The first TOS movie was 90% (admittedly quite pretty) shots of spaceship models slowly floating around to music. It was trying way too hard to be 2001 especially when 2001 wasn't that great anyway

that 48 minute docking sequence was definitely the worst part of the movie. I get it, the audience was suppose to be in awe, but it aged terribly. the models don't even look like they're accurately scaled. at least they learned their lesson by the second movie and cut 90% of the sequence when reusing those shots.

yes it even had that music part at the beginning. I was made in 1979 only 10 years after 2001 so that was still considered a landmark of sci-fi movie making. At least its good they did not try to imitate star wars by giving kirk droids and a light saber. It took one film for Star Trek to find its movie style and look in the second film.
