Carl's actor sucked and I didn't believe him as his son he was that bad. Lori was a big part about making Rick feel like a real character who had something to fight for, yeah I know he had the baby but they baby can't talk. After she died they should've had the end in sight.
It's his appearance from the comics. His appearance gets worse when the character is meant to be 12 but the actor is 15 and looks looks older so they make him grow his hair out to his shoulders to make him look younger, and they still make him wear the hat.

Well once they saw how dumb this particular kid looks in that hat they should have fired him and found a better Coral.
They were thinking about respecting the source material. Which is more than can be said for 99% of adaptations.
