The Mac Tonight thing was like 2007 and it was cases of them specifically removing the moonman merch, as opposed to the rest which was a general line wide rebranding.
2007 was also the same time McDonald's scrapped all their mascots from most merchandising and locations due to the fallout from Supersize Me
In the mid 90s there was a McDonalds in my local mall that was just beautiful, pristine, with old timey decor and big statues of some McDonald characters.

Ever since Super Size Me came out McDonalds has been bit by bit moving away from Kids oriented marketing as to avoid concerned parents groups and since they have now successfully hooked two generations of people into going here consistently anyways they have just gone full rebrand.
