They oughtta make a miniseries about the reigns of Phokas, John Tzimiskes, and Basil II. Or a biopic about Heraclius but make it an alt history where he defeats the Muslims

      Anonymous

I think Phokas-Heraclius would actually be the only really suitable period to set a byzantium series.
The only really other suitable event for a series to focus on imo would be the first crusade, with Komneno Byzantium being a side attraction. Or maybe the Fourth Crusade.
A movie could maybe be made on one of the seiges of constantinople, though the concept of 'christians bravely resisting muslim conquerors' is not a popular standing point in todays media.

        Wtf was this guy's problem?

And Heraclius' reign would be one of the most adventurous to cover, but it's got such a bummer ending (although typical for Byzantine history) I think a miniseries about the Komemnos as a whole could work. Could make some comedic sideadventures with some Varangian guard people kinda like Vorenus and Pullo.

          >Theodore I Laskaris
He had a fight with a Rum Sultan, Kaykhusraw.
          >As the sources narrate, at this moment of victory, the Seljuk sultan sought out Laskaris, who was hard pressed by the attacking Turkish troops. Kaykhusraw charged his enemy and gave him a heavy blow on the head with a mace, so that the Nicaean emperor, dizzied, fell from his horse. Kaykhusraw was already giving orders to his retinue to carry Laskaris away, when the latter regained his composure and brought Kaykhusraw down by hacking at his mount's rear legs. The sultan too fell on the ground and was beheaded. His head was impaled on a lance and hoisted aloft for his army to see, causing the Turks to panic and retreat.

The first two were already invented in hellenistic times.
And the Reinassance started because byzantine scholars escaped their collapsing empire too busy in fynastic infighting to stop the trillions roaches landing on the Dardanelles (of which the first was litterally invited by a byzo prince to use as an ally for a byzantine civil war, KWAB). Too Orthodox for the even the Soviet Union to make kinos about back in the day. Now that Russia cinema is irrelevant there's no one left in that cultural sphere that cares about the Byzantines to make these movies.

Outside of the "East" in the medieval sense, the cultural sphere of the Byzantine Empire, the Byzantine Empire is itself irrelevant.
So the only people that would have made a lavish historical epic about them were the Soviets and they had their own ideological reasons to not do that.
This isn't a complicated dynamic and my post wasn't hard to understand.

It's totally culturally irrelevant though. You go ahead and try to make a film about how trade flowed through the Mediterranean and Silk Road to the west because the ERE's rump still existed. It's relevant to history, it's not culturally relevant or a touchstone you can make into a film for the masses.

There is a thing in the comic that is missing in the animated movie.

In the comic, Corto tells to the reader that he once all that shit and long adventure ended, years later, went to visit the tomb of Von Urgern–Sternberg, because people told him that even in death, Urgern–Sternberg would answer if called by name on his tomb.

Corto laconically says that he went there on a beautiful day of Autumn, when the woods are of red and gold. He called, but the Baron did not answer.

It shows the city as alive and well, while historical sources tell us that the city was inhabited by a handful of people living in the core of the city while everything else was abandoned by the time Turks attacked.

Basically after the Latins conquered the city it never fully recovered and people just left it in waves in the following centuries, with most elites and intellectuals having left for good decades before the actual fall.

Forgets that Byzantines refuted Platonism and then also anathematized it and revolutionized philosophy in some many ways but in the literature of the Church Fathers. Eg. Gregory of Nyssa developed the first coherent metaphysics of the infinite and also an entire coherent sermon that argued for the abolition of slavery as an institution.

      >>lose to Persians
Persia fell to the Caliphate, Rome stabilized Anatolia.
      >>lose to Arabs
Leo III the Isaurian and Nikephoros II Phokas send their regards.
      >>lose to Bulgars and Slavshits
So much that often became vassals.
      civil wars and murdered Emperors
      True lol
      >>lose to Turks
In the end yes, but the Komnenian Restoration happened.
      >>try to fuck over the Franks and Venetians at every turn then lose to them too
You are being very kind with Franks and Venetians.
      >>lose to the Turks again
4th Crusade crippled them permanently unfortunately.

If Byzantium had contained their sectarian autism and actually helped the Crusades the world would be a very different place. The were constantly on the back foot against Islamic states for centuries, a few thousand knights from the West turned that around and bought them more time. Time they ended up squandering.

Are you fucking retarded? The crusaders, at least during the first crusade, were scumbags who couldn't keep to their promises and refused to give up former lands to the empire. Continuing to the reign of John II, they still kept up in their disobedience, not matching up to his enthusiasm during his campaigns and outright refusing to assist him during sieges. Byzantium gave aid to the Crusaders via supplies and suzerainty, which helped to ward off encroachment from Islamic powers, at least up until the death of Manuel I.
          >The were constantly on the back foot against Islamic states for centuries
Not entirely true. Stretching back to Constantine V, that "constant backfoot" was usually more of a back and forth under strong emperors, it was only until John Kourkouas that a roughly 100 year period of dominance in Byzantium's favour was established.

It's pretty much reddit meets netflix meets globohomo feminism. Basically it's feminism the empire made to hypnotise the historian into thinking "white men bad" and "POC women good". There isn't really much more to this dreary empire than that.
