I find they generally do but tbh I appreciate social media to some extent. With social media so prevalent its getting so easy to get good hi res pics off of girls social media pages. Been doing it since MySpace days but really wished we had the same quality pics back then.

Not only did my social life pretty much die since everyone seemed to organise everything on there. I feel like it's even too late to get back on it as all the effects of not having a social life, isolation, depression, etc piled up on me over the past decade+. On top of people do finding it odd more often than not if you don't have even a basic one. It would be like trying to explain a large gap on your resume (what social media essentially is for your social life). You cant even move to a new town or new workplace or hobby to fake it til you make it. You always initially link up with people through social media and they DO check out your profile a bit to see if you are worth hanging out with and interact with further meaningfully. As opposed to judging purely the person infront of them.
Even now people now might not have posted in years but they still have it just there.

It depends on where you're from. Some places don't care about socials and only use them to keep in touch with distant relatives or old friends, and in some they're a daily necessity.
Typically on TV and in movies it's portrayed as an absolute necessity, because they're made by people working in an industry where it is a necessity; every writer and producer on today's tv shows and movies treat social media as part of their job, so they assume it's as important to the rest of the country/world as it is to them.
