Can?

Can Cinemaphile explain me why the current design of Strawberry Shortcake, as well as the other girls, doesn't work in terms of appealing to the current target audience of the IP as well to the general public? I think its because of the render they generally use to represent her, which i can comprehend, its not too good. And in comparision of how she looks in the series is actually quite decent and pleasant to see.
But things besides, my idea here is that the actual design doesn't give the whole vibes of strawberry-looking fruity girl. I still like it i mean, but i do wonder how it can work while keeping some traits of its look and its general vibes of being a country girl.

Gen Alpha doesn't watch tv. They are the grown up Ipad babies. 2009 one barley even hit the mark with zoomers.

It looks like a fan insert visitor character rather than Strawberry Shortcake. Like she's one of us who visits or channels Strawberry Shortcake and then goes back to her le (almost) normal life.

80s was when there was nostalgia for toys from the 60s, where there was a big bonnet character named Hobby something.
91 was trying to Shirley Temple us
03 nails styles of the time, 06 the hat should of been reworked.
09 feels like trying to do call backs to the original but modern.
Today's fails because it doesn't fit what kids like. Even if it was on streaming/ipads, she'd appeal to maybe 5yr olds at best. She looks like a preschool show character about to talk about the food groups.

There are like 30 "evolution of Strawberry Shortcake" images on Google, but I don't think any of them are really complete.

    >the actual design doesn't give the whole vibes of strawberry-looking fruity girl
Maybe they're intentionally trying to move past that.
I don't know if that's a good move. Are they trying to make her less fantasy-inspired? Less magical?
Seems that way, and I don't think that works. Then again, it may work better than we think. We're adult men, not little girls.
Maybe they're trying to appeal to a broader age range, and they found out that girls react well from 4 to 12 to the new design, while the more fantasy-fruity designs appeal harder to little girls but on a narrower range of age?

Something like that? We would need to see the data.

As for me, I would insist to make the next gen very, very fantasy-inspired and fruity. Maybe the girls should have powers, even. Make it a maho shoujo, but with focus on SoL.
That's what I would do, because that's what I wanna see. I'm guessing you'd like that too, but what if market research shows that it's not what little girls wanna see?

The point of the thing is to move plastic toys, after all.

It's so weird how the 2003 design slowly morphs into the 2009 design.
also, the 2009 design is...so mediocre to me. It's not terrible but it just feels...lacking a warmth that the 03 design has. I like the green eyes and the hat and that's it.

It just clicked for me. The 2003 design has a VERY different art style. The colors aren't as obnoxiously saturated. There's actual shading. Her clothes look soft and behave like fabric, folding and draping instead of every line being so stiff and straight.

Ok, I like your idea, could work.
But, do you have any ideas of how you could make a better design of the actual gen to be very fruity and have strawberry vibes, while keeping some traits of its current design because it still looks good to me?

I'm not against modern designs, the 2009 one is pretty cute! I do think the current ones are lacking a lot but I think it's because in the current age, she's just an IP that makes money.
She looks less like a "Your sweet friend strawberry who wants to play outside and enjoy sweet treats" and more like a... Tween doll that hangs in malls and comes with a walk in closet.

The original designs were popular because they resembled rag dolls that little girls would have, and when they started making dolls they started with rag dolls. The original aesthetic was similar enough to something already existing that they were able to associate with it to become popular. Moving away from that concept made them less popular. DiC (and others later on) thought they could just reboot an established IP and make money, but in doing so they removed the core appeal of the franchise. It's like if you made a Transformers show where none of the designs were transforming robots.
