With all the gods floating around, it's safer to be an atheist. Then at least god won't send you to hell for worshiping a competitor after you die.
Calling it atheism isn't really accurate because in reality it was more akin to pitting one myth (fundagelical historically and scientifically illiterate McChristianity) against another myth (19th century materialistic historically and scientifically illiterate nihilism)

I remember hearing all the time from them that Atheists were the last group it was acceptable to hate. I live in the UK where no one gives a shit about atheism so it sounds absurd to me, but I've also seen some cases of Atheists getting a lot of shit in America.
