Yes, I find most manga and anime disgusting and the 23 first volumes of Berserk some of the best fiction in my life. The anime is awful btw, read the manga. You can download the entire series from nyaa in high resolution.
The praise is fairly deserved, it's a very well executed character focused story and it singlehandedly made the dark fantasy aesthetic/genre mainstream. Has one of the best art out there too, some panels in later chapters are painting-level detailed.
It'll probably not change your life, but if you like fantasy and are willing to read a manga it's a good very good choice
