s1-s3 are pretty good, after that it kind of just goes through the motions and doesn't really go anywhere. i think the show runner got bored with it and stopped caring
season 1 and 2 are really good
season 3 is a bit over the top but decent
season 4 kinda disappointing
season 5 is ok
the show is not bad but the time jump and all the missing stories kinda make it shit at the end

I recently watched it again, and, honestly... no. There's a good show in there somewhere, but it is relentlessly buried under fat that needed to be trimmed and darlings that needed to be killed.
If you do watch it, the first 2 seasons are the only ones worth it really. Season 3 is sorta fun because of the Gyp and how Nucky hits his lowest point. About 50% of it is garbage though.
Season 4 is just mystifying. There is NO plot line to care about any more. It's an entire season of filler, and some beloved characters get killed off. Not worth the watch.
Season 5 is kind of worth the watch due to it being anti-kino. It's sort of a 'where could we POSSIBLY twist it from here' exercise in shitty and contrived writing. This one, I would argue, is almost so bad its good territory.
Season 5 is worth watching for the flashback scenes. Bad ending and there's really no justification for Tommy to do what he did, but the young Nucky scenes have a similar vibe to the first season.
Yeah, the actors playing young Nucky, Eli and Gillian are all really good.
what they did with jimmy didn't sit right with me. it's not that it happened it's everything else that they did with him
s1-3 it's solid, s4 it goes off the rails with the

the story is nothing special, watch it if you like the period setting (3-piece suits and Tommy guns; the production design was good) kino opening credits too. character-wise there are a couple of good ones, like Rothstein and Rosetti, but most are not that interesting
Season 1 and 2 are great. 3 is where it starts getting desperate with having to inject a new villain just to keep the plot moving, but still entertaining. 4 is shit. I actually liked 5, even if it was rushed.
Overall, I would say it's worth a watch.

Season 4 turned a minor supporting character (Chalky) into the main character. Dr. Narcisse was weird and not in the good way. It also happens to be the season where they squeeze in an interracial cuckold scene.

It's much better than those. Behind Deadwood and early Game of Thrones, BWE is one of the best shows HBO has made. These are among the very few shows that are able to juggle a huge cast of characters and do it intelligently. The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, and the Wire are very "normie" shows in that what you see is what you get, there isn't much depth to the characters or subtext to the scenes.
Sopranos is easily on the same level, it may be loved by normalfags but that's because of the mob setting.

A great show hiding withing a mediocre show. There are just so many lousy and ultimately pointless storylines to wade through to get to the good stuff. See: anything with Gillian and Harrow post S2, basically everything with Margaret (remember that super important subplot where she was trying to get doctors to pasteurize milk or something?), Chalky's full retard affair with that singer. They kept building up these mob wars and then when they decided to cancel the show they just jammed a bunch of them in S5 or had them happen offscreen in a timeskip or something (like Rothstein's death). It wasted so much potential.
