So Mike is stupidly convincing himself that she's worth giving another chance to because if the relationship does work out, then it was all worth it.
While I hate to say it, this seems like a very teenager-thing to do.

yeah a teenager would totally do this, if she were his actual girlfriend and not some chick who calls him occasionally and has only seen him twice in the last 8 years.
In real life a teenager would 110% dump his LDR he never interacts with for the girl he's had a crush on for his entire life, especially after said girl just forgave him for everything he feels bad about.
You're not wrong, but for the sake of conversation (because I'm bored) I will say this.
To Mike and Sandy, they are in relationship no matter how shallow or superficial it really is. While it does make sense for him to move on and go after his crush who has finally opened back up to him, he hasn't broken his Sandy addiction yet. She still has her claws in him. So he still gives into her. What happened with Lucy could be seen as a quick rebound because Mike believed he lost Sandy for good but now she's begging him to take her back.
It isn't too uncommon for some couples to have on-again-off-again relationships because they're dumb and don't know anything beyond what they've already experienced. Or look at all the people who married their high school sweethearts but then came to greatly regret it.
