. But thinking back to one line in particular, her hanging with Zuko and offering to go torture the servants, should be a huge red flag for him. He's been a servant, he's been a tea waiter and been at the behest of powerful people before. Azula can be the obvious evil, but make Mai the spoiled girl who represents the subtle things people take for granted, genuine privilege that Zuko thought he wanted and expected but realizes he hates.

Otherwise, she has all the ingredients to be a beloved dour goth waifu, but they don't quite go hard enough. Give her some dark lipstick and some eyeliner and she'd absolutely have a cult.

Mai is a really weak character. And very flat too. People like the cynical “I hate everyone and everything” emo thing she has with Zuko, but this is a poor understanding of Zuko’s character. Mai’s worldview makes him feel terrible. Zuko is a very passionate person who feels his emotions powerfully and sincerely. Someone like Mai who refuses to engage with her emotions js the exact opposite of someone who he should be with. His morher abandoned him and then Mai is distant or neglectful or leaves him? Bad combo.
Ty Lee is the only one who really matches Zuko on an emotional wavelength. Even Azula understands Zuko and his emotions better.
Anyway Mai’s problem is just that she is…super bland and mediocre? She’s the least interesting or relevant of Ozai’s Angels, yet she gets paired with Zuko. She’s fairly flat and one note, and she’s also really passive and without much internal depth. There’s not much you can do with her emotionally since she doesn’t have much depth and isn’t expressive, and she can’t really drive plots forward since she’s so passive. Shes associated with Zuko but she just drags him down. On a meta level he is just too good as a character to he with her; she’s so bland. Being tied to Zuko highlights Mai’s flaws and weaknesses as a character but if she was just by herself she’d be more tolerable, and honestly making her and Ty Lee a thing would probably fix her
I prefer Ty Lee with Zuko. But if Zuko can’t be with Mai then she lacks strong relationships and the only one that makes sense is Ty Lee, who she’s associated as paired up the most with.

Another point a forgot to mention is that Ty Lee had practically already completed the exact same character arc Zuko went through. She too spent a great deal of her life away from her life of prestige and privilege in the Fire Nation and was perfectly happy living as a lowly circus performer before Azula put a knife to her back. It'd make way more sense for her to throw it all away chasing something (or in this case someone) more real than it does for Mai because Ty Lee had already done it once.
Yeah Zuko and Ty Lee have the most parallels, Ty Lee is the only one who had an arc of positive improvement and claiming her own identity. That and her natural goodness and femininity made her the best pair with Zuko. Compared to Azula who is at best autistic and at worst an actual psychopath, and Mai who is so emotionally distant it made Zuko lose his temper multiple times, Ty Lee was the only one on the beach who understood Zuko, tried to when she didn’t, and didn’t use this to either talk down on him (Mai) or manipulate him (Azula)

It's symbolic of him learning the plight of the common man, and serving the publuc rather than him ruming over them. He does not hate serving others because it's below him, he does it as a duty to his people.
I think it's more accurate to say the fever had allowed him to come to terms with it. He wasn't just trying to please Iroh. But all the same he was destined for more and that's why it was so easy for Azula to reel him back in.

This is not what I meant to imply, simply that Ty Lee had reached something of her own brand of spiritual enlightenment away from the confines of Fire Nation aristocracy. Not unlike how Iroh had later in his life, of course it's much more superficial, even if she was threatened she does still go along with Azula and gleefully hunts down the Avatar like a dog alongside her. So she's not completely there yet, but the seeds have been planted in a way that they just weren't for someone like Mai.
While I'd agree that their relationship isn't super well developed, I think it's a good concept. In theory, it gives Zuko's treachery a bit more weight, since otherwise he's just betraying his obviously evil father and sister. Mai is a force pulling him to remain with the Fire Nation that isn't actively malicious like his family. At the same time, though, Mai's own emotional repression and her association with Azula prevents Zuko from fully opening up to her. There's a barrier between them and all that can get through the barrier is "safe" stuff that goes under Azula's radar (i.e. them being emo together).
Ty Lee certainly would've been more emotionally available than Mai, but Zuko would've pretty much been in the same position. I don't think Ty Lee and Zuko have significantly better chemistry either, but that's just my opinion.
If they had more time, I think Mai escaping the prison with Zuko and the two of them finally getting a chance to be open with one another without Azula's specter hanging over them would've really allowed the relationship to properly stand up on its own feet. As it is, the emotional arc is obvious, but not actually completed onscreen. And then the comics fricked it to death, but it's best to just ignore that bullshit.
Agreed on all counts, anon. Mai is necessary to give Zuko's return to the FN and subsequent choice to leave again weight; if there's nothing there he enjoys then there's no emotional stakes.
I'd like to add that Mai's brooding personality does have chemistry with Zuko, since it's much the same attitude he has throughout season 1 and the first half of season 3. They both know on some level things are bullshit, but they can't say that, so they lash out at available targets. But Zuko got opportunities to voice his broader dissatisfaction with the way things are, while it's left to assumption whether Mai's complaints represent a suppressed awareness of the wider problems or not.
I also maintain that Mai is best girl, but I acknowledge that's just my personal taste.

Like they never really have any major developments or anything, she just feels like a flat Wednesday Addams knock off. Yeah. It's actually pretty decent on the $5 tier after adjusting the settings and doing multiple "takes" for a variety of emphasis and tone in the voice. I've been messing around with it in my spare time with avatar voices and mostly doing lewd voice work.
Have a bonus audio file. Some of Azula's lines aren't super consistent, but getting consistency out of 11ai is challenging. I took some liberties with the layout due to the AI not interpreting text in a way that sounds very good.

Again just a rumor, but it's the classic "big ask" so that you start with more than you want, but can look like you're being cooperative with dialing it back to what you actually wanted in the first place. I think it would have been nice if we got to see Mai and/or Ty Lee alone a couple times. They were always with Azula or Zuko, so it's kind of hard to know how they think or feel outside of their relation to those two. The beach episode was good, but for Zuko it came after 2 and a half seasons of buildup for his character and his frustrations, which the girls never got.
I get it, they're secondary characters so they can't have the same level of focus that Zuko got, but I still think they should have gotten a couple more scenes to themselves as setup. Seeing them explore Ba-Sing-Se without Azula hovering over them would have been good.
It's been a while since I last watched the show, but I don't remember Ty Lee having a crush on Zuko. At least not any more than she has a crush on everyone, being as it's Ty Lee.
The impression I got is they were childhood friends, and Ty Lee was put out by how tense and judgemental Zuko had become.
I feel like she just needed one more episode to empasize her potential qualms with following Azula and/or showing that she actually has a positive relationship with Ty Lee.

Mai's standing up to Zuko when he's lashing out is a major element in his arc. Mai's personality is necessary for him to realize that his anger and unhappiness are due to intractable moral qualms, not just a sense of being out-of-place after 3 years of exile. Zuko didn't understand his own point of view, and if Mai did, the arc of him figuring it out would have been thrown loose.

I just don't buy that Zuko and Mai had this unspoken romance between them which they fostered since they were kids, Zuko's never been shown to be sentimental about women and Mai doesn't give a shit about anything. What I can see is Ty Lee making a pass at Zuko (because she's Ty Lee) and Zuko just kinda going along with it as a way of running away from his inner turmoil. It'd also the reinforce the idea that every bit of love Zuko received while he played the perfect prince his father wanted was surface-level and hollow. It's then when you'd reveal that Ty Lee actually did have sincere feelings for Zuko and tries her best to coax him back while at the Boiling Rock, something which blindsides Zuko entirely. Then you have the subsequent heel-turn which in turn motivates Mai betray Azula to save the only real friend she ever had. Mai worked best when she was a foil to more colorful proactive personalities (like Azula and Ty Lee) and she just does not have any interesting interplay with Zuko because they're both kinda moody downers. Minimizing her role would unironically be the best thing for her, less is sometimes more.

The 'I DO know you' scene would have been a perfect set up for that.
These would work quite well. Hell, the idea that Zuko doesn't just know, but can reference everything she's talking about with complete understanding and acceptance from both specific experiences and general world travel help sell the idea that going and meeting new people will make you a better person even if you don't plan on it or want to be.
It also sells that Zuko is on the same path to wisdom and spiritual understanding Iroh was on, he's just being a moody teenager about it. Also would solidify his quick friendship with Aang after switching side.
That would have been interesting, like say a scene where Aang is talking about air bender culture or spirit flow the rest listen Sokka probably zones out half way through, Toph was never really paying attention, and Katara is the only one who’s paying attention. But thinking back to one line in particular, her hanging with Zuko and offering to go torture the servants, should be a huge red flag for him. Azula can be the obvious evil, but make Mai the spoiled girl who represents the subtle things people take for granted, genuine privilege that Zuko thought he wanted and expected but realizes he hates.

I honestly wouldn't, I'd have it be another thing that points to him rejecting her, his father, and the fire nation he once was so proud of. The other anons bring up him with Ty Lee, so him either switching or just never having been with Mai (maybe they were edgy emo kids together?) works.

Ty Lee is the only one who really matches Zuko on an emotional wavelength. Even Azula understands Zuko and his emotions better.
Anyway Mai’s problem is just that she is…super bland and mediocre? She’s the least interesting or relevant of Ozai’s Angels, yet she gets paired with Zuko. She’s fairly flat and one note, and she’s also really passive and without much internal depth. There’s not much you can do with her emotionally since she doesn’t have much depth and isn’t expressive, and she can’t really drive plots forward since she’s so passive. Shes associated with Zuko but she just drags him down. On a meta level he is just too good as a character to he with her; she’s so bland. Being tied to Zuko highlights Mai’s flaws and weaknesses as a character but if she was just by herself she’d be more tolerable, and honestly making her and Ty Lee a thing would probably fix her

Another point a forgot to mention is that Ty Lee had practically already completed the exact same character arc Zuko went through. She too spent a great deal of her life away from her life of prestige and privilege in the Fire Nation and was perfectly happy living as a lowly circus performer before Azula put a knife to her back. It's symbolic of him learning the plight of the common man, and serving the publuc rather than him ruming over them. He does not hate serving others because it's below him, he does it as a duty to his people.
I think it's more accurate to say the fever had allowed him to come to terms with it. He wasn't just trying to please Iroh. But all the same he was destined for more and that's why it was so easy for Azula to reel him back in.
Zuko hated it until he had a spirit fever that resolved he'd rather be a Tea Boy than continue on the futile path he was on. It's only when Azula came back offering what he thought was impossible did he throw it away.

This is not what I meant to imply, simply that Ty Lee had reached something of her own brand of spiritual enlightenment away from the confines of Fire Nation aristocracy. Not unlike how Iroh had later in his life, of course it's much more superficial, even if she was threatened she does still go along with Azula and gleefully hunts down the Avatar like a dog alongside her. So she's not completely there yet, but the seeds have been planted in a way that they just weren't for someone like Mai.
While I'd agree that their relationship isn't super well developed, I think it's a good concept. In theory, it gives Zuko's treachery a bit more weight, since otherwise he's just betraying his obviously evil father and sister. Mai is a force pulling him to remain with the Fire Nation that isn't actively malicious like his family. At the same time, though, Mai's own emotional repression and her association with Azula prevents Zuko from fully opening up to her. There's a barrier between them and all that can get through the barrier is "safe" stuff that goes under Azula's radar (i.e. them being emo together).
Ty Lee certainly would've been more emotionally available than Mai, but Zuko would've pretty much been in the same position. I don't think Ty Lee and Zuko have significantly better chemistry either, but that's just my opinion.
If they had more time, I think Mai escaping the prison with Zuko and the two of them finally getting a chance to be open with one another without Azula's specter hanging over them would've really allowed the relationship to properly stand up on its own feet. As it is, the emotional arc is obvious, but not actually completed onscreen. And then the comics fricked it to death, but it's best to just ignore that bullshit.
Agreed on all counts, anon. Mai is necessary to give Zuko's return to the FN and subsequent choice to leave again weight; if there's nothing there he enjoys then there's no emotional stakes.
I'd like to add that Mai's brooding personality does have chemistry with Zuko, since it's much the same attitude he has throughout season 1 and the first half of season 3. They both know on some level things are bullshit, but they can't say that, so they lash out at available targets. But Zuko got opportunities to voice his broader dissatisfaction with the way things are, while it's left to assumption whether Mai's complaints represent a suppressed awareness of the wider problems or not.
I also maintain that Mai is best girl, but I acknowledge that's just my personal taste.

I think it would have been nice if we got to see Mai and/or Ty Lee alone a couple times. They were always with Azula or Zuko, so it's kind of hard to know how they think or feel outside of their relation to those two. The beach episode was good, but for Zuko it came after 2 and a half seasons of buildup for his character and his frustrations, which the girls never got.
I get it, they're secondary characters so they can't have the same level of focus that Zuko got, but I still think they should have gotten a couple more scenes to themselves as setup. Seeing them explore Ba-Sing-Se without Azula hovering over them would have been good.
