This was the funniest shit. It's a parody of the real show University Challenge and "Footlights" is the Cambridge University comedy society

This is the episode with Motorhead in it too, how can you not enjoy it?

Also this was the episode that almost got the show cancelled when it aired, one of the execs at the BBC saw Vivian kicking his own head down the rails and lost his shit.
There's an old interview with Ben Elton where he talks about it hehe

Also bands are almost impossible without friends, so you pretty much need to be friends first, then band. what made the BBC shift from being the best tv had to offer to the absolute trash it is now? maybe channels should be ruled by a dictator intellectual snob instead of diversity groups

The BBC has always kind of been the same thing. It's ruled by a bunch of poshos, who feel they're doing the public a service, by showing them "enriching" content. It's just that the mentality of what that constitutes has kind of shifted over the years.

Because Poshos back then were real Poshos who cared about culture and shit (or pretended to). Now they're just the biggest diversity shills. Can't let anything get in the way of their endless waves of cheap labour, or make them seem "regressive". The trick these days seems to be finding ways to be an elitist, while appearing not to be one.

box ticking, selling off TV rights to sports and good shows, Savile scandal, and a London centric view on everything. We know this because the Director General himself has told the BBC staff these things and that if they don't get their shit together they'll be privatised and they'll deserve it. Panel shows being so enduring.
A proper show takes a lot of effort to get off the ground (and money if you’re buying the rights), requires decent casting while navigating the diversity minefield, a consistently good script and production staff. It also can become a victim of success, since irreplaceable stars will require higher pay, and people will expect it to consistently get better.
A panel show requires a few mainstays that aren’t insufferable and that’s it. The comedians bring their own material, you can pick the diversity hires of the day for easy checkbox ticking/crony appeasement, and you can easily blame a dud episode on the guests and get people back on board with some good old fashioned seal horking.
