I agree with you OP. "Cool" characters are always this weird projection of what the writer wishes they were and thus they resent them. 90% of the time this is utterly lost on the audience.
The Cool Kids and Enid are fine. Frida sucks and I haven't read Homestuck.

The fact that you got that they were supposed to be cool means the animators fricking nailed it.
To be fair, the cool kids on the left were just supposed to be normal ass teenagers and Lars was an insecure asshat who built them up as ultra chads who'd reject him at the first sign of weakness.
Frida is like the opposite of Cleo in the original in that she's an ultrawoke parody...but I have no idea how genuine they are in the idea that she's not supposed to be idolized or thought of as an actual cool person.

OP, ask yourself, who is labeling these characters as cool? Is it really the writers directly, or is it characters within the work, done to show what that character thinks of as "cool"?
