The issue is that the vast majority of atheists are midwits who will become comtemptuous at the first sign of religious imagery, and think that they are the height of intellectualism because they know that literally believing the world is 6000 years old and Noah's Ark and the like is silly. The best kind of atheists will actually weigh up and consider the philosophical ideas that come from religion, not just pooh-pooh everything that doesn't come from a Richard Dawkins book.
I don't think it should be banned. I think that it shouldn't be taught to children. I don't see why parents can't live by example and then once their children are mature enough, explain their religion to them and let them make the choice.

There are atheists who appreciate/adore this film and Bresson in general. Those with less intellectual capacity who do not fully appreciate the consequences behind their thinking will not appreciate these sorts of films by any means, but let's not pretend the average Christian would understand or appreciate it either. There might be a greater understanding of it among Christians than atheists but the majority will not even sit through films like Bresson's.
