'Breaking Bad' actor says Americans should 'stfu' about gas prices if they 'love capitalism so much'

>Actor Dean Norris criticized people who are complaining about soaring gas prices across the United States.
>The "Breaking Bad" star said current gas prices are "fair market" and urged anyone who "love[s] Capitalism" to "stfu," an acronym for shut the f--- up.
>"You're not getting 'robbed' at the pump," Norris wrote in a tweet on Wednesday. "You’re paying fair market price for a commodity. If you love Capitalism so much then stfu."

Capitalism is essentially what we describe economic systems with no/little government interference. The state has banned new drilling, new pipelines, raised taxes on current fossil fuel sources and then printed trillions of dollars during a shortage. It's not capitalism, it's moronism.

      Anonymous

Not sure if the situation translates to oil in the US, but here in Aus our natural gases prices are sky high at the moment, and a big part of it is due to skyrocketing demand overseas. It is more profitable for the gas companies to export than sell locally so we have to pay more as a result. In this case regulation could keep prices down by forcing companies to set aside gas for locals, which is in the national interest.
In a globalised economy more capitalism is definitely not always good.

        Anonymous

That would just lead to your government rising your debt to sustain the same level of production, leading to more economic inflation, abd probrably higher taxe. Nothing is free fren, its just better to wait for new projects bring the prices down to meet demand and stop your central bank from expanding the monetary base than trying to control prices and enventually destroying your population purcashing power.

If the US were allowed to unleash its energy without stupid Democrats around then guess what? The inflation, the war, none of that would have meant a damn thing to the price of oil. Because in that alternate universe the US producers could increase production easily and flood the market. That would hurt Russia even more than the stupid sanctions that was basically the US shooting themselves in the foot.

you're the moron that doesn't understand supply and demand or how a basic market works or even geopolitics. If the US energy industry were allowed to thrive without moronic leftists trying to destroy it, then the US would largely dictate the price of Oil on the global market. Anyone with a brain would know this because when US Shale came online it sent the price of oil to record lows. If the US had a thriving energy sector right now they'd be using it in the proxy war against Russia, colluding with US oil producers to send price of oil to rock bottom and punish Russia, everyone would be swimming in cheap gas prices right now. But because we are ran by idiotic Democrats who destroy US energy, they couldn't do that, and they went with sanctions that hurt them more than they hurt Russia, just moronic...you fricking people are so stupid.

We have spent more on Ukraine in the last 3 months than the average yearly spending on the Iraq War (150 billion vs. ~125 billion). Ukraine's war is our war, you can't just say "Putin invades Ukraine" as if US policy has nothing to do with the prolonged war that is still being fought
Russia is going to win this war. The smartest thing any global leaders can do is to get out of the way and hope that it happens sooner rather than later, because Russia is holding all the cards. Biden's plan was to destroy the Russian economy and it worked for about a month but now the ruble is higher than it was prior to the invasion. So now we're in a position where our politicians are adamantly supporting the prolonging of a conflict that is already largely decided, even as the global economy suffers due to this prolonged engagement.

Obviously inflation is global at this point, it was a reaction to the pandemic spending of all major nations, but the skyrocketing oil prices can be fixed pretty easily by just not throwing more money into Ukraine

Did it? All we've been hearing for the last 10 years is that fracking has made the US self-sufficient in oil. So it did or it didn't? Because if the people who own/control that fracked oil/gas can turn around and sell it to Japan or Poland or whoever the israelites feel they have an 'in' with at the moment, then we aren't actually self-sufficient, are we?

        >fracking has made the US self-sufficient in oil. So it did or it didn't?
fracking makes the US able to tap into enough energy to be self-sufficient, yes. The problem is Democrats want to ban fracking and work towards that, making it difficult to take advantage of the opportunity.

they want to ban it or they already did? very big difference. if it already made us self-sufficient and they haven't banned it [they just want to!] then why is that not reflected in stable prices? it's obviously exiting the domestic market somewhere along the line.

Rising prices are direct result of economic inflation done by governments of this world
Market production is not able to follow governments economic inflation instantaneously, it takes time for offer and demand to stabilize after governments do shit like these, sometimes it never stabilizes in a way to favor population purcashing power and most of time capital concentrates on the hands of banks and government.
And this time governments printed money like never before

They want to ban it and they're being openly hostile towards it.

            >if it already made us self-sufficient and they haven't banned it [they just want to!] then why is that not reflected in stable prices?
Because of risks from the Democrats all of US energy is not being tapped. You have to put yourself in the shoes of a businessman. Would you invest your money into a business in which the ruling government says openly they want to shut down and ban your business? You could run the risk of losing all your investment or ruining yourself, why would you do that? If the Democrat government wans intermittent energy production then they need to drill for their own energy. But they wouldn't do that since they have to politically posture about the environment to their stupid voters.

Thats not why prices are rising
Prices are rising because governments expanded their monetary base, aka printed trillions, everywhere at the same time during the pandemic
Governments inflated their economies and as a consequence we are living trough hellish inflation
Now nations are rising interest rates to curb that, that will lead the world to a global recession
All because homosexuals cant understand how politicians, State official and metacapitalist elites manipulate the economy because central banks have monopoly on money guaranted by the State.

Printing money should have no impact on goods produced under national control -- which we are constantly propagandized that oil is. It would be under our law [money].

                Anonymous

It took way too long for the inflation to kick in after the printing, anon. There's no way to convince anyone of a direct causation rather than causation of shipping crisis, lack of workers due to huge retirement numbers in response to the pandemic, and the sanctions against Russia which increased gas prices to insane levels

                Anonymous

yes inflation raises prices, but what impacts the price of specifically oil the most are market forces driven by production of Oil producing nations. Just like with governments expanding their monetary base if say the Saudis increase production and flood the market then the price of oil will go down significantly, regardless of inflation. The price of oil historically has been decided by OPEC. Right now the situation is fricked up because Biden put sanctions on Russian oil exports, so it's like he created artificial scarcity in the global oil market.

And it's especially pointless because Russia is posting record profits despite reduced production because Europe and the countries who don't give a shit about US sanctions are still buying fossil fuels from them anyway. Way to go Biden, you moronic dusty old bones.

spot on, it makes me facepalm even thinking about the outright idiocy. All the sanctions did is help raise the price of energy in the global market thus offsetting whatever financial punishment they thought they could put on Russia and at the same time shooting themselves in the foot by hurting American and European citizens who have to now pay more more for energy. But they don't actually care about their citizens anyway so.

right.. but why is a country that is supposedly "self-sufficient in oil" like the United States subject to global market forces in oil pricing?

                Anonymous

Because US oil companies can sell oil outside of the US and that fact drives up prices within the US

We don't really live in a free market society, especially when it comes to oil which is essentially held in monopolies. It's Syndicatalism and corporatism. It's artificially inflated prices due to a lack of development into self sufficiency. We've known that a conflict with oil rich powers would come, and rather than developing our own energy capabilities, even those outside of oil and natural gas, we didn't. The public spoke against oil production and shut down a lot of our capabilities in a 'not in my neighborhood' mentality shit show. If we had developed our oil fields, pushed forward with nuclear power, or did any number of things that broke away from bullshit lobbying, public hysteria, and shortsighted optimistism (here's looking at you Germany) we'd be fine. This is the result of a failed planned economy and the subsidizing of ineffective garbage that hasn't produced for 4 decades.

The kind that supports some fictional utopia that has never worked and never can work, or the kind that thinks Sweden is some kind of paradise with a complexly different economic system to the US, while in reality it’s exactly the same, just with higher taxes.

Right, so back in around 2015 tons of oil drilling companies went out of business because oil became too cheap and they couldn’t make money. See, the new oil drilling tech allows for so much oil to be drilled in the US that there was too much supply and prices dropped too much to sustain the drillers. Then along comes Biden and doesn’t allow these drillers to start back up again. The supply constraint is due to government interference, there is more than enough cheap oil in this country for decades. You see Yellen declare the on,y way out of this dilemma is green energ? That’s utter bs but that’s the reason the democrats insist on shutting down US drilling, they need to cause stress to push their agenda

Not necessarily, in antiquity trust-based societies were common where oath-breakers were heavily punished or ostracized and slander was considered as bad as attempted murder. We've been slowly weaned off the honor system so it may seem farfetched now but a collapse of current society would just bring forth a trust-based society again, because that is our natural inclination.

If you're looking for career politicians, I'd say basically none, but there are a handful that I believe to be significantly more honest than others. Romney is one of them. Many of the Republicans who a certain conman in Florida is calling "Rinos" are actually people of integrity and character. I don't always agree with their beliefs and opinions, but I *do* respect them, and I do believe that they want the best for us as a nation.

Well, I do and I assume you would as well, granted there is a difference between white lies and breaking an oath. A problem is we are too forgiving with major lies (such as cheating and oath-breaking) as a society. The idea of defamation laws was supposed to counter-act communal justice by passing the torch to a more objective arbitrator (the courts) but all this did was make it extremely difficult and costly, which contributes to the problem. All in all, it isn't hard to regain trust in a society, it requires being socially gregarious, being punishing or socially distant towards those who commit major lies and conducting yourself honorably. The Chinese, of course, could not achieve these things naturally so they inclined towards a Social Credit System to eliminate mistrust in modernity. We'll see how that pans out as a system which is enforced rather than naturally formed out of morality and an honor system.

The US in the modern era is a country run by powerful lobbies which exist to support companies that are more preoccupied with short-term gain than long-term investment due to needing immediate returns for investors. 'Pathetic' is the fact they allowed the country to get to this point by being extremely divested in education and politics.

Yes actually. Gas prices are based on supply and demand, you're getting fricked because of inflation, because the current administration enacted numerous policies that hampered the growth of the US oil industry and because there's a stupid war going on in Ukraine that should have been resolved diplomatically that's keeping Russian and Ukrainian oil out of the market.

Its not like Texaco just woke up and decided to frick you, oil companies like any company try to maximize their profits and they set their prices based on supply and demand when they set their price at $2 a gallon they're making about the same profit margin as at $5 a gallon the difference is in the market factors that set the price for a barrel of oil.

It's funny how shit that would've been a big deal a couple years ago with the wrong guy in office is now a part of life that you should just put up with to protect the reputation of the right guy in office. As an aside, crony capitalism is just socialism for corporations and the elite and no, I don't like it, and no, it isn't a "fair market" for industries to get tax-funded handouts from the government to keep them afloat while they're perfectly free to price gauge for profit.

  76. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

In a sane country, things deemed as necessities, such as food, water, and energy(in whatever form) would be run by the state as for-profit businesses subsidized by taxes. Farmers, for example, would be government employees being paid to produce as much food as possible instead of being subsidized for *not* producing, with the excess being sold as export or even given out as foreign aid, and the same would hold true for water and energy.

Innovation would still be in the hands of the private sector, with those companies making deals with the government to set aside a portion of farmland, as well as power and water purification facilities, for the purposes of research and development. Patent holders would be rewarded by having their patents bought by the government at an assessment of those patents' fair-market prices. That way, you're paying people to think and improve the world instead of simply maintain a status quo and crush competition for a company's shareholders.

I hate corpos as much as the next guy, and oil companies are gay as frick, but the reality of the situation is this, it is eye wateringly expensive to start new drilling operations on land that has no guarantee of actually producing oil.

if the government literally nationalized the oil industry via executive orders or price controls, the only thing that would change is the amount of time you'd wait at the pump (See Nixon and the 70's)

A lot of our momentum in terms of domestic energy production was fricked by Biden due to him literally reverse everything trump did.
