How? That movie was generally disliked by everyone. It was terrible, i think the worst Jurassic Park movie ever made. This doesn't paint The Rock in a good light.

I'm fairly certain the whole thing is a big scam.
          >make a film using your own production company
          >pay yourself for your own film to be made
          >launder money through cinemas without ever needing people in the seats

I wondered this same thing. Everyone seems to think some of these blockbuster movies are universally terrible but they made millions at the box office. The Transformers movies come to mind yet they made six of those fricking things, the toys never moved on the shelves and everyone hated them.

They sold better in Canada, and the movie toys unironically upped Takara-Tomy's standards for detail and articulation (2007 Leader-class Prime had articulated fingers and ball-joint thumbs, basically Master-grade Gundam hands, when most others were using blocky, unmoving closed fists

Summer releases. Warner Brothers screwed Black Adam by giving it an October release when kids are back in school and it's already getting colder and therefore renewed Covid concerns. And yet it's STILL on its way to DOUBLE it's budget.
        The Batman $770,836,163
Batman movie and still well under a billion dollars, so you can see Covid IS still a FACTOR! If The Dark Knight can't pull what it used to, imagine how much of a draw The Rock must be to nearly DOUBLE his budget being the one to introduce to the audience a character virtually unknown out of the comics.
        >Thor: Love and Thunder $760,928,081
        Summer release

        All of China behind it.

No one has ever seen a R*ck movie due to this bald homosexual being in it. He stars in cookie cutter shit CG movies with inflated marketing budgets.
The average movie going homosexual doesn't pick up on much and can't judge if a movie is going to be shit just by looking at the marketing, if something is being marketed to them they will see it. But they do pick up on some things. If they went to the movies many times and were bored they will pick up that R*ck was in the movies so they are less likely to go see another R*ck movie.
It's also possible that many people see the new R*ck movie advertised and they figure they already saw the movie. The average person has very little awareness of anything and they will not be able to tell you if they saw Journey 2 ten years ago or they're thinking of Jungle Cruise from last year. They just remember that they saw a R*ck movie with him in the jungle. If they simply painted the R*ck blue people would go ''oh, I haven't seen this movie'' and go see it.
This is a failure for the industry. They don't understand the customer.

But we're talking about his box office draw. They make more money with him.

The last movie he starred in that franchise was in 2017 and the last movie in that franchise was in 2021 with covid. The industry moves fast and he might have been big in 2017-2019 but he's nothing now.

An argument could be made that the Dwayne/Diesel drama is manufactured, to make it all the more triumphant when Hobbs returns to the main franchise, which could make more even more money.

      Budget doesn't include marketing costs.

Marketing costs can often be as much as the budget itself. The movie has probably just scraped a profit, which is a massive disappointment for a film of this size.

      Anonymous

No. To put that in perspective, The Mummy starring Tom fricking Cruise made 409m on budget of 125m and this is still a flop. Black Adam is even bigger flop than The Mummy because of higher budget.

      Anonymous

      >Marketing budget is usually at the minimum half of the production budget, which isn't included in the budget
      >Theaters take a cut of the earnings as well. Usually from anywhere to 20-40% depending on how big the movie is, for example Force Awakens took more than 60% of the earnings and theaters took less than 40% because theaters would be packed and ensure they'd make more through concessions and multiple screenings
In reality, Black Adam would need 600million worldwide for it to be secured as profitable. This is all without taking in to account the percentages for individual international markets and what not.

Dwayne hasn't had a hit since the Jumanji sequel in 2019. Since then its been nothing but underperforming movies. Covid literally ruined his career, and if it wasn't for his ventures in energy drinks and alcohol he would be crawling back to the WWE. Even guys like Logan Paul are way more successful and connected than he is nowadays with the current generation of zoomers. He was really hitting a stride in 2019 only for the crash of covid to slow him down to a crawl.

Good marketing, he tricked people in to thinking F&F was successful cause of him. If you take a lot at his filmography before Fast Five way back in 2011, you'll see nothing but small budget movies that barely make their return investment. After Fast Five, the only movies where he made a big splash in the box office with himself as the star were the two Jumanji movies. San Andreas, Rampage, Skyscraper all end up barely being successful. 2017 onwards, he got himself a bigger slice through producing and he somehow convinced investors that he's a big draw because he was big in social media at the time. Now all of that is being exposed since Hobbs and Jumanji were his last big hits in 2019.

The Rock’s imperial phase has come and gone. The last movies he was in that made (big) money were Jumanji 3 and Hobbs and Shaw. The former is an ensemble cast that he leads (but also stars two popular comedic draws and a sexy redhead) and the other is a spin-off of an incredibly successful franchise he joined late in the game and is also a buddy cop movie. He’s no longer a draw as a leading man. I have no clue how Red Notice performed.

Let’s not blame the Rock. Even his name can’t recover the very much already sunken ship that is the DCEU. Did any anons see James Gunn’s Mister Terrific tweet? They’ve wasted their most popular characters and will have to resort to scraping the bottom of the barrel. It won’t work. Movies like BoP and TSS were good for capeshit, but among normies, DC is synonymous with bad movies. They’ll come out for Batman stuff to a degree but that is it. DC is dead. Bury it.

Why does it seem like everyone is shitting on The Rock all of a sudden? It seemed like just a little while ago everyone was praising him and hailing him as the last true movie star, then it seems post-Black Adam everyone is saying how terrible he is. Is it just Cinemaphile being contrarian? Is it Disney shills trying to do some weird anti-promotion against DC?

    Black Adam - 75% ROI

Movie theaters get anywhere from 40-60 percent of ticket sales depending on the length of the engagement and the country. They say rule of thumb for a film to be successful in theaters it has to make 2 1/2 it's budget.
Jungle Cruise lost a lot of money. Black Adam is going to lose the studio a lot of money too.

Those numbers should be icing on the cake, not where you resort to clawing back the budget. Retailers get a cut, digital distribution platforms get a cut, the cost of mass producing physical media for sale, so on so forth. Fwiw I've been to a few major retailers in the last week or two and didn't see a single black Adam toy. Even the Panther merch is very small considering Xmas is right around the corner. Toy companies are reeling over the unmarketable toys recently, they're more gun-shy than ever now.
