The issue is that ALL adult cartoons are made ugly on purpose, because of the corporate lie that pleasing aesthetics will distract from the writing/make it feel like kids show.
nobody said they can't, it's the fact that literally every single adult cartoon is made with the express intent of being hideous on purpose, likely stemming from the stigma that animation is still for children which means everything NOT for children has to have the same shitty aesthetic and be animated in fricking toonboom or something
Man even 90% of anime these days hardly resembles Satoshi Kon's work. They may be more aesthetically pleasing than western "adult" animation, but no less generic
You can still have a cartoon that's aesthetically ugly while also being appealing. Most 90s/2000s cartoons hinged on that very notion.
The problem is that most adult cartoons are not that at all, they're sterile in a simplistic, corporate way and it's gross to watch. Not every cartoon has to be fricking Family Guy adjacent.
That's not exactly contradictory to each other. If anything, that's the logical conclusion. If you can make anything in animation you can make extremely ugly weird designs
While true, there's primarily the fact that the female lead in this show is obviously based off of her voice actor. To me this is just extremely lazy but I didn't really elaborate on that beforehand.
I just feel you may as well go live action at that point.
>you aren't constrained by reality in animation.
In Anime they always respect shit like volume and perspective even in odd stuff like Shinchan while cartoons are all flat and geometric.
Sooo let me guess: the end of the series will either have them all die rather than focusing on building a evac shuttle to save some amount of humanity...or the planet is gonna reveal to be full of aliens that end up just wanting to be near earth.
This style worked really well in humanimals because it was a creepy cronenberg horror comedy thing, but here it gets in the way.
As for the topic itself there's a lot of room for very poignant observations about how humans react to stress or impending doom, how we may be hurtling towards an extinction from climate or resistant disease as we speak, but I'm not sure an animated dramedy is the right place to say them (or that this will say anything of any real meaning at all).
In particular I think the choice to center it around a single person is a massive mistake. The best works that explore the psychology of the apocalypse drift around entire towns giving us glimpses at different people reacting differently to the situation.
I guess we'll see but so far it seems to have a lot working against it.
>How so?
the covid-19 pandemic was bad but no where near an existential threat to humanity and shows that even a half assed global response can manage a pretty deadly disease outbreak. its ramifications are ultimately economic, which is not in the same ballpark when we're talking about literal, actual human extinction like with climate change, which if it goes out of control (which it looks like its doing, we've been getting regular 2c temperature spikes throughout november) has the ability to actually wipe out all human life in a number of years.
I enjoy apocalypse kino. I absolutely fricking hate those character designs and personalities. They actually inspire some kind of primal killing instinct.
So… like, have all the traditional artists in the western world just been killed off and replaced with graphic designers?
Why are people so contempt with every adult animated show having humans with square heads and rigid digitally assisted animation to look like Rick and Morty?
This shit is “brave and ambitious” in such a superfluous way. Wow you made a brooding emotional story where the main character is a middle aged woman and everything is SO SEWIOUS… but also the show looks, moves and feels exactly like every other adult comedy slop cartoon where there’s sex and fart jokes every 10 seconds.
Just goes to show that people are bullshitting when they say they care for the animation medium. They never talk about the actual artistry of how visual information is presented or how something moves on screen.
In reality it’s all about the writing. This show has identical animation to every bad adult cartoon but the writing is different so therefore morons are fooled into thinking this something more special than it really is. Like it’s “fighting the system”.
If you want to push the idea that animation can be adult, please put more effort into the actual ANIMATION. Learn how to draw real fricking people and not this flat geometric bauhous shit.
The reason why things are this way and animation is the west has stagnated is because it takes effort to be good at something but it takes no effort to be quirky.
>So… like, have all the traditional artists in the western world just been killed off and replaced with graphic designers?
Sort of, yeah. Art Schools have had trouble finding teachers for things like classical figure drawing for decades at this point - basic foundational illustration techniques are legitimately being lost to history as I type this. The masters lacked apprentices. >Why are people so content with every adult animated show having humans with square heads and rigid digitally assisted animation to look like Rick and Morty?
This mostly just comes down to cost. Television and movies in general have been struggling with decreased revenue ever since internet streaming became widely available and have been crunching the budgets ever since. Animation was always expensive with slim margins even when advertising was big money, with the precipitous drop in ad revenue you just can't afford to have anything but the simplest and cheapest assembly line possible. The list of positions in an animation pipeline has shrunk considerably and will continue to shrink - anyone in animation or illustration right now with any sense is scrambling for a teaching job.
Basically a studio will build a single style and then adapt it to all their other projects because "hey, we're already trained on this other style and have all these assets, why not just use them?"
>In reality it’s all about the writing.
This has been a problem for a long time and it's one of those weird hollywood exec superstitions. You can't have interesting animation in anything targeted at adults because "it distracts from the writing."
Pretentious frickwit, do you have any idea how much it would cost to make something that looks even remotely like tokyo godfathers compared to the OP?
Animation is NOT an easy sell, making it as cheaply as possible is the only way forward, and it's been this way for longer than you've even been fricking alive.
>So… like, have all the traditional artists in the western world just been killed off and replaced with graphic designers?
unironically yes
graphic designers are faster, cheaper, and more easily programmable than a free-thinking artist with their own style. they produce content in a more timely manner and studios think that means they're better hires.
it's stupid to expect western animators to produce work as good as Japan, but you gotta admit 95% of anime is dogshit especially if you're using Satoshi Kon as a comparison. his work is closer to 20+ years old than not.
Yes, but that's because most of that budget is spent on safety nets around the building to keep the overworked animators from killing themselves.
Id love more shows that look like this. Shows that look like this are very expensive and time consuming to make. Animation is not a respected medium in america like it is in Japan or France. It is hard to get production companies to invest in projects that they don't think they'll get a return on investment. If you want more variety in the animation either fund it or make it because the industry sucks for everyone.
>no mix media animation or realstic backgrounds with high quality lighting which makes up Gumball's visuals
homie what "Gumball vibes" are you talking about?
Everyones taking it pretty well for the end off the world, why do hollywood elites think everyone is level headed during a crisis? everyone would be freaking the frick around and trust me some people would be doing some pretty evil things at the end of the world.
So it's like that episode of rick and morty where entire alien planets on the verge of destruction just have world-wide orgies and chaotic fun? Will the twist be the same? that the end of the world is prevented and they still needed to go to work tomorrow feeling awkward about all the shit they did when they thought there'd be no accountability after the meteorite impact?
"If you're not living on the edge and doing everything you ever wanted every single second of every single day you're wasting your life, and a near death experience or impending doom on a global scale will show you" is a very common modern narrative. In real life there would be a lot of different reactions to the world ending tomorrow, from cult-like mass hysteria to actual nation-wide orgies to people that just gather their loved ones and spend the last moments in peace.
I think both of these outlooks are incredibly shallow and naive.
People aren't truly rational creatures. We're able to reason and plan and delay gratification, yes, but we're still irrational social creatures. We're hard-wired to behave in ways that promote herd survival because that's what led our ancestors to survive in the first place. The idea that normal inhibited people would become crossed-style depraved maniacs from the threat of imminent death is quite silly. Hawaii had a nuke false alarm go out to the whole state in 2018 and there wasn't a single orgy or murder spree.
>Hawaii had a nuke false alarm go out to the whole state in 2018 and there wasn't a single orgy or murder spree.
you didn't hear about the incest siblings?
I feel like an optimistic take on human nature at the end of the world isn't that bad a thing.
Girl's Last Tour is one of my favorite post-apocalyptic series just because the characters are fully aware that everything is over and simply help each other accomplish whatever small goals they still have before humanity fades away.
Sure it isn't realistic since people turn every crisis into a giant moron fight but it is a nice thought.
Holy shit I just found the art director's gallery and this is fricking tragic.
Their work is downright gorgeous. How do we keep allowing executive producers to frick over artists like this? The actual show itself looks absolutely putrid.
What's the point of hiring good talent when you're just going to revise all their shit to look worse?
The style on the bottom would have been a much better fit for the series.

It's leagues above Carol & The End of The World.
It just shows it's not that hard for artists to make something appealing but TV execs don't want that for some weird reason.
>expressionless bus/subway drawings everyone does >3 images of the same thing but with different colors >gorgeous
huh
show me some of their actual best stuff anon
>10 million megatons
Um, that's less than 1/7th of the meteor that ended the dinosaurs, no way a fricking planet collision of that size is so minuscule
you can smell the ending of this story a million miles away
the meteor is going to either miss the planet or someone is going to Armageddon (1998) it out of the sky the last minute and the overarching moral of the story will be >hurr durr treat every day like it's your last durr *wholesome applause*
>10 million megatons
Um, that's less than 1/7th of the meteor that ended the dinosaurs, no way a fricking planet collision of that size is so minuscule
I think you're just projecting
This story seems to at least partially take inspiration from things like on the beach so it should actually end with everyone dead
it's a cartoon for adults. those kind of showrunners love preaching to their audience.
but it would be funny if everyone in this hideous production fricking died horrifically. i just hope they actually animate it.
Those are some ugly character designs, god damn
I don't understand you gays, why can't cartoons be ugly?
The issue is that ALL adult cartoons are made ugly on purpose, because of the corporate lie that pleasing aesthetics will distract from the writing/make it feel like kids show.

Man even 90% of anime these days hardly resembles Satoshi Kon's work. They may be more aesthetically pleasing than western "adult" animation, but no less generic
what's wrong with me wanting to look at beautiful art? why does everything have to be hideous contemporary zeitgeist bullshit?
It's just plain unappealing.
You can still have a cartoon that's aesthetically ugly while also being appealing. Most 90s/2000s cartoons hinged on that very notion.
The problem is that most adult cartoons are not that at all, they're sterile in a simplistic, corporate way and it's gross to watch. Not every cartoon has to be fricking Family Guy adjacent.
i expect it to be mid but it's got an interesting concept
Why can't we ever have anything beautiful
>Can practically go with any character design since you aren't constrained by reality in animation.
>These are your character designs
That's not exactly contradictory to each other. If anything, that's the logical conclusion. If you can make anything in animation you can make extremely ugly weird designs
While true, there's primarily the fact that the female lead in this show is obviously based off of her voice actor. To me this is just extremely lazy but I didn't really elaborate on that beforehand.

So Don't look up as a cartoon.
I don't think it will be quite that preachy but who knows.
Her eyes remind me of Problem Solverz for some reason
I like the concept and writing, and the soundtrack. I can tell it wants to be meaningful and is sincere.
But...frick man, it's hard to look past the character designs, especially for Carol. Her VA is also...not the best, at least worse than the other VAs.
This dude has two fricking mouths.
that's a double chin
Why do Americans go out of their way to make the ugliest designs possible? I genuinely don't get it
Does this take place in the same setting as Bridge Kids?
Sooo let me guess: the end of the series will either have them all die rather than focusing on building a evac shuttle to save some amount of humanity...or the planet is gonna reveal to be full of aliens that end up just wanting to be near earth.
PLACE YOUR BETS
>building an evac shuttle
lmao homie what
evac to where
Mars at best
It's incredibly sad to me that I need to ask if you're serious
No i know damn well that they're not gonna pull such a move

I heavily disagree with that movie message.
which you believe to be...?
Fallout stayed deadly for years.
Not understanding how radiations works.
congrats on whatever the frick you were trying to do with this post
>how we may be hurtling towards an extinction from climate or resistant disease as we speak
climate only, resistant disease is a meme
>resistant disease is a meme
How so?
>How so?

Anti-biotic resistant disease is a real problem that has nothing to do with Covid-19
>resistant disease is a meme
The climate is getting warmer
Soon we'll be dealing with the real diseases like in ye olden days
So natural selection is back and I'm not seeing the problem.
concept is great and I like the unique art style. The writing will either make or break it for me.
I enjoy apocalypse kino. I absolutely fricking hate those character designs and personalities. They actually inspire some kind of primal killing instinct.

Actually most anime production today is done long distance with many people around the world working from home.
Interesting. Good to know.
>people around the world
It's all malaysians and philippinoes ( and the occasional vietnamese)
>Waaaa, muh budgets
Frick you bootlicker. You're part of the reason why everything is so shit now, and people are flocking to indies
Oh yeah that's why we moved to cgi which is actually more expensive to animate with, makes sense
I like me some good abstract graphic designs (more then muh realism tbh)
I mostly agree with you besides your homosexual comparison between a movie and a tv show being fricking dense
>So… like, have all the traditional artists in the western world just been killed off and replaced with graphic designers?

I'm getting more of a Gumball vibe form it.
Reminds me more of Manimorphs:
I assume it's by Princess Bento
>no mix media animation or realstic backgrounds with high quality lighting which makes up Gumball's visuals
homie what "Gumball vibes" are you talking about?

Apparently the single trailer pissed Aaron Long ( Sublo and Tangy Mustard) why this guy always has shit opinions?
My only actual issue with these designs is that the eyes touch. I fricking hate it.
Cyclops
Unironically looks good in motion.
It looks even worse in motion
Why should I watch this fugly shit when I can watch a live action movie with identical plot?
Well Cinemaphile, what will you be doing?
the MC's VA sounds like she's got both Xanax and sinus issues. seriously? LOL

No, it's gonna be more closer to Don't Look Up
i don't know what that is.
Why do these morons choose to have the ugliest possible cartoons ever?
What is their motivation?
