Can we really talk about Saturday morning cartoons anymore with TV cable disappearing with each year and streaming taking over?
Can we really talk about Saturday morning cartoons anymore with TV cable disappearing with each year and streaming taking over?
Sure. I don't talk about cartoons unless it's out of nostalgia. I haven't watched a second of television in over 20 years.
Born in the early to mid 80s, I presume? How's the wife and kids anon?
>wife and kids
I post on Cinemaphile. If I had a wife and kids they would have left me years ago out of embarrassment.
I post here with my wife all the time
Well, I assume they would have left me regardless because of my terrible personality and unsightly appearance.
Body pillows don't count anon.
Cinemaphile hasn't been le sekrit club for YEARS anon.
Nothing weird about being here anymore.
Cartoons still premiere on Saturday mornings so yeah
Why so much distinction for Saturday morning cartoons? Asking honestly as a 90s kid who grew up with dedicated cartoon channels like Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon.
At least for us who grew up without cable as kids, we only had Saturday mornings as our main weekly cartoon watching. Occasionally got to rent some dvd episodes whenever my parents went to the video store.
The best times were when they started playing cartoons after school on independent stations/Fox.
Oh I'm aware of that. My question is more about, why is often considered a separate category of cartoons altogether? Just seems weird to me that people are nostalgic for waking up early on a weekend when years later they could be watched any day of the week at later times of the day, sometimes even the same ones.
Is it one of those things where people are more nostalgic for the "ritual" aspect than the content itself, like Blockbuster?
If you were off school during the week good fricking luck trying to find something to watch besides game shows.
Saturday was when they set aside hours of time to show stuff just for kids.
Depending where you lived, you had a morning block and an afternoon block that started around 1 or 2 until 5 on different channels. Some channels had the Disney afternoon and some would have all the action cartoons. Sunday also had cartoons in the morning early until twelve.
sometimes certain blocks get preempted by sports but it was a minor inconvenience
it's when NBC dropped cartoons from the Saturday blocked 3 decades that the end began.
Sad.
Don't forget the FCC enforcing their E/I guideline mandate more strictly in the mid 90s which in turned cause the Saturday morning blocks to decline
Lel
it is pretty weird
i stayed at my family home and my sisters where watching netflix at like 7am as kids do
it was so bizarre that my mothers tv wasn't even wired up it was just relying on wifi and there wasnt any cable/antenna
What do kids even watch these days?
TikTok/Twitch/YouTube on their phones.
I can't stand the sound of the television, I don't know why anyone wants it on except for video games and other useful things
I do miss the, "TV experience". Like it would be nice to just tune into something and not have to think about it and have decent variety mixed in and discover new shows that way or just to have some background noise that isn't too samy. I almost ruined Siendfeld by binging it. I love Seinfeld but it's not good for binging. I start to recognize patterns and stuff instead of just enjoying a funny show. Sometimes I don't want to think and I just want something playing in the background. You know? Decision fatigue is a real thing. I wish streaming services had a "tv mode". And it would be scheduled just like a tv channel would. bonus points cause there would be no commercials. Actually, if streaming services wanted to get advertisers in that is how you could do it. Pretend it's part of the experience and since it's a new thing you have to opt into anyways people wouldn't unsubscribe.
Buy an nVidia Shield, download Kodi, install PseudoTV, make all the commercial-free channels you want.
Not that guy but I could never do this shit just because the ability to go back to just watching exactly what I want is always there. It's like when you make a randomized music playlist but then get the itch to hear a particular song and just skip through the list which defeats the purpose.
Huh.
Bingewatching is cancer. It doesn't give you any time to ruminate and appreciate what you're watching, you just cram it and move on to the next show.
