yeah, it's a ridiculous story but it's fun and they fully explain how the world become robotic hell via ingame info dumps and books you find. Backstory is actually pretty plausible, sadly. Well at least until the robots all became dinosaurs, that bit was a stretch.

Second game is way worse setting and WAAAAY worse story but the lore is still neat and the combat is leagues better.

I found the combat to be fun, especially in the second game. Coming up with your own strategies to take down the boss robots is real satisfying, especially when it's a machine that kicked your ass earlier in the game.
is there a lot of enemy types? all i ever hear about this game is how they made the main character ugly in the sequel but nobody actually talks about the game itself

Theres a good variety, even more so in the sequel but they do bring most of them back from zero dawn. The human enemies are kinda shit in the first one because they don't level scale. If you bother to get stronger you'll shit all over them after the first couple story missions. They fix that in the second one though.
I'd definitely recommend playing it on a hard difficulty if you've played the other 3rd-person action games of the last generation. It's not going to be "le dark souls" but it'll provide a fun challenge.
