my ex and I tried to watch it since she was big on naruto and avatar and I didn't pay attention to either growing up. avatar was kino, even korra, but we couldn't get through all the filler in naruto. it was kinda jarring, sometimes it felt like we were watching the same episode twice

Naruto ended, was continued with aged up characters as Naruto Shippuden, then it ended. Now there is a show called Boruto about Naruto's son, I think. I never bothered with Boruto. I can't start another shonen series as an adult.
Don't watch Boruto, it's absolutely awful.

Wtf is Mixed Canon/Filler Episodes:
Exactly what it sounds like, canon stuff from the manga with some stuff thrown in for filler that usually pertains to the plot that's ongoing. If that bothers you there's a cut somewhere called The Ocean Cut or some shit with the objective of keeping it 1:1 with the manga with no non-canon scenes.
In Naruto that means one of 3 things:
>Character A needs character B to do something. As filler, Character A has to do something that takes up 1/2-3/4 of the episode instead of It just happening.
>Character has a flashback in the episode that is not in the manga, often to a “off camera” scene that wasn’t something we the audience saw before.
>Two characters are fighting and they use techniques that they didn’t use in the manga (every Kakashi fight is this way)
Whatever you do it’s best to stop watching after the pain arc ends
You had good taste. Naruto is dogshit. Tried to watch it again years later. Didn't enjoyed it at all. It's bland, boring and only good to pass time when you have nothing better to do. Fricking Hamtaro is more entertaining.

I'm watching it now. Overall it's actually pretty good, has some good humor and character writing.
But it's heavily bogged down by filler, and by filler I don't mean that they have episodes unrelated to the main plot. They constantly use flashbacks of clips from previous episodes even though the viewer already knows what happened. They do it so much that some episodes are literally 80% flashbacks and 20% plot progression, it is infuriating.
It's still less annoying than dbz's episodes of people just powering up
