what even is the social dynamics in the world of NIMH?
Animals wear clothing because the rats were wearing them and they just sorta.....adapted as well?? Some don't still so were they always just feral until coming into contact with the rats or something?
Explicitly yes. The rats gained intelligence when they were experimented on at NIMH, and when they escaped to the farm, they gave the surrounding animals intelligence as well, somehow. Outside of that little farm, all animals are feral.
Explicitly yes. The rats gained intelligence when they were experimented on at NIMH, and when they escaped to the farm, they gave the surrounding animals intelligence as well, somehow. Outside of that little farm, all animals are feral.
I accept that Jonarhan's children can develop intelligence via his genes, and Brisby was slowly uplifted by Jonathan and Ages. The other animals though; Jeremy, Shrew, even the Owl, I don't see how they can develop that level of intelligence via osmosis.
that's some decent headcanon. if the Owl had been hunting NIHM animals since he was young, I suppose he'd get multiple small doses worth of the serum over years.
Bluth implies it's just nicodemus shapeshifted into the owl since they have the same glowing eyes. In the book the owl is just a wise old animal that johnathan befriended in the past too. It's probably just a byproduct of a kid's book needing a thing or person to help move the story along so no satisfying answer to what or who the owl is.
Owl was a super special perhaps magical character, who lived for a very long time (and possibly Nicodemus' friend). Shrew was introduced to clothes as a friend of the family, but she does not have a human-like house of her own. Jeremy is a crow, they are smart. Animals can talk to each other via Animal Language, that is just something Don assumed people can understand, since that was a very common thing in fiction for a very long time.
Basically, Secret of NIMH cannot be mapped 1:1 on our real life. Mice cannot communicate with crows in the real world, and that's just 1 thing.
Pretty much this.
In the book, it's simply assumed that animals can talk to each other regardless of NIMH experimentation. The rats are smarter than everyone, but everyone has a base level of intelligence that they can use to communicate. Which is weird, because I've always thought of the book as far more grounded and realistic than the movie.
In the Movie, I assume that it's simply magical contact that makes people intelligent. Mrs Brisby lived with John, so she was almost as smart as a person, but Jeremy and Shrew were less intelligent due to their limited exposure to the Rats of NIMH.
Although do I like that idea of Owl being smarter because of him constantly eating the other intelligent creatures.
Don decided the owl should look like Nicodemus, because WHAT IF THEY ARE THE SAME ENTITYYYYY WOOOOOOOO, but that was not definite. Just some weird stuff to make viewers ask questions (there is no right answer). What is obvious is the owl is special. He just is. Why? WHO KNOOOOOWWWWWSSS
the book is the same way with the owl being wise and old even before the nimh stuff and just sort of always being there >wild owls can clock around 20-30 years >oldest on record was 50 years and kept in captivity
by woodland critter standards older owls would seem like ancient beings

That makes me wonder, how old are the Rats? I know that NIMH made them live longer, but how long had they actually been in the rosebush? How many wives did Johnathan go through before Mrs Brisby?

I'd say they have been around in an evolved state for a decade at least. You need to time to standardize your culture, and the rats clearly have it. Even if they are copying what they saw from humans (and wearing clothes made for toys, this is only for the smartest viewers to pick up) and picking and choosing what human behaviors to adopt.

Dragon the cat has been an issue for a while and cats tend to clock around 10 years on average and closer to 20 if they're indoors only and well cared for. Which gives us a sort of soft idea of a timeline

Well, they did not have to live in the rosebush ALL this time. Perhaps they lived in Utah. And before that in Florida. I am just making shit up, but it is completely possible they've been around for 20 or more years, and just lived elsewhere.
>I don't see how they can develop that level of intelligence via osmosis
Perhaps they would have always had the potential to reach that level, but the presence of a competitor in their niche forced them to adapt and express it. Or maybe I've just been playing way too much Monster Hunter...
And I'm not gonna like, but Auntie Shrew? ...would. I requested the world's very first adult pic of her, drawn by Suce in his drawgay days, back when fchan was a thing.
The nimh rats actually have extended lifespans possibly human level. Mrs. Brisby was a normal wild/feral field mouse Johnathan literally fricked intelligence into. She has the short natural lifespan. Luckily her kinds inherited their father's mutated genes making them smarter and longer lived than her.
obviously, but I don't think it quite translates to giving someone intelligence by fricking them

I mean Johnthan also taught as much as he could to Brisby, but it's also heavily implied getting doses of his mutant rat genes did some heavy lifting too.
That is such a fricked thing to do. >Here is your main character bro, she is also the cutest character in the movie. >Also she is the only one who has the lifespan of a mouse, no we don't fix it in the sequel.
Different species, can't interbreed. A rat will more than likely kill and eat a mouse. Hence that guard mercilessly trying to kill Mrs Frisby.
I watched a video of a rat eating a mouse. It was a trapping video to showcase the effectiveness of store bought traps IIRC, it surprised me at first but then I remembered how birds and fish do this.
It's pretty much unique to us to associate animals that look the same like we do, mammals don't give a shit about anything that isn't them at all. If it doesn't smell like your family and is smaller than you it's food.
>isn't strong >isn't intelligent >doesn't say anything funny >almost dies multiple times >doesn't understand what's going on >main struggle is a minor conflict about her family
How is this supposed to feel compelling? Admit it. You just want to frick the rat.
>wizard who was close friend with mouse's dead husband wants to help mouse >convinces her to take his magical amulet, in case she needs it >she needs it, amulet helps her
So the rats under Nicodemus' leadership help move the Brisby home, one way or another. It is the same plot, only Nicodemus is a wizard in this one.
The book isn't much better. >the house-moving ended up becoming a minor event despite it being the main focus of the plot >only real conflict is Auntie Shrew interfering with the rats' process and Ms. Frisby having to come pacify her. >the real climax ends up being the rats' escape from the rose bush while evading exterminators
Fun fact: that was more or less the plot of the movie, when a sci-fi writer who Bluth worked with, ended the script with "what if the rats of NIMH never really existed, but were sort of a collective hallucination?" That spin inspired Don so much, he decided to write his own script, full of 2deep4u mystical shit (what we got in the final product).
Do I have a source? Did I make it up? Yes, and no. It is THIS book
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2342991.The_Animated_Films_of_Don_Bluth
I read it on a blog by the author. Who is a medium sized douche by the way (and he shat on the film's ending too much).
Not a loser (sounds like you've been intaking too much manhwa), just a simple, barely-educated country girl, doing the best she can in a REALLY shitty situation.
>isn't strong
I completely disagree.
Mrs Brisby in the movie showed a lot of strength as a character.
She wasn't anything special, but was willing to move mountains for her children. And did so without hesitation.
She was one of the best interpretations of a hero in a kids movie....because it was realistic.
Despite fear, not being strong, or having no real gifts, she showed tremendous strength and bravery.. yet wasn't a Mary Sue.
Best depiction of a strong female in an animated movie that i can think of.
if I saw a mouse wearing clothes, I'd much less inclined to kill them, but then I guess I'd be much more determined to catch them out of curiosity. so maybe it was the right choice.
>Ambush some little twink mouse in the woods and ride him to exhaustion for the sole purpose of mothering a litter of mouselets. >Get hit with sapience the moment his superior, genetically engineered mouse cum hits your womb and undergo an existential crises. >Drag him back to your hole for explanation/more enlightening semen.
Horrifying for both of them.
It means generally relaxing. Please learn what words mean.

Always remember the best version of the song is stuck on the italian dub. The version on the CD expanded re-issue is a different take, and inferior. This is what italians were subjected to:
Oof, an extended cut of the mid-movie lullaby version. Didn't know that existed. I hated that version. Irks the hell out of me when the singer drags notes out of synch with the melody. I found the male singer in the american credits to be superior.

Which is weird, since he is a good singer. Maybe nobody told him to do another take?
read this right as the credits rolled and this came up
I really loved the movie. It's very wholesome and cute. Mrs Brisby as adorable, and I wish we had more characters like her. That's a strong female lead done right imo. And the character dynamics are wholesome too. I'm sure people on this board will call it basic, but I dont care.
A little weird how they just casually ignore the magic, but, i kinda welcome it too. A touch of fantasy makes it more comfy. I also like how the dialogue feels more from a play than a book (like most movies did back then, but I suppose I never really noticed until watching this).
9/10 I would give it. Overall i see why you all love Mrs Brisby, she's a gem. And I hope her children grow up to be able to take care of her in her old age 🙂
No, actually. I know it's on the Bluray, but I put off buying it for a long time, hoping they would release a better version of the movie. In other words, a version that comes with the open matte copy. I would rather watch in something that is closer to 4:3, but not have a part of the film cut and thrown away. I want to pay for complete artwork, not something cut or compromised.
And yes, I know the 2 DVD version comes with that, but that's not ache deee.

I accept that Jonarhan's children can develop intelligence via his genes, and Brisby was slowly uplifted by Jonathan and Ages. The other animals though; Jeremy, Shrew, even the Owl, I don't see how they can develop that level of intelligence via osmosis.
The owl could have gained intelligence by eating animals with NIMH juice in them
that's some decent headcanon. if the Owl had been hunting NIHM animals since he was young, I suppose he'd get multiple small doses worth of the serum over years.
He can shapeshift to an entirely different species but he can't tank a 3lb object? C'mon, man!!
the rats are radioactively giving it to other animals
Owl was a super special perhaps magical character, who lived for a very long time (and possibly Nicodemus' friend). The rats are putting chemicals in the water
They're turning the crickets gay!!
Auntie Shrew was the Brisbys’ good friend and neighbor, so she was just as susceptible to Johnathan and Ages’s influence as Mrs B.
And Jeremy is about the level of intelligence of an irl crow. They are insanely smart birds.
And I'm not gonna like, but Auntie Shrew? ...would. I requested the world's very first adult pic of her, drawn by Suce in his drawgay days, back when fchan was a thing.
Nicodemus and Great Owl are the same person, their intelligence/wisdom is super natural
Pretty sure if Mrs Brisby went back to the owl to thank him, all she would have found were hundred-year old, cobweb-covered owl bones.
>husband dies a few days ago
>jumps on the first dick she sees
prostitute
rats only live like two years tops, a few days is a long time for them
The nimh rats actually have extended lifespans possibly human level. Mrs. Brisby was a normal wild/feral field mouse Johnathan literally fricked intelligence into. She has the short natural lifespan. Luckily her kinds inherited their father's mutated genes making them smarter and longer lived than her.

there is the savior fetish aka " I can fix them"

That is such a fricked thing to do.

Jonathan was also a mouse. There were 10 mice at Nimh with the rats.
Few days?
I always got the impression her husband had been dead for a few years.
They are practically the same though
Different species, can't interbreed. A rat will more than likely kill and eat a mouse. Hence that guard mercilessly trying to kill Mrs Frisby.
>Hence that guard mercilessly trying to kill Mrs Frisby.
That reminds me of that thread where she gets so angry that she constantly swears like a sailor.
>Frisby
You moron
Did you even read the novel the movie is based on?
Obviously not. I did that JUST to catch an idiot. I mean, the hook was RIGHT THERE.
Wow congrats. You baited someone. You are a real frickin winner at life. Bet your Cinemaphile boner got bigger.
>Different species, can't interbreed.
I never said they could. Rats are just bigger mice
Uh, no. Rats are...something different, yet in the same family. Like Badgers to weasels.

Or maybe you want to see an underdog, a recently widowed mother, no less, succeed against great odds.
>not perfect, therefore bad
kys
She's a MOUSE, dude.
The only actual shit part of NIMH is the asspull at the end with the necklace.
really seems like they could have came up with something better or explain it more. Though after all these years, I can't think of a better ending

She's literally in a life or death struggle to save her son, so unless that was a pun.....
>My favorite female character? Movie peach.
>trivializing family conflict
I'm sorry your family doesn't give a shit about you
That's why the movie is good though. Because she's an average loser, and not a tryhard marie sue.
Not a loser (sounds like you've been intaking too much manhwa), just a simple, barely-educated country girl, doing the best she can in a REALLY shitty situation.
She was just an average "person."
But was still heroic.
We need more loser heroines making it through the odds thanks to their determination. Secret of NIMH was based for that
Methinks you used a very wrong word.
>isn't strong
I completely disagree.
Mrs Brisby in the movie showed a lot of strength as a character.

Once she got that sparkly mojo going, though...by the Power of Grayskull.
Courage of the heart is rare
There's a power, when it's there.
how the frick was anything you said a reason to dislike her or the movie? those are all her selling points.
>rat and mice dont mix

They make rice
Remember when Justin made Mrs Brisby strip naked right before going on a dangerous mission?
if I saw a mouse wearing clothes, I'd much less inclined to kill them, but then I guess I'd be much more determined to catch them out of curiosity. so maybe it was the right choice.
i can mix her
Good grief she's naked
she's always naked
Why did they want electricity if they had magic, though?
They wanted to drive up the power bill of the home owners.
"If they can't afford to live here, WE get the house! Oh, and let's make phone calls to the spice "976" numbers to drive up the phone bills!"
The magic was movie only. Also you could go off the old Asimov quote about advanced enough tech may as well be magic
Next time don't eat the bait, genius.
imagine if brisby wasn a larger feral rat female instead of a mouse that corned poor little mouse johnathan in the wilds for snu snu

God I wish that was me.

I want to watch a death fight between Mrs. Brisby and Gadget.
Secret of Nihm is a dogshit movie and they only made it to show off how good they were at animating ropes
I haven't seen the movie. Judging by the thread, is it comfy?
Comfy, when there isn't action happening. When it IS, it can be quite stressful.
IF you're 6 years old. There's nothing stressful in this movie for a mentally normal teen or adult.
Anon was asking if the movie is comfy.
What does that mean? Toddler-friendly?

Did you specifically make this threat because Fred is currently working on a doujinshi of Mrs. Brisby and Justin, OP? Seems kinda sus if you ask me.
I thought I was the only one here following it...
Didn't read the thread. OP that's a good romantic image. Tender, without being schlocky. Intimate, without being pornographic.

Nope
His nudism comics are extremely hot, good stuff
Well, it's a good image.
All the animals seemed fairly intelligent not just the rats.
Rats of NIMH takes place in the same universe as Flowers for Algernon
No, but holy SHIT is that a close thing. We need more animated movies that COULD have taken place in the world of live-action movies...but without cheesily mentioning them.
Rock N Rule is the sequel to Secret of NIMH that takes place years after an atomic war killed all the humans.

can rats and mice hybridize? It seems like they should be able to.
No, they're more different than you think. Same goes for rabbits and hares not being able to crossbreed.

Where?
Literally every scene with Nicodemus in it. Including the opening of the film. Are you sure you've even watched the movie at all?
that's not magic, that's telekinesis
1. What's the practical difference?
2. If telekinesis is magic, then magic is telekinesis. So it's magic, no matter how you call it.
Cope.
Lol at how small and cute she is!
LOOK!
I'm looking.
>Women like Mrs. Brisby no longer exist

shut up man. It's a wholesome movie, too wholesome for any of that.
>brings up the culture war BS out of nowhere

Your need to feel persecuted is pathetic anon, get a hobby.
The movie was pretty much a completed comic in the storyboard form. Don overdid it, and it's beautiful. The credits show some of the storyboards.
