it's bizarre to me that the Church found it heretical when it came out because it had a demon child say bad words because the entire movie is about the importance of faith even in the face of overwhelming evil

Because she’s a real child saying those things

Mercedes McCambridge would have been in her 50s when she did the voice of Pazuzu in The Exorcist.

If you watch the production footage where Karras is interviewing Regan, and her face is all fricked up, and her voice isn’t dubbed over yet, I actually think that it’s scarier to hear a little girl’s voice coming out of that gruesome monster face.

Most anons here are underage so they don't remember but pre 2010 outspoken christians were fricking deranged and accused absolutely anything that depicted satan, paranormal activity, or violence of being satanic and heretical because it got them attention and upset people.

You could make a game called DEMONKILLER 5000 KILL ALL DEMONS I FRICKING HATE SATAN and they'd still call it pro satan.

There's people who still act like this living today. They love larping about being possessed for some reason. Zak Bagins is the most famous guy of this genre but he's almost certainly just taking them for a ride.

Literally a quick Google search would show that there wasn't this massive outrage from the Catholic Church when the exorcist came out. That was purely marketing. The Catholic Church's position on the film was that while inappropriate for general audiences (kids), it portrayed the power of faith positively. It's annoying that Christians at large have to bear the stereotype of some insane American protestant who thinks pokemon cards are satanic. The Catholic Church tends to be more even keel on matters of pop culture.

Is it? I'm not catholic and wasn't raised around Catholicism but I think it's pretty good at being broadly on the topic of faith and how no matter where an answer comes from, no matter how pure your intentions and no matter how much love you have you can't always do everything yourself because some things are simply bigger than any person and really no one person or institution has all the answers.

My high school English teacher is the priest in the last scene. He was an actual trained exorcist brought in as a technical advisor.

I know it's bait but I don't see this much as a pure horror movie. Mostly a drama with horror elements with the possesion and stuff. Not saying that's a bad thing though

People make this argument for every horror movie.
      >it's more of a thriller/sci-fi/comedy/drama/et cetera.
The majority of horror films are about something non-horrifying being interrupted by horror elements. There are very few "pure horror" movies unless it's a slideshow of jumpscares.

My boomer mum loves this film. She told me the other day how she bought it on DVD recently so she could watch it one afternoon with a nice pot of tea and some cake.

I watched it with my mom and brother last year. I was laughing the whole time and I thought that everyone at the theather was as well. When the movie ended I talked about the movie with my family and they said that it was scary as frick, and that they thought I was laughing out of nervousness. Wtf? People really get scared by this fake ass fantasy shit?

I watched haloween with my mom and we were both laughing. But I don't see what is funny about the exorcist

The jumpscares and the funny things that Regan says (I specially remember lol'ing every time she said "frick her", I just found it so funny, she looked like a little kid trying to annoy its parents).

NTA but I'd say The Exorcist has more humor than Halloween. The demon's dialogue is funny.

He was making kino. He understood, as the Romans understood, that actors are trash, prostitutes, and should be treated as such if it leads to kino.

The warrens were doing that before the exorcist and they didn't get mainstream attention until Amityville, so basically not related to The Exorcist at all.

This was loosely based on Ronald Hunkeler. He grew up to be a gay, atheist, NASA engineer who claimed he just a shitty kid who made the whole possession thing up for attention and was terrified people would leak his real identity to the press after the book/movie became extremely popular.
