      >inb4 "B-but vidya = art!"
Sure, if you're a coddled leftist homosexual.
Video games are not true art. They are TOYS, first and foremost, tailored for children & hobbyists. Those who think they qualify as """art""" are the same who've infiltrated the industry to spout their woke ideologies and nothing more. Movies (AKA actual art) and toys should remain separate, as true art is something that cannot be interacted with by the literal definition.

People binge watch tv shows and youtube videos for hours on end. Not to mention sportsball watchers or me and you and everybody else ITT wasting time on this god forsaken site. Or gooning, which is easily the worst hobby on earth. A good rule of thumb is to play as little multiplayer games as possible because that's an endless hamster wheel. Very moronic. Film is a method of story telling and good stories have always been the backbone of every society. They provide hero figures for people to aspire to and imitate. Video games are escapism that only pass the time. The games that are vessels for good stories are far and few between.

I think it depends how you use them

If you're a ladder grinding Esports player, yes its a waste of fricking time.

If you play singleplayer games and are chasing new experiences (not Snoy slop but like actually good singleplayer games), you get something that can stick with you and be thought provoking.

Death Stranding made me want to get into film making ironically enough.

I'd be chilling on the couch at night watching a movie before going to bed and tell him what I was watching out of courtesy in case he wanted to join and he'd say "nah I'm too tired I won't be able to pay attention" then go into his room and play league of legends for the next 6 hours screaming so loud I could hear him downstairs and through the walls.

Funny you mention that. I’m a physician and an avid gamer. In training I had attendings ask me if I played, encouraged me to do so, and even discussed what games they like. Newer doctors are on a whole new level in terms of procedural or surgical technique thanks to video games. Modern procedures are very often just real life video games where you’re manipulating a controller and avoiding bad outcomes.

Name, television and film is. You sit there and fry your brain watching moving images. At least gaming uses your critical thinking and problem solving skills while maintaining interaction with the player so they're always aware.

This, and lol at the gamers seething in the replies. Videogames hack your brain and create a replacement for actual achievement, especially multiplayer/competitive games, where people pour hours and hours to gain a skill that is utterly useless outside of this thing that doesn't advance their own lives in the slightest. Only hard drugs, social media and porn compare.

TV and movies can be bad, but aren't as bad because they are actually passive activities. They may fill your brain with garbage but they don't actually warp the way it functions like videogames do.

Honestly, videogames should be banned or at least put on the same status as drugs and porn.

Baby Shark has 79.2M views, high views must mean something is legitimate according to your line of thinking. I guess that means Baby Shark is in fact real music, worthy of being compared to any song, and one could also say it is better music than “Can you hear the music”, because again, it has four times the views. Rather than critically think about things, let’s simply base everything on views shall we? We are all a bunch of good NPC’s, and we don’t need to make any decisions for ourselves, good show, very good show.

In games it's shitters like Hans Zimmer, Jesper Kyd, Inon Zur and Marty O’ Donnell.

Jesper Kyd did some well liked soundtracks. People are generally fond of his work on Blood Money and AC2. Blood Money in particular is one that's noticeable because the new Hitman games are similar in many ways but have much less memorable atmospheres and the completely forgettable soundtrack contributes to that.

They all have some tracks that are fine.
But the majority of their discography is incredibly shit.
Meanwhile take a random japanese composer and even the ones who are blatant plagiarizers still manage to make something at least interesting 95% of the time.

Not really. A lot of people on Cinemaphile agree with Ebert and think people who want to label anything and everything Art are modern art moneylaunderers.
If you post a "games can never be art" thread with an Ebert image you'll get a few butthurt responses and then like 300+ ones saying how much they hate the "games are art" crowd, mocking the notion that movies can be art, hating on Duchamp fanboys and poking fun at modern art definitions.
I've been in way too many of those threads myself.

Vidya isn't my preferred form of art but it's art nevertheless and arguably requires more skill and time than a movie does. Certainly a student film.
So I don't see why it wouldn't be considered art when it comes audiovisual stimuli and more often than not a story.

            Anonymous

Well to have a reasonable discussion on the subject we'd first have to define art since that's what all the Cinemaphile threads ultimately come down to having an issue with.
I personally do not subscribe to the notion that "anything can be art" or that "anything that evokes an emotion is art" as these both make the term functionally meaningless.

If animation, 2D or 3D is art, then games are art, based on the fact that they're 3D animation. The only difference between a game and a movie is that a game is interactive.

Ebert is wrong. Vidya can potentially be one of the most potent forms of art because you can participate and make decisions there.
Only literature has that component of the reader adding his own mental picture to the story.
But that isn't to say most vidya takes advantage of its format. Just like movies, modern vidya is pretty shit.

Mom could have given you a guitar and you could have been a failure or the best guitarist in the world raking in pussy and millions due to your drive and dedication to the art.
You could play videogames, getting fat and braindead, or thanks to that passion you could work in the industry and create them, making billions and spreading joy to people.
You could watch movies, but even make movies thanks to your passion for them, and become famous and win oscars.
You can read manga all day and fake to be learning japanese, or you could actually start to draw thanks to your passion for them and become a great and famous artist.
You can watch porn and be a filthy coomer, or you could create porn by exploiting some dumb teens. It is all in your attitude and how you want to use the passion and tools you got. Guitars aren't superior to videogames, nor videogames are superior to guitars.
