>Be casual comic reader
>Decided to visit a comic/card store
>Met someone who's really cool
>Talk about Marvel stuff
>He brings up golden age of comics
>Explain to him I didn't know what it is
>"How do you call yourself a comic book fan?"
>He shifts his focus on scrolling through comic books
Do I really have to know certain things in comic books? I'm a casual reader I can't remember everything. I just want to be accepted in the comic book community. Right now I'm starting off with the first 100 Spider-Man issues. Thanks.

He was a bit a snob, but now you know about the golden age, so you did learn something that day

Congrats, you just experienced a phenomenon known as "gatekeeping". Only shitty people do it.

Gatekeeping is a good thing, gay

Look, if there's more people like you in the comics community I'll probably just stop reading comic books altogether. I don't wanna bother people of my lack of knowledge. I thought maybe I can enjoy comics and share the love of reading but I guess not.

NTA, but I would accept you in comics discussions if and only if you were willing to partake in healthy comics talk. We're full up on shitheads.

Don't you have a buddy to ask comic book questions or something, Jesus christ or go to wikis, read the comics you can learn shit by yourself, stop acting like a victim

            >Don't you have a buddy to ask comic book questions or something
            My friends don't read
            >Jesus christ or go to wikis,
I was told this was a bad idea and I'm not a real comic book fan.
            > read the comics you can learn shit by yourself,
            I am
            >stop acting like a victim
I'm not. I just don't wanna bother people.

I doubt most people will get bothered if you ask questions genuinely, that's it

Let's pull up those sales numbers again, shall we?

Gatekeeping hasn’t effected a single sale. Twitter is full of thousands of homosexuals and morons who claim to be fans but don’t buy a single thing. So clearly we needed more gatekeeping and expectations of “fans”.

Nah we needed more gatekeeping. Now we have casuals “stanning” characters like psylocke despite not liking her original costume.

It's just busting balls anon, take it in stride. A lot of people don't realize when they're coming off as abrasive, especially older generations and the socially awkward. If you express curiosity about learning more and following conversation and not outright scurrying away, then you continue on and the conversation.

I think there’s a game many people play where they pretend they know more about things than they really do. He could’ve mentioned the Golden Age, but how much comics from then has he read? Maybe a couple. Does he have any favorite stories from them? Probably not. But comics are a big area, you could just read about them without even reading any for months on end. If you’re enjoying them, just enjoy them, the original Spider-Man comics are great, and they don’t even get bad until the 90s (but even those have their charm). Just take any perceived elitism in stride, and keep an open mind to things. Great comics are everywhere, in every era.
