I want to remind everyone that the film has a certain numerology to it, which is a valid way to understand the film. It's not entirely schizo, but this view can be enjoyed on its own schizo merits as well.

Basically, the numbers ranging from 11 through 15 are important throughout the film. This all starts with the opening scene, in which about 11-12 opening shots gradually give way to the action. As Ed Tom describes a man being sentenced to death, he says that the convict knew he would go to hell "in about 15 minutes". This sets up the numerical range.

One of the themes of the film is how past violence begets more violence. The site of the drug deal that Llewelyn finds initially is reproduced almost exactly: almost a dozen dead guys (if not more) later on, like 4-5 trashed vehicles, and a dead dog (Llewelyn later shoots a dog dead). This "doubling" of the death in the film is also found in the facade of a motel, the exterior shot of which is shown here. Note how the tall vertical windows look like tombstones, and there's two rows: 13x2.

I will continue schizo posting along these lines if anyone likes.

The major thing throughout the plot is that the physical damage of the initial drug deal is reproduced almost exactly throughout the film, as I said. Llewelyn finds a crime scene with like 10/11 dead guys, a dying baja blast guy, another moustachioed guy in a fancy cowboy outfit in shade who got a bit away before dying, a dead dog, and five trashed vehicles. The dead bodies correspond roughly to Anton's body count, the dead dog corresponds to the later one that Llewelyn shoots a bit later on, and the five trashed vehicles are reproduced throughout the film: the car that Anton sets on fire, the car that Llewelyn crashes at night, the car that Anton crashes in, and the other 1-2 that I missed (Llewelyn's truck with its slashed tires?) This is just basic repeating metaphor of how violence begets violence, which the old uncle guy reminds Ed Tom about at the end. This is nothing new, humans have always been violent horrible animals.

The number 13. It's unlucky, corresponds to "L", and is used by latin gangs for that reason. The number 13 is "Death" in the tarot deck. Everyone is coded for death. 13 = LE = EL, forwards or backwards, however you like. Look at the names. ed tom bELL. LLEwellyn Moss. deputy wendELL. EL paso, tx, dEL rio, tx, terrELL county, tx, uncle ELLis, "old aunt "ELLa", etc. What is "ELL"? It might be "113", backwards. Llewelyn's body is found in motel units 112 and 114. Both units are roped off as a crime scene. The plot stuff about inner vents, Anton somehow "escaping", pipes etc shows an in-between space, between the two numbers and the two motel units. 113.

Once you are aware of the number range 11-15, you have most of your arsenal, if you are willing to accept my little theory. There are other doublings and reversals, but these are more minor.

In the famous coin scene, Anton flips a 1958 quarter. In the scene, the year is 1980, so the coin has been traveling for 22 years. The very dark and very briefly seen gravestone of the mother-in-law, Agnes Kracik, has the dates "1922-1980", a clear reversal of the above. I don't know that it really means anything, but I believe that this connection was intentional on the Coens' part, just playing with numbers in the set design.

When Llewelyn finds the dead guy and the satchel, there are TWO very dry, brushy trees in a long shot. The one dead guy is sitting dead under one of them. Llewelyn might as well sit down dead under the other tree at this point. The fact that it's TWO million dollars is also vaguely suggestive of "doubling".

Don't put it in your (you)s these are your lucky digits. If you put it in there it will just get mixed in with the others and become another post number.

When Carson Wells goes to the office building to accept the job, he goes up several floors. It's not crazy high, but it's several floors up. At the end of the scene, Carson mentions that there seems to be a missing floor in the building. The businessman knows that it's hidden, and dismisses his remark. The obvious inference is that it's the 13th floor. The number 13 (again, death) is sometimes suppressed from skyscraper floor counts, because of superstition.

I don't insist on every single point I've suggested, but the Coens very definitely coded some numerological shit into the film, as a way to amuse themselves, along the lines of what I've suggested. When I was younger I thought I was smart for seeing this stuff, but as I've gotten older I see that this sort of structural thing is just stuff that authors/adapters will bake in as part of what they do, if they care at all about story structure, or imposing some "reddit" structure, so to speak.
